These Are The MAYS of our Lives- The MAYers, Part VI

Belle's teacher just emailed me (I love love love her) and said that the little boy that sits right across from Belle tested positive for the flu last night after school.

Ugh! I keep waiting to hear Eliska has it. Thankfully, even with being in daycare every day, she's been pretty healthy. Poor Belle :(

Happy Birthday Emmy!!! princess: :flower3: :woohoo: :yay: :goodvibes

Indeed! Happy Birthday!!!!!

Just a question for all of you, as moms...when I was homeschooling my kids, and one of them got chicken pox -- mind you, this was before there was a vaccine -- a couple of homeschooling moms wanted me to bring him to their house to purposely expose their kids to the chicken pox -- both families had 7 or 8 kids. I guess they figured they'd like all their kids to get it and be done with it. But sheesh -- why would you want to make your kids sick on purpose? What if they never got chicken pox? And what about the other related diseases or problems they might get later, like shingles? Maybe another mom on here can provide a different perspective?

Well, when I got chicken pox in kindergarten, my mom made me go play with my younger brothers (we were all 15-18 months apart) so that they would be sick at the same time. She wanted to go through it with all of us at once instead of at 3 different times. Back then, it was just something people did. There was no vaccine and it was/is far better to get chicken pox as a young child than to get it as a teen or adult.

That being said, we got Eliska vaccinated. Chicken pox isn't going to be as common a childhood disease now that people vaccinate for it. I didn't figure she'd catch it the old fashioned way easy as a child so it was just better to try to ensure she never gets it.

Would it be worth it to not have a monorail, and have to go by boat to the MK and then switch at TTC to go to, say, Epcot? Which is what we would do.

The convenience of having the monorail & boat to MK and being without walking distance of the monorail to Epcot is HUGE. We never fought crowds to get back forth between those parks. Plus, at the end of a long day, it's nice to be able to get on your transportation back to the hotel easily and not have to deal with standing in line to wait to go back.

Also, since you are doing the DxDP, I'm not sure you'd get all that much out of CL food offerings. That's really one of the bonuses of staying CL and if you aren't going to use it much, you may not find CL as valuable as others. That being said, one advance of CL is that they'll take care of all your ADRs for you (huge for me as I didn't want to get up at 4am to be on the line for 7am EST) and you gain access to the CL boat for both MK & Epcot fireworks shows. It'll cost you some to go on those boats, but I did learn that they have one boat for CL guests and one boat for Platinum guests usually. You don't have to fight and hope you get a fireworks cruise rezzie like the common folk :snooty:

Just more food for thought :p

Woot! Thanks!

I like the Poly- although I haven't stayed there- but from what I can tell- it is a neat resort. I just kinda feel like--- okay--- people are probably gonna think I'm nuts-- but it sort of reminds me of the 1970's Brady Bunch goes to Hawaii kitschy theme thing going on.

Heh..I can totally see that. But see, I kind of dig the 70s. Kitsch can make me giggle like no tomorrow when done properly.

I'm really anxious to hear what you think, Shelly, about going right before the hustle and bustle of Christmas, as opposed to going right after the hustle and bustle of Christmas. It was nice to still have something to look forward to last year, even when Christmas was over.

Maybe I just need to screw it and go in January again! :rotfl2: (Just not to DHS on a F! day!) I don't know how Mr. Trixie would feel about potentially cold temps again, though. :headache: Last year was just a fluke, right???

Well I think you and I pretty much had the same thoughts on the January crowds. Some good days, some crazy days. So I will let you know if it is more or less crowded.

I think the highs of 50 were a fluke. I think they may have even set a record low when we were there. Lucky us. But I honestly didn't think it was that bad. Especially when the rest of the week was 78-80. I'll take that any day over 94-95 all week like one of our trips. :sad2:

I think we might feel a little let down after the holiday's with no Disney trip to look forward to. Especially when this trip was originally planned for January. But I'm glad we are going in November. I got a much better deal with free dining at POR and 40% off at OKW than I would have gotten in January with the 4/3 and no gift card.

Shelly--- word.

:lmao:

Crowded to me is when you go into EPCOT and there's a line outside and winding around to go into Spaceship Earth.

That = a bad day to me.:goodvibes

May has spoiled me--- of course- I'm seen the MK so crowded it looked like a sea of people moving in tandem, so...... I guess it's all relative.

Wow people waiting for Spaceship Earth - that is a bad day!! :rotfl:

There was no line for Spaceship Earth in January. But when there was a 40 minute wait for Star Tours I knew we were in for a bad day at DHS. :sad2: I've never had to wait for that thing before - ever!! I don't even remember what the RNRC wait was.

