Thanks for all the birthday wishes everyopne... I will show her each and everyone when she gets home...

and Y'all may have been more my word than hers Jo...... Not sure what it is when I chat with my mayers. :rotfl:

Off to bake a birthday cake...be back soon.

Seeing as we're asking for advice/info about upcoming trips today...

do any of you know if Jersey week is as big a deal at Universal as it supposedly is at WDW?

Anyone?

I think so, I think they pretty much hit the entire Orlando area that week. . .

But then I know nothing about the crowd levels at Universal.

Why? popcorn::

Hi MAYers!

Happy Birthday to Emmy!

So sorry about the Swine Flu at the JoBird home! Get well soon!!!

Hmm... I had Chicken Pox when I was 16 and it was the pits. Well, it left a few pits on me. My kids have had the vaccine. But in light of having it at the age of 16, I would have purposefully exposed my kids to early. When you are 16 and have a zit you freak!!!! :scared1: Just imagine having 32 of those pox on your face as a teenager. Luckily, the ones that left marks on me where on my arms or body as that is where I broke out first.

My mom did have me play with a little girl who had it when I was in 2nd grade, but I didn't catch it. Of course, I waited until I was 16 and helping with Sunday School at church to catch from one of those little munchkins!

Well, I have been so busy with getting ready for the race space to open. I am heading out to work up there right now!

Have a great day!!!

Well, we're (I'm) looking at the first week of November for next year, which I assume is Jersey Week. IF the school schedule is the same as this year, we could potentially be gone from October 29 - November November 7 (10 days) and the girls would only have to miss 2 1/2 days of school (maybe 3 1/2 depending what time we left on the 29th).

And by that time, WWOHP (Wizarding World of Harry Potter) will be open at Universal, and there's no way DD10 will let us miss it if we're right down the street!!!

This trip is becoming very complicated, by the way. I think my parents AND my sister want to come! :scared1:

I'd rather go with the MAYers. :sad2:

Jo~are you concerned at all that the Poly will seem like a let-down after you were just at such a beautiful resort in ACTUAL Hawaii? :upsidedow

I think that is what is bugging me and keeping the WL in my mind.:confused3

I like the Poly- although I haven't stayed there- but from what I can tell- it is a neat resort. I just kinda feel like--- okay--- people are probably gonna think I'm nuts-- but it sort of reminds me of the 1970's Brady Bunch goes to Hawaii kitschy theme thing going on.

Sort of .... hokey? i don't know. After being at the Grand Wailea resort in Maui-- I just don't know about it.

Of course- I don't think any WDW resort is worth the $$$$ they ask for them, but that's just my Opinion.

As far as Jersey week--- I've only been to Universal once for one day- so I don't know about the jersey week crowds there. But I will say that during Jersey week in 2006 at wdw- it was very crowded and i was happy to leave after two days. (we had been there for the week leading up to Halloween. The crowds got larger and larger as it neared Jersey week.)

Are you thinking of going to FL this year ?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Next year's date of the convention is Nov 4-5th. So yep- that would be Jersey week.

Depending on what kind of a vacation you'd want- you could potentially keep ahead of the crowds if you're commando tourists. TGM will show you how.

I think a big group could be fun- how many would you have? Enough for a Grand gatherings?

Jo

Trix, what is your new school's policy on "excused absences"?

I don't think I'd go Jersey Week. We are arriving the last day of Jersey Week and aren't expecting to do much until the weekend is over.
Hopefully they will all be heading back north when we are heading south! :wizard: Luckily for us our parent/teacher conferences are the second week in November. So my kids are only actually missing 2 full days and 3 half days. So what's that, like 3 1/2 days? :rotfl: Not bad for a 9 day vacation!

Ooohhh your DD10 will love the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal!! When is it supposed to open?

No, this would be for November 2010.

My issues are...school schedule (should I really take them out for a week again when DD10 will be in middle school), Jersey week crowds, and the decorations! Silly, I know. But I'd much rather see the fall decorations than the Christmas ones at this point. And do they start the changeover right after Halloween? I don't want to see horribly strange looking parks, either, with half fall and half Christmas.

And I think I'd seriously expire if my castle had a crane next to it while they were putting lights up. :faint:

Okay- here's the thing-
2006- Halloweeen night- fall decorations, fun fall themes- pumpkins, scarecrows. Went home at midnight- 9 hours later--got to AK at 9 am for opening........

Christmas trees EVERYWHERE- Christmas carols- Minnie Mouse in her winter gear complete with gloves and scarf.

MK- after lunch-- Christmas music playing, garland everywhere- Christmas trees. My kids actually GROANED b/c we had done Christmas for two years prior to that and they were sick of seeing the parks decked out for Christmas.

:lmao:

It's amazing how quickly they change everything over.

I think now though, they have a MNSSHP on Nov 1st, so it wouldn't be changed over until the 2nd or 3rd.

I asked their elementary school this summer how they felt about family vacations during school and the secretary said it wasn't a big deal at all, so long as they weren't gone during state testing. Maybe I'll call the middle school and see what kind of a vibe I get.

I don't think it will ever be as easy as it was at the private school. The principal actually told us to be go for longer! Heeeeeyyyy...waaaait a minute...that makes it sound like she didn't want us around! :scratchin

Let's hope and pray that our conferences are the second week of November next year instead of the first! That would solve most of my problems. But this year they are the first week.

Everything I read about Jersey week is totally conflicting. Some people say it's no big deal and others say it's absolutely horrible. What's up with that???

WWOHP is supposed to open in the spring. Spring 2010 is all they're saying at this point. It looks AMAZING from the drawings/photos that I've seen! There is a whole thread about it in the Universal section. :wizard:

Hey! That was just on TV the other night!!! :lmao: I watched the part when Greg entered the surfing competition. What was he thinking? :lmao:

I think you're justified in thinking that about the Poly. I can't really judge because I've never seen it, but I don't know if I want my memories of Hawaii tainted, you know?

When does the school set their schedule for the following school year? Ours is done in the spring. Hopefully you will know by May so you can start planning. ADR's are going back to 180 days.

Hopefully your conferences will be the 2nd week of November, but if not then you'll just have to do the best that you can with what you have to work with - Jersey Week!

I think what some people think are low crowds others find it to be crowded. Remember how we thought January was fairly busy and others that went that same week said they thought it was slow (although I know we are right! ;)) ? I think for me after going in May 2007 anything seems busy. But to someone who has only gone at Christmas and/or summer may think other times are really slow.

Here's how I judge - if regular attractions are over a 20-30 minute wait and popular ones are over an hour - it's busy. So when TT and Soarin were at 90 minutes in January that was crazy to me. Someone who usually goes at a busier time when TT & Soarin are always at 120 minutes might think that 60-90 minutes is great.

So if I get to the parks and regular rides say 10-20 minutes and popular ones are under an hour, then I know it's going to be a good day!

I'm really anxious to hear what you think, Shelly, about going right before the hustle and bustle of Christmas, as opposed to going right after the hustle and bustle of Christmas. It was nice to still have something to look forward to last year, even when Christmas was over.

Maybe I just need to screw it and go in January again! :rotfl2: (Just not to DHS on a F! day!) I don't know how Mr. Trixie would feel about potentially cold temps again, though. :headache: Last year was just a fluke, right???

Shelly--- word.

:lmao:

Crowded to me is when you go into EPCOT and there's a line outside and winding around to go into Spaceship Earth.

That = a bad day to me.:goodvibes

May has spoiled me--- of course- I'm seen the MK so crowded it looked like a sea of people moving in tandem, so...... I guess it's all relative.
