They're not fruit flies....HELP!

Ok, I am getting SO annoyed with these little bugs, and I'm hoping someone here can help me. At first we thought we had fruit flies, tried the apple cider vinegar trap...apparently whatever these things are do not like apple cider vinegar. DH fertilized the grass this weekend, and we're thinking maybe they came out of that and snuck in our house, but we don't know what they are so we don't know how to get rid of them! Theres a lot upstairs, by lights, by water, tons were in my daughters diaper genie (attracted apparently to poop) so we put that in the garage. They're always 1 at a time but everywhere! They look like a slightly bigger fruit fly, very fast, look kindof mosquito - ey too. Does anyone have any idea what these could be or any suggestions to get rid of them? I'm willing to try many suggestions. Thank you!

I used to have those...I noticed they liked the bathroom, so I boiled up a kettle of water, and poured a little boiling water in all the drains; sink, shower and tub. I think they might need water to breed. Hope this helps....

You should be able to take them to your county extension office and have them identified. If they don't know what they are, they will let you know where you can mail them and have them identified (for a small fee). The extension service can also give you suggestions on how to get rid of them. Good luck!

I am losing my mnd with these bugs in my house. I did the vinegar thing. They would actually find their way out of the tiny Saran Wrap holes.

Help me too!

Have you tried spraying RAID around all the areas that the bugs have been around? I would think this would at least help.

WARNING- the following information is gross:


Those little (but not too little) flies live off damp, organic stuff. We used to call them drain flies; they could live (and grow) in the crud stuck inside drain pipes; but also: floor drains; over watered plants; old food; diaper pails; damp soil; manure; etc.

They can basically live in anything organic, damp and decomposing.

They can be hard to get rid of, but not impossible. Pour foaming drain cleaner down all your drains. Follow this up with a pot of boiling water every couple of days to keep the crud down. Clean up any "decaying" material in your house; tie any garbage into plastic grocery bags before you toss it. Keep the diaper pail out for a while. Pick up some bug traps for any plants; they look like post its, but are sticky all over; leave them right in the pots, and let the plants dry out as much as you dare.

OK. That is gross, but I think you're right. I have to go get some liquid plumber because we have been infested here with them for over a week. They are driving me crazy!!!
