Theming: Why it isn't necessarily a matter of opinion (picture intensive)

PART I:

So I've noticed in recent weeks, how many people claim that Universal/IOA lack the "theming" of Disney parks...but the reason why I have to disagree is because theming is actually something you can base on fact in many ways.

I can in some ways understand the knock on Universal Studios supposed incomplete theming but it's actually intentional, you're on movie sets made to look like the real thing. Soundstages are supposed to be there, and the same "knock" could be made about Disney MGM studios

With that in mind, I want to focus more on the theming elements of IOA..which is a new standard in theme park design in many ways.

When you enter the park, you first see the massive lighthouse, then you see the port of entry, whose theming is already apparent, the port is themed to a place where you set off on your exploration to different lands. You'll also notice a very low, light sounding theme song in the background...and the amazing part is how this begins to transform around you as you walk through the Port of Entry, until you reach the end and the same theme song by this point has reached it's full sound, with an exciting crescendo as you start to see the different lands.

I love the uniqueness of the Port of Entry...it really is like a very familiar yet different type of theming, you can't just pin it on one story, picture, movie or anything

Seuss Landing is another place with great design...the goal for this section was like the Seuss books, you won't find a straight line in anything there. Universal brought palm trees bent from hurricanes to add to the theming...and the music isn't the run of the mill orchestral type...no, their composer looked through the Dr Seuss books to see what unique instruments they made out of parts you'd never use as instruments, and actually made them for the songs.

The Lost Continent has some very unique theming as well, as it combines several styles, arabian, meideval, greek, and combines them in a seamless way. This is my favorite of the themed lands in IOA, since it has some of the most incredible, ancient looking landmarks Ive ever seen in a theme park. Again, every single part of the Lost Continent has a fit and a theme, even the "carnival" style games are very customized to fit. The shops sell hand made gifts, swords and armor, sculpted dragons, custom coins, jewelry and many other things like that.

Again, the music is a blending of different cultural styles, and as you leave the Lost Continent toward Jurassic Park, you'll notice the music is getting less and less noticeable, until you barely hear one drum, then as you pass by the bridge to JP, you'll begin to slowly hear the memorable theme from the Jurassic Park movies.

The Jurassic Park island is the largest of all of the islands and there are a lot of details here as well, electric fences line the island, dinosaur sounds, and then there's the entire Discovery Center from the movie, you'll definitely feel like you're a part of the whole experience. Inside there are people tending to the eggs of dinosaurs that you can even see yourself and even occassional raptor hatchings take place. Other times you'll see a baby triceratops that truly does look real.

I absolutley love IOA! It is hands down my favorite park in Orlando. Why? Because of the attention to detail EVERYWHERE! That and it also has some of the best rides. It's an all around great park and get's my top vote any day.

We were blown away by the theming in IOA. I love the bright colours in suess Landings, our photos come out so great, cos of this.
our DD loved the park and she was 3 yrs old, in oct we are back again! :cheer2:

Thank you for those photos!!! I remember IOA being very colorful and a great place for photo opts but I guess did not remember HOW colorful and how GREAT those photo opts are!!!

I just don't get why some people say that IoA isn't themed as well as Disney...especially those who will not or have not visited US/IoA. I think the Islands are very well themed...as good as, if not better than Disney. I think Universal did an excellent job on the theming at both parks.

Chris - I totally agree with the analysis you gave for the whole theming issue.

I thought I would share a few of my pix as well.

If there is a better themed coaster than Dueling Dragons, I'd like to know where!

Seuss Landing at Christmas time. The trees make the Landing look at much more bright and colorful.

Toon Lagoon..looks good during the day but awesome at night!

Part 2 (FINALLY):

Thanks Metro West for sharing your good pics, its tough to find good pics on the web sometimes and I suck at taking pics of anything.

Ok, as we approach the final 2 islands, its interesting to note that while they're both "comic" based, they take different approaches in theming. Of course one is action/adventure comic book, and the other is humorous Comic Strips.

Toon Lagoon is where we find the favorites from the Sunday newspaper and other areas, and there's a LOT of them, Heathcliff, Hagar the Horrible, Blondie and Dagwood, Marmaduke, Popeye, Rocky and Bullwinkle, and many others.

This is THE wet place in Islands of Adventure, hosting 2 very wet rides and everywhere on the island it seems like theres a way to get wet, even off the rides.

Here, Hagar the Horrible is sailing on a cascading waterfall to the guests below:

Another cool and unique idea is the photo-op places here, such as this one where you have to turn the camera to get the effect right:

Universal even found a way to poke fun at themselves, with this Popeye statue that is similar to the more serious looking sailor statue outside of Jaws:

The last island, and probably one of the most popular islands is Marvel Super Hero Island. It's definitely the most visible landmark island of all of Universal, with Dr. Doom's towering fear machines and Dr. Banner's experimental device looming over the front of the island.

This is home to the Hulk, Spiderman, X-Men, the Fantastic Four, and villains like Dr. Doom. This island takes a much different approach from it's comic origin, using very large 2-D versions of characters on the sides of buildings. The buildings themselves are quite unique and are different enough to let you realize this isn't a regular city in the real world, it's definitely more exciting. They are bright and colorful and some even seem to change color at different angles.

Music is a big part of this island also, but it's also very much like the area should be, with pounding rock music and techno that adds energy to the island with the rest of the activity of Hulk and Dr Doom, and the hero parade that happens several times per day.

So there it is, a very brief look at the theming of IOA. Unfortunately this only covers a very small part of what makes IOA theming so incredible, there's so many details, sounds, pictures, hidden gems that just wouldn't fit into this post.

Also, I highly reccomend picking up the IOA soundtrack CD if it's available, as the music of each island is well worth listening to.

Thank you so much for the pic's and info. We will be visiting for the first time, spending 2 days of our Sept/Oct WDW vacation at US & IOA. This was a great insight to what IOA is all about. As much as we love Disney we can't wait to try something new. It would be great if you had the time to do a similar thread on US as well.
Thanks again, Melissa :thumbsup2

:thumbsup2 These are such beautiful pictures! We are going next spring and I can't wait for DD to wake up to see these pics! I am going to miss DW oh so very much :sad1: , but these pics have made me kinda excited to go to IOA! Keep 'em coming!

Thank you everyone for sharing you pictures. I haven't been over to Universal in about 14 years and now I am so excited to go. From everyones pictures I see there have been vast changes and there does appear to be extensive theming now. Cool!

These pics are getting me depressed. :guilty:

I just got back a week ago and want to go again. I tried talking my husband into going at Xmas and he just laughed at me.

Great pics. I think I will bookmark this thread so when the snow is flying, I'll be able to daydream. :)

Here are a few other pix but I will more when I head over this weekend. Hope you enjoy! :thumbsup2

Thanks for putting all of those pics together. I'm a complete and total Disney Nut, but the family is really looking forward to our first trip to IOA this August. And I have to agree that the theming really looks great. Guess I better bring along the laptop to download all those pictures I'm going to be taking!

Can't wait for our Aug. trip and the chance to spend some "quality" time there!!!

We just got back from 6 nights/5 days and it was our first trip to Universal Studios Orlando. I thought the theming was fantastic!!! Each "land" was exceptional from the landscaping to the carvings, decorations, CM wardrobes, etc. I was amazed the whole time. I did not once compare it to Disney because I knew I was not at Disney - however looking over my digital photos, it is probably a tie!!!
