There could be a problem with Ebay (virus)

I certainly don't want to alarm people unduly but i thought it best to report. If this isn't allowed then please remove. ( i don't want to get into trouble )

To cut a long story short last night i was using Google Chrome to browse Ebay and i got a pop up from AVAST to say it had blocked a Trojan Horse.

Today whilst i was on another Disney forum i noticed on the guest services forum there were quite a few people all saying that there pc were infected.
There is now a thread running on the chat forum about how people have been infected whilst listing or just browsing Ebay yesterday and today.

I looks like i was very lucky as there are some people who are really struggling to get rid of the infection.

I for one will certainly be giving Ebay a wide berth until they have this sorted. I just wanted to let as many people know as possible.

I was on there last night and was getting hit constantly. I went on this morning because I wanted to list some clothes my DDs have outgrown (free listing weekend lol) but gave up because of the constant attacks. Luckily my DH keeps all our computers well-protected (I wouldn't have a clue lol) but I fear for anyone whose security isn't up to scratch.

Wow, how bizarre. I was annoyed when I wanted to go on and my security issued a warning and wouldn't let me open the site. I was distracted by my daughter and then forgot that I had wanted to go and check something out anyway as I had closed the page and shut down. Thank goodness for that. Has it just been in the last couple of days? It's the first I have heard of it and it would never have occurred to me that there was a problem. I just assumed it was one of those 'certificate expired' things which has happened to me before when inadvertently resetting the date on my system .....

Scary stuff.

Out of curiosity what does this virus do, I have heard of it but paid much attention.

My computer should have security I pay £2 per month for super boost from ISP. But I got a warning saying my security is out of date

We have had problems this weekend on machines browsing ebay. Wonder if this has anything to do with the Wikileaks followers threats to "bomb virus" certain sites eg Paypal, Amazon etc

I had a problem yesterday with my machine being infected, it even disabled my Microsoft secutiry package. I had to go into safe mode and use my settings from two days ago. I then did an intense scan which took 3 hours and it found a spyware file embedded in my computer. I booked a holiday yesterday so was looking at many sites, but not ebay or amazon, so don;t really know which site I got it from.

I had the problem on Saturday when listing on my son's lappy ( which has NO antivirus protection ). We got infected with the "system tool " trojan and I ended up having to close down, open in safe mode, system restore to before the infection and then load up antovirus software to deal with it. It was a total pain. I kept clear of Ebay for the rest of the weekend, which was annoying as it was free listing and I wanted to list some stuff. Hope they have sorted it out now

What it looks like is that hackers managed to implant malware and viruses into a site that supplies banner adverts to quite a lot of websites over the past week. This is why people are reporting seeing viruses supposedly coming from legitimate sites such as Ebay, Vue Cinemas, London Stock Exchange etc. - their sites aren't actually infected, it's the advert which is hosted elsewhere that was the cause.

The first I became aware of it was when my wife mentioned seeing a virus warning when she was looking at something on IMDB.com and asked me to take a look. As I work on virus protection as part of my job, I could immediately see that it was a con trying to get you to pay to get rid of viruses you didn't actually have, but I could understand how this would not be obvious to many people who'd probably panic and end up paying the scammers - it was a well crafted and sophisticated attack. And even with my experience, it took me the best part of an hour to completely rid the machine of every trace of the malware (I'd stopped it from running within a few minutes, but I like to be sure I've completely rooted it out).

The actual malware itself doesn't seem do any damage to your machine per se (apart from the attempted con), but the worst thing is that it tries to stop any legitimate virus protection software you have from running on your PC and prevents you from visiting security websites that might just help you from finding out more about how to remove it, which of course then leaves you open to more attacks.
