Thick hair..

I have quite a head full of thick hair..and I mean thick. It's down to my mid back and wavy. Now, I was wondering how many ladies out there have thick hair like this..and what do you do with your hair? Do you request a certain style at the salon? Do you have an easy way of dealing with it? I can only wear it down if I straighten it, which takes too long. Otherwise it's up in a bun..which is not the most attractive thing in the world, and gets me so frustrated cuz I have to have it just right :furious: . So what are you takes on the situation??

I have fine hair - almost baby fine. But a LOT of it. So much so that it looks like it's thicker than it is until you touch it. My hair won't hold most barrettes because they just slide out. I'm usually relegated to a ponytail to keep it up, but I actually have it cut fairly short right now.

I have very thick hair and it's such a pain in the butt in the summer! I've found the only way to deal with it is to keep it shoulder length or even chin length and layered. I also have my stylist thin it out with a razor when she layers it so it's not as thick and full but it grows back fast so it has to be done a lot. It feels so light afterwards! My main tip is to not let it get too long or else it's up in a ponytail all the time.

I second what LadyyRedd said! Fine hair, but TONS of it! I am sooo "the pony tail lady." It takes me more than an hour just to blow dry it (which is why I usually just air dry most of the time), and I have to curl or straighten it if I want to leave it down, as it is wavy. Who has the time for all of that?

I've tried getting it thinned at a salon (a razor cut) but it makes the ends frizzy and weak. I guess things could be worse than a having a lot of hair, but it sure can be a pain. Especially when I have to take apart the vacuum every week to "de-fuzz."

I shed worse than an English sheepdog!!! :rotfl:

I get it cut for the summer. I can't stand it. I get it cut with with tons of layering to take out the thickness. It is about a little below shoulder length.

I don't know why you can only wear it down if it's straightened. What happens? Oh, and how often are you shampooing? Doing that every day dries out hair, which causes the frizz.

I get comments every time I go to the hairdresser about how thick my hair is. Mine's also curly, and I have it in a layered bob, about chin length. It's wash-and-wear hair. :)

That is my hair exactly. I had 7 inches cut off just before our vacation in April and I LOVE it now... It's just past my shoulders, just barely.

I also have thick curly hair. I hate it most of the time. Right now my hair is a little below the shoulders, cut in a V form.

When curly, I usually let it in its natural state with stay in conditioner (or normal conditioner) and some serum. Mousse or gels never work in my hair.
But I usually blow-dry my hair more. It gets straighter with the help of chemical treatments.

I have thick wavy hair. It's so heavy that the only way the curls come out is if my hair is kept with razored layers. I can't stand it past my shoulders because it's just too heavy.

I have VERY VERY thick hair. But mine is stick straight. So layering is the way to go for me. It helps a little bit with all the hair I have. It takes forever for it to dry, lol.

Very thick hair here. :thumbsup2 I keep my hair around shoulder length and layered. She cuts it the layers with a razor. Then she thins it out. I get my hair thinnned out about every 6 months.

I cut mine where it is slightly shorter in the front and longer in the back - keeps me from getting triangle hair in the front. I also layer it all over. If I don't, it hangs really flat on top and then poofs out in its waves. Every once in awhile I straighten it with a flat iron for a different look - but it won't stay straight all day. Most days I put a curl gel in it wet, blow dry it slightly scrunching it while I do to bring out the curl and don't dry it all the way - it would take too long and would fry my hair.

I also have thick hair and a natural wave. Drives me crazy! Takes forever to dry. I keep it cut just a little above my shoulders, and the last time I was at the salon, she cut it with the razor and it worked wonders. I usually straighten it, too, but try not to do it every day.

I noticed almost everyone with thick hair has it cut short with layers. I used to have mine about shoulder length and I just looked like a pouff head!! lol..it's true. If I just wash it and let it dry naturally it gets a bit of a wave in the back..but not enough of a wave to wear it curly. So it ends up being this half waved half straight frizzy in some spots hair thing. i try everything for the frizz..but I do live in humidity drenched FL :sad2:

Frizz happens when your hair is too dry. I generally shampoo very infrequently, maybe once a week and with very gentle stuff. When I don't shampoo, I rinse my hair and put conditioner in it at the ends. Humidity is my friend; my hair just looks curlier when it's humid.

Thick and long checking in here. I have a lot of wave and different types of wave (some outright curly, some nearly straight) and cut short, it just doesn't balance out.

My hair is also super silky so it doesn't stay up well at all. I get it cut with long layers. My longest layer is what I call "bra strap" length and my shortest is near my chin. By doing super long layers it takes out a TON of bulk.

If I need to lose the frizz (and even at long lengths that can happen to me) I ask for it to be more "textured" and to remove the bulk. If I ask for that, it comes out great. Usually my stylist can feel when it really needs to be "de-bulked". It seems like I lose about half my hair volume when that happens. I don't seem to need it quite so much every time I go, but at least every other cut I get that done.

I can now wash and go with my hair. It hangs beautifully and I can wear it with soft curls, severe wave or poker straight (I agree, takes a LONG time) or a ponytail. I can tell you though, 9 times out of 10 I just wash it and go... let it air dry.

Good luck :)

I have extremely thick curly hair. I was never so happy as when I got my hair cut in layers. Water can almost go through it now, lol, and it doesn't take 4 days to dry. Short layers are even better!

I have thick, wavy hair, too. I get mine's cut every 2 months. I use a flattening iron or I just blow dry with warm air and I sometimes use Glass made by Redken, too, to style.

that's so funny! I actually had mine done in early April too, before out trip to WDW. I was not looking forward to Florida humidty with that thick hair so I had to do something before our trip. I had about 6 inches cut off. I love it and have gotten so many compliments on it.

to the OP to keep my hair from looking frizzy I usually put straightening balm in it while it's damp and then blow dry using a big barrel round brush so I can pull my hair around the brush while it dries which straightens it and makes it silkier, reduces frizz. I can never ever let it air dry on it's own or it looks like I touched an electrical socket!

I have very thick, very curly hair. I used to wear it shoulder length and what worked for me was vertical layering. I don't know how they do it, but I had it done at Vidal Sassoon in Chicago and it was gorgeous.

Could never find anybody in Richmond who could do it right so I cut it all off and donated it to Lock of Love. It was so thick, I gave them 3-ten inch ponytails!!!! I've kept it short ever since and I love the freedom of wash-and-go.