LOL Jo...when went over to Poly for breakfast and looked around at the resort, I thought hey this is nice, but it seems kind of out of
place for some strange reason.

But it is like this...WDW is a "theme" park resort. You are experiencing their version of Polynesia in the Florida swampland. You are there to get a taste of it there - not the whole thing. The hotel resorts are sort of like the theme parks - you get a taste of the wild west (Frontierland - Fort Wilderness) a taste of the future (Tomorrowland - Contemporary), a taste of the exotic (Aventureland - Animal Kingdom Lodge) etc. All in one place in the middle of Florida!

I am with you Jo...I like the real deal, Maui, Kauai, etc. The beaches and sunsets are amazing on those islands and it doesn't compare to what you experience at WDW.

But, the Poly is a special place and Disney has done a lot of nice things there and they do take very good care of their guests from what I have heard. In the end, much of the guest experience has to do with your personal frame of mind and your expectations. I am sure you and Mark would have a wonderful time at the Poly because you both will enjoy spending this amazing time together and appreciate the WDW experience.

Sea

I think that is what is bugging me and keeping the WL in my mind.:confused3

Sort of .... hokey? i don't know. After being at the Grand Wailea resort in Maui-- I just don't know about it.

Of course- I don't think any WDW resort is worth the $$$$ they ask for them, but that's just my Opinion.

OMG one of my old neighbors just called to tell me that there were 4 accidents in front of our old house yesterday. And one of them involved 2 of the neighbors. They (2 ladies) were in the same car coming home from Church group and someone hit them as they were pulling into the development. One of them is in our local hospital and the other was life flighted. She didn't know where. Probably Pittsburgh. I can't believe this. Well, I can, but still. How terrible. I hope they are alright.

I am sorry to hear about the accident. It seems that the city/county really needs to take a hard look why there are so many accidents in that area and come up with a plan to prevent further accidents. I hope your neighbors are ok.

Oh Shelly -- I hope they are ok!

Thanks for the input about the chicken pox, everybody. I'm sure it had to do with there being no vaccine available -- and I know that one of the families that wanted me to bring my son over were opposed to vaccinations anyway. And I got them when I was 14 (from a 2 year old I babysat), and remember it being awful. But the toddler I got them from? He had them in his ears, on his EYELIDS, poor kid was horribly miserable, so having them young isn't necessarily easier. My biggest concern is that having chicken pox, ever, can lead to other problems -- like shingles, bacterial infection, or neurological, respiratory, or liver complications. Maybe people didn't think -- or know -- about those things and just thought about it as a simple "childhood" disease their kids would eventually get anyway? :confused3

Sea...I liked your comparison of the WDW resorts to the whole "theme" aspect of Disney -- I can't believe I never connected the resort themes to the land and area themes at MK! I always wondered what the whole concept was behind the Contemporary, and now it makes sense -- it's like Tomorrowland  One of the biggest reasons we chose POFQ was because we love New Orleans Square at DL so much, and really missed going there at WDW (Liberty Squre is cool, but just not the same feel). So, why isn't there a resort themed to Fantasyland? That would be so cool... And no, the castle suite doesn't count because it's just TOO exclusive!

I'm on the same page as Tas -- kitsch done right can be a blast. I love the PT50's Cafe (our dinner and drinks were delicious), and even though we only had shakes there, I also loved the Sci Fi Drive In :thumbsup2

Shelly--- I sure hope your old neighbors are okay. Keep us posted if you find anything out. I bet you are so happy that you moved from there--- It is just so dangerous- and I'm very surprised that nothing's been done with it up to this point.

Chicken pox. I forgot to add to my post earlier that Drew got the Varicella shot-when he was a baby but that was the year they had some sort of issue with it- and a lot of the immunizations they were giving didn't cause immunity.
So in 2005, Drew had a couple of bumps on his tummy- and a sore throat at the same time. Being the good nurse that I am-;) I said 'Eh- he's had the shot, he doesn't have the C.Pox'. So a few days go by, still complaining- take him in to the dr. Sure enough- C Pox as well as Strep throat.
He's also had Strep throat and the flu at the same time, but I'll leave that one for another day.:rotfl2:

:):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):)

I like the Brady Bunch---- and my favorite episode is the Hawaii one. That was just really great. But I'm worried that after spending that much moolah, I'll be disappointed and wish for POFQ. Which I'm sure will not happen.

Arrrgh.

I'm driving you all batty, I know.

But Sea- you are right- the theme is there. I think it's neat.

