Can you put an oral thermometer under the arm?

Also what is the rule for piggybacking Motrin with Tylenol?

DS has a high fever and we ran out of Thermoscan ear things and the oral thermometer is making him mad trying to keep it in his mouth.

This kid has never had the flu so I am a little out of sorts on what to do here.

I have always heard alternate Motrin and Tylenol every 3 hours. You have to add a degree when you do an axillary temp.
I always give mine a luke warm bath to help keep temp down too.
Good luck!

Yep, exactly what momof3disneyholics said. Alternate motrin/tylenol every 3 hours if fever is higher than 102. If you take temp under the arm, add 1 degree to get accurate temp.

I know how you feel....it's so scary when our kids get a fever. Just hate them.

How old is your child? How much does he weigh? If you need to know dosage amounts, I have a chart the doctor gave me.

Thanks ladies.

Ds is almost 5 and he's about 46 pounds. :) I think I got his fever to go away temporarily, we'll see if it stays away or what.

Preshi, you can use an oral or rectal thermometer under the arm.

Axillary (armpit) temps are about one degree less than oral. Rectal temps are about one degree higher than oral.

Don't be afraid of fever. Children run higher temps than adults and handle them better. Fever is the body's way of fighting off the virus/bacteria. Make him comfortable. Help his body stay cool by dressing him lightly, giving him lots of cool drinks and toss him in the tub to play. Just don't let the water get cool so he shivers..that will raise the temp again.
