They Tried To Make Me Go To Rehab, But I Said No No No! Updt 11/7: Solo no more Pg.27

I just found your report and got hooked. I love it!

I hope you are safe from the hurricane and your home is in good shape when you return.

Can't wait to read more when things settle back down.

:goodvibes I'm so glad you & your family are safe, take the kids to Sea World & have fun. You all deserve it after what you've been through.
You will continue to be in my prayers.

I'm so glad you posted to let us know you're all okay :)

I am so glad to hear you are all safe and your house and their school has held up so well!

I also agree that SW would be a wonderful diversion for the boys ~ add some fun and joy to this otherwise stressful situation.

I hope everything continues to go well, and that everyone remains safe and everything intact.

Glad to hear you're all OK! Hugs and hope you get to return home soon and all is OK when you get there. Hang in there!

Jen, I'm so glad you let us know that you are all safe and that there wasn't too much damage to your home. Thank God. I hope that your community returns to normal as soon as possible. I agree that going to Sea World would be good for all of you. It's so nice to hear you keep that positive attitude of yours. God Bless.

Yay!!! So glad to hear from you. I have been thinking about you and your family and I'm very happy to know you are safe. I know how hard it is to pack up your life and be away from home not knowing when you get to go back. Just stay strong and think of it as an adventure, like your boys are doing! Thanks for keeping us posted:hug:

I've been thinking of you and wonder how you are doing. Have you made it back home yet? Let us know when you can.

Dear Friends,

Just wanted to update everyone on our situation here in Houston.

It has been a very trying week.

We returned home Sunday before last to a city which was utterly devastated, to say the least.

Trees are down, many windows are broken in high-rises, and roofs were blown off many homes. Numerous traffic lights are not working, or worse, dangerously hanging by their electric cords - destroyed by the winds/rain.

There are very long lines in the few gas stations which are open. At this time, half of the city still has no electric power (since September 12)!
Many people are suffering in the sweltering Houston heat. Worse is that there is hardly any fresh food/perishables to be bought from the handful of grocery stores that are open.

Fortunately, our house stood strong against the hurricane with no visible damage. Some parts of our fence were knocked down, but nothing major. We have bottled water enough for a few weeks. Our pantry is overflowing with canned goods.

My Aunt MJ's house had electricity two days after the storm. She welcomed us into her home, to shelter us from Houston's stifling heat (although, as a small consolation, the weather turned cool a day after the hurricane left). She, however, has had no working internet connection.

Our home's electric power was finally restored this past Wednesday.
We are still having trouble with cable and internet, though.

The boys' school re-opened today after being closed for a week and a half. The school had some minor wind damage, but had been repaired since.

My workplace still has no electricity, and is running on generator power which can only support half of the lights and electric fans.

DH and Jake cleaned out our fridge which was full of smelly, spoiled food (because our house had no electric power for days). They threw everything out. Jake says it was the grossest thing ever! ;)

In spite of everything, we are in a relatively good situation, thank God. Others Houstonians have had their homes destroyed, have no food nor water, and have no one to turn to for help. They are relying on the government to assist them, but the assistance seems never fast enough.

Please continue to keep us in your thoughts and prayers. I hope to post more regularly when the digital cable/internet situation stabilizes...

I cannot thank you enough for all your prayers and words of concern.
They have been a blessing during these difficult times.

Jen

We've been thinking of you. I am glad your house is standing and that you have food. You are blessed. I hope help comes soon to those who are in need. We take so much for granted every single day of our lives. Thanks for keeping us updated.

I am so glad to hear that you are all safe Jen  You will continue to be in my thoughts and prayers

Hello Dis-friends!

This will be the last update I will be posting about Hurricane Ike. I am determined to get my TR back on track. Plus, I desperately need to get caught up with everyone else's (this is therapeutic for me! :)).

Things are looking up around here. I am happy to report that most of Houston now has electric power - and the food, gas and traffic situation is normalizing slowly but surely. Our house and yard is well on its way to looking like it was before, and electicity has been restored to my workplace.

The boys are back in school, and it appears that everything is getting back to "normal", school-wise. They even had a Houston Astros day at school today, and were requested to wear Astros gear and cheer for the team on its last weekend of the season.

DH is out to his regular Friday night poker game, but promised to work very hard on the yard and home clean-up tasks scheduled tomorrow. The boys are playing on the PS3 as I type.

No longer are there sad, depressed faces 'round my community, it seems. :)

I finally finished pulling off the duct tape from all our windows -- a huge accomplishment! ;) The neighbors smiled and waved at me while I was "Windex-ing" the windows. It was nice to see the children playing in the streets again.

I also had my nails done for the first time since Hurricane Ike, and I was so glad to be doing everyday mundane things. MeMom was right - we do take a lot of things for granted until they are suddenly taken away from us. I hope I will always be thankful for all the blessings I have in my life, and I hope to be more empathetic towards others who are in unfortunate circumstances.