Say hey.... I could do BC for even cheaper......:rolleyes1
:scared1:

Kidding. Mark doesn't like the Boardwalk area.

Just thought I'd throw that one in there to make you lose it.
Jo

He's also had Strep throat and the flu at the same time, but I'll leave that one for another day.:rotfl2:

My freshman year of college right before the end of the year and finals, I got mono. While I had mono, I started to break out in a rash. In the past, when I had this particular type of rash, it meant I had strep. I've had strep without a sore throat before (I'm freakish like that I suppose).

Anyway, my mom sees the rash and tells me I have strep and we need to go in and get antibiotics for it. We go into the doctor and he INSISTS you can't have mono and strep at the same time. He looks indignant at my mother when she insists on a strep culture. I was sooooo embarrassed at the time.

Sure enough, later that day we get a call from the doctor's nurse saying I had strep.

The lesson I learned from that: Don't doubt a mother when a mother knows!

Please excuse me while I have a very proud mama moment!!!
But I just have to share with all of my mayer friends.

Only 4 weeks at a new school...and Ethan was announced as student of the month for the second grade class.:thumbsup2:woohoo:

That is so very neat, Lake! I know he was so very proud! He must be doing really good and adjusting very easily.

I tell ya-- it's hard on kids going to new schools sometimes. But at the same time, it teaches them to learn to adapt and be willing to face changes head on.

Good for Ethan!:goodvibes

Morning all my Other MAYers.

WE are doing a bit better here this AM I think, although the kids haven't gotten up yet. I think Drew's fever finally broke yesterday areound 2 pm.

Belle is feeling a ton better last night, but I don't know how she's doing today yet.

Hope all is well in MAYerland.:thumbsup2

Sea-- I'll be back in awhile to give my thoughts on Adventures By Disney.;) I have to have coffee first.

JO

Mooooooooooooooooooooooooooorning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :goodvibes

I'm back!!! WOW!!!! Part 6!!!!!!!!!! Nice job guys! :rotfl:

I never thought that I would be so happy to be home. Cleveland was OK. It was a little bit hectic for those of us who volunteered for the whole week because after the first shipment of people left - we were trying to show the new people what was up. And trying to keep up with all the work and not make anyone angry that works there all the time.... (apparently they're all very touchy about their printers....)

And I think that I realized after our trip to O.C. with 8 PEOPLE  sharing one condo - that Disney is the place for us and we are really over the whole "squeeze a ton of people in a a tiny space for a week and try to pay as little as possible" thing. Vacations are definitely falling into a quality over quantity category for us now.

Anything big happen while I was gone? popcorn::

Yay for Ethan!!!:banana::banana: Three banana SALUTE!!!

Hi RF  Good to see you....I started my TR...

Hey Jo, since I was behind (but not swiney-hiney ) in my TR homework, I completed TWO assignments today...

But now I owe, I owe, so off to work I go!

Hey RF!!! Glad you made it home!

Yep- there comes a point in your life where you become hotel snobish and desire more from your vacations than being crammed into a room with other peeps. Oh my--- will this set your Maui plans back a bit?

Let's see- I had the swine, now Drew may or may not have it (He tested neg.) and now I am off to the dr with Belle b/c she is sick now. And Mcat woke up feeling green but I sent her off to school anyway.

:confused3

I've been in the house for two weeks. I now answer the phone- "Jo's infirmary, which patient are you looking for?"

Other than that----
Mark gave me the green light for a MAY trip- and he wants to stay at the Poly this time, but I am agonizing over the decision. I sort of want WL. CL.:lmao: For $165 more.:rotfl:

So- there you have it. Two weeks in a nutshell, from Jo's side.

Hope work is good for you today.:wizard:

JO

Good morning MAYers!

Welcome home RF! :goodvibes

Hope that nasty flu is out of your house soon JO. :sad2:

Congrats to Ethan Lake!

Hope all is well with the rest of the MAYers. I am just happy that it is October!!! :cool1: Which means that it will soon be NOVEMBER!!!!!!!!!!!!!:woohoo:

Yep Jo.... Bob and I are seriously reconsidering Maui. :sad2: The friends that we would go with are our BFF's - so they wouldn't be the problem AT ALL. But, being at the beach this week and not having much money to do anything made me realize that while it would be awesome to be able to go to Hawaii sooner rather than later - we don't want to skimp out on that trip.

If we go in the spring - it will be a bare bones, no frills vacation, spending all the money that we have getting there and putting a roof over our heads. I think that we may just have to save our Hawaii trip for when we can do it up right. :goodvibes
