Ok I need some help. My dd 6 has the most thick tight curly hair ever. I have tried everything poosible that I can think of. All advice I have gotten tried and I think it works for maybe two days and then it is back to the mess. She cries when I comb it because it hurts so much :guilty: I feel so bad. I am going to be honest I really dont know what to do with that kind of hair. I have thick hair but it is straight (which is another topic of it being to flat) my other dd has curly hair but not has thick or tight so i have no problem with her.

For you disers with this kind of hair please tell me your secret. :listen:

 this is what her hair looks like when down. honest it all clumps together

Aww. poor baby. I feel for her. Do you condition it every time you wash it? Maybe you will just have to keep it short and therefor easier to manage. I have long curly hair, but it is not too tight. I have to condition it all the time and it does get knotty. I really notice the knottiness when I leave it curly. When I used to blow drow it all straight it was a breeze to brush. Curls just tend to wind around each other and knot.

My DD also has thick curly hair. I can try and give some advice. NEVER comb her hair when it is dry. Only comb it when wet. Use leave-in conditioner. My DD uses Olive oil shampoo and conditioner by Regis. She also uses a little bit of gel.

As the proud owner of a full head of natural curls myself, I'm going to recommend the book Curly Girl by Lorraine Massey to you:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/07...=pd_bbs_1/103-9724415-7391847?ie=UTF8&s=books

This book will give you lots of helpful advice, but I'll get you started with this - don't try to comb or brush it! Curly hair needs lots of conditioning, and then to be left alone. When you wash your DD's hair, work lots and lots of conditioner through it with your fingers to take care of any tangles, rinse it well, then leave it to air dry by itself. When you force a comb or brush through her hair, you're destroying it's natural curl pattern and encouraging frizziness.

It's possible that when you read Curly Girl, you'll decide to stop using shampoo on her hair, but I'll let you read the book for yourself to get into that question.

My sister has lots of very thick, tightly curled hair. She keeps it long, one length. (layers or short would just make it appear to be even more hair and frizzy) She uses a good leave-in conditioner after washing. It should only be combed when wet and then allowed to air dry. Since she is young, you could also french braid each side when it is wet and that could keep it looking good and not needing combing.

I think the key is lots of good conditioner.

Are you using a wide tooth comb? Don't use a brush it just makes it worse. If you have to comb it when its not out of the shower, use a spray bottle to dampen it and it can be reshaped that way.

When you wash her hair, use a separate thick conditioner and leave it in for a couple mins and comb her hair with the conditioner in. After she is out of the bath comb it again while its still soaked and then use a little spray gel or something to keep it shaped. I have had this hair all my life and I remember hurting so bad when my mama would comb it out and pratically use a bottle of spray detangler a week. Poor baby its not fun

My hair is like that naturally, but I straighten it most of the time. Anyway, definitely use conditioner (leave-in conditioner is great) and stay away from gels. Use a cream if possible. Bed Head After Party is a good one, but it's pricey. Garnier Fructis makes a good leave-in conditioning cream that I use myself. As a pp said, ONLY brush her hair when it's wet. In fact, don't brush it at all. Use a wide-toothed comb or a pic. When her hair is dry, separate the curls with your fingers, but don't touch it with a brush. ;) Good luck!

I'd say - work with it and not against it. ;)

As said above, keeping it short might help, and using good quality hair products will too, not the products out there for kids which leave the hair like straw (I use Body Shop products and let my DD8, whose hair is straight but gets snarly, use my conditioner too).

My hair is curly and I never use a brush or comb on it. I lightly pat dry with a towel, then style with my fingers using a little mousse made specifically for curls, then a diffuser to blow dry and I'm good to go.

Good luck! :wizard:

Actually, my DD and I have found the opposite with our hair. When it's all one length and long, we end up looking like Gilda Radner -- you know, Rosanne Roseanna Danna? DD just got her hair cut short (to the chin), and the stylist gave her long layers, so her hair lays nice and curly against her head. In fact, the curls now spiral. :goodvibes I just got mine cut as well... it's still below my shoulders, but my stylist didn't give me any layers and it's way too fluffy. I need to get more layers in it to get it to lie flatter and more smooth.

Along with all the conditioner advice the OP has been getting, I'd also go with Frizz Ease or Zero Frizz (a less expensive, but just as good, if not better alternative). 2-3 pumps of that stuff is a miracle for curly, frizzy hair. :thumbsup2

I have a client of mine who has wire for hair. It is awful. We spent years trying every product we could find. Even tried to straighten it. The last thing we tried was a perm. I used big big rods, I guess 2 inches wide maybe three, and perm it. It will re shape the curl. It will pull it out and make it easier to contol. It took us years to figure it out and now her hair a beauty. All she does is uses Making wave by Graham Webb and picks it out easy when wet and lets it air dry. Anyway this worked for her and thought I would share. Good luck.

Thanks I actually stop using a wide tooth comb on her hair and just a brush from other advice I have gotten.( they said that is was breaking her hair) I buy her pantene pro -v for women of color ( that is what the bottle says) for shampoo and conditner, also sometimes she use paul mitchelle conditioner. I know part of the problem is that she takes a shower by her self 90% of the time and is washing her own hair I don't think she is using enough conditioner. but there is no way I can give her a bath everynight. when I do every now and then it kills my back because she is so tall.

please keep the suggestion coming. I am going to look at getting that book and I will be back to using a comb.

I have some of the thickest curls ever (seriously. don't make me post a picture) I have three rules I live by.

1. a hairbrush is never ever ever to come near my hair. seriously. I think I'd probably kill someone for trying to brush my hair.
2. wash it often if you use products and when you wash, shampoo once, condition twice. (i'll elaborate if you wish)
3. love your hair and your hair will love you. Oily hair needs to be washed, dry hair needs to be moistened, soft hair needs to stay that way. Love you hair, love yourself.

I swear by Aussie Moist. It is by far the best conditioner I've ever had. and the three minute treatment is to dye for. I can feel the difference as soon as it goes on my head.

I use wide tooth combs (very very wide tooth. maybe 6or 7 teeth in all) and I only touch my hair with it when its wet and has conditioner on it. I'm tender headed, so only I can do this. it hurts so bad if someone else trys to comb my hair.

There is a product that keeps flyaways from occouring too. Its made by ION and its called luster cream. One squirt if my hair is up three if my hair is down.

I also use a generic gell if I need it to stay in place

Never hair spray. It causes build up on your scalp that really itches.

goodluck!

As has been said:

NEVER brush
NEVER blow dry
ONLY comb when wet
HUGE AMOUNTS of conditioner

It's the only way. Braiding (sp?) it when wet can also help. But don't be amazed if it's still wet 12 hours later.

My daughter has curly hair. I always condition it well and then comb it out with a wide tooth comb while she is still in the tub. Her hair is long, so most of the time I put it in one or two braids. Having it long is easier for me to manage. When it's shorter it's a rats nest!