Thank you :grouphug: to all of you who have supported me with your kind words through the past weeks:

Now back to my Disney Trip Report.......

Jen

When I last left y'all, I had just finished conquering Splash Mountain, and was headed to a first-time experience....

carpet1.jpg

I had always wanted to ride on Aladdin's Magic Carpets, but always voted down by the boys who find the ride "baby-ish" and not thrilling enough!

I confess, I find the idea of riding on a magic flying carpet romantic and mysterious ;) And as I mentioned before, one of my favorite Philharmagic moments is when Jasmine and Aladdin soar over the city of Agrabah on their dreamy carpet ride!

carpetride.jpg

There was a very short line when I got to the ride, and I practically walked-on. No one else sat behind nor beside me, and I had one whole carpet all to myself! Yay!

IMG_5741.jpg

I pushed the scarab in front of me to control the height, and I reached behind to the other scarab to control the dip/pitch of my ride.

I noticed that there was a pool of water at the base of the ride. I read that the imagineers put it there so you can look down at your reflection in the water just as Jasmine and Aladdin do in the film. How totally cool is that?!

I tried to avoid being spit at by that naughty camel:

carpet2.jpg

And finally figured that if you fly as high as the carpet will go, you'll avoid getting wet. Plus you get a "new fantastic point of view" of Adventureland. ;)

I thouroughly enjoyed this ride, and make a note to self to make time to go on it again later in the day.

After I get off my carpet, I feel a great big hunger pang. I remember I had not had anything to eat since dining with the Princesses at Akershus yesterday evening. So, I quickly walk over to:

aloha-1.jpg

And order a favorite WDW snack:

A Dole Pineapple float! Yum!

While I savor its tropical goodness, I decide to get in line for:

potc.jpg

There was a line short enough for me to be able to finish my float before I boarded the boat.

I must say that I really do prefer DL's version of POTC over WDW's. POTC is much longer at DL than it is at the MK. WDW seems to have received the abridged version of the attraction as DL’s has a much longer prelude, and has extra scenes at the end that were left out of the MK's version of the ride. I still enjoy riding it, though, and love its gift shop at the end with all the pirate toys/curio.

Next, I go on an exotic nautical adventure:

junglecruise.jpg

I was seated on the benches in the middle of the boat, so my pictures came out with other people's heads on the bottom :upsidedow. This was one where I cropped them out:

I found the skipper quite hilarious with his very dry sense of humour. I think the tongue-in-cheek, constant stream of puns is extremely amusing. Everytime I ride this, I always pick-up a new joke I don't recall hearing the last time.

As I walk away from the Jungle Cruise, I see a large group of people congregating by the entrance to POTC. I come closer to see what all the commotion is about:

It's Captain Jack's Pirate Tutorial!

I manage to weave my way to the front to get a pretty good view of the (ahem) very hot Johnny Depp look-alike. I will let the photos speak for themselves:

IMG_5748.jpg

Another great thing about solo-tripping: enjoying "the view" guilt-free, without being rushed by DH and the boys!

After the tutorial, I glance at my watch and I see that I need to get going in order to be on time for my lunch ADR.

I head towards Main St. and get side-tracked by the Dream-Along-With-Mickey show in front of the Castle. Then, I run into these two gorgeously garbed citizens of Main Street:

I finally reach my destination, Tony's Town Square:

tonys.jpg

I am directed by the man standing behind the podium outside to check-in inside (a little confusing). At this point, to add to the confusion, I am also on the phone with WDW-DINE, trying to make/cancel/rearrange ADR's in order to accomodate the arrival of my beloved boys.

I am seated at a nice corner table, and knowing that I want spaghetti and meatballs, I politely tell the waiter that I do not need to see the menu. I order on the spot. :)

I love the rustic Lady and the Tramp water fountain in the center of the restaurant:

tonys-1-1.jpg

The food arrives, and I get a huge portion. And in spite of it being quite delicious, I barely finish half of it. :rolleyes1

After my filling meal, I have one clear objective in mind --

tomorrowland.jpg

To conquer Tomorrowland!

And for that, you'll have to stay tuned for the next chapter. ;)

Great update. I love the fact that you had a Dole Whip for breakfast. I might have to try that next time. Normal rules don't apply at Disney, right?

So glad that Houston and your neighborhood are getting back on track. Continues prayers for you and your family and friends.

First off, glad to hear that life is resuming for you and your neighbors!

Great shot of the camel spitting! LOL! And it sounds like a wonderfully fun and relaxing time you are having! I have never eaten at Tony's but that fountain is just too cute! I love L&the T, might have to pop in there sometime!

Allyson :)

I am so glad that you are back. I was worried about you and I was missing your report. Yea for your update.

Great update and photos, looking forward to the next installment. Glad to hear life is getting back to normal for you and your family. :)
