We take our first cruise on the fantasy in September to the Eastern Caribbean my DH and I. Was wondering what everyone does on port days with their valuables such as but not limited to phones, Credit Cards, passport, Id's while they are swimming or in the water on an excursion? At home going to the beach we just do not take these type of items with us but I do not see how we can not take these items when in port. I would love to hear what you all do with your valuables and any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

We left passports on-board.

My husband put ID's and Key to the World cards in the pocket of his swim trunks, along with cash.
All of that stuff can get wet without a problem.

My beach bag had sunscreen, etc. There was nothing in it that I was too worried about getting stolen. I guess my phone was there, but evidently I'm not too big of a worrier.

for beach days in the caribbean, we don't take our passports ashore with us.
  • Phone - no, why!?
  • Camera - the waterproof one
  • Credit cards and Photo ID & Cash - A "Watertight Box Lanyard" - Best investment we made on our first DCL cruise in 1999. The box is about big enough to hold a pack of cigarettes, so it holds all of our photo id, KTTW cards and credit/debit cards. and it stays with us at all times - someone wears it around their neck.

If we have other "valuable" stuff, one of us will sit with it while the others are off in the water, then we switch off. (but this does not happen very often at all)

And on Castaway Cay - if you can afford a DCL cruise, you nor your kids need to take my stuff!!

I feel like my passport is too valuable to walk around with so that's in the safe. I make a photo copy just in case. We have a drivers licence because you need some kind of ID plus your KTTW card to get back on the ship. We bring a little cash if we're at port. Castaway cay you can charge everything back to your room. The only valuable thing I have is my cellphone and I leave it in my bag and hope for the best.

I kept our keys, id and a little cash in one of these:

I kept it around my neck and was able to fit it in my top without any discomfort.

I had a waterproof camera, which was always with one of us.

Passports and phones all stayed on the ship.

Anything else was towels, sunscreen and water in our backpack. If the backpack walked away, I'd be more upset about losing the backpack than any of the contents. Remember, you're only out for a few hours.

Now, if you 'must have' your phone with you, you can get a waterproof case for it. Some are even clear enough to take photos through the plastic. I got this one, but didn't need to use it. It is waterproof, though.

I use a Pelican waterproof case. They come in all shapes and sizes and the one I have can hold several key cards (mine, DW and DS), credit cards, drivers license etc. When we are in the water it is small enough to fit into one of my swimsuit's pockets; just make sure the pocket can button tight, don't want it getting out and float away. I have a suit that doesn't have a large enough pocket; the case has a lanyard long enough to put around my neck. Our drivers license is our official picture ID to get back on the ship, but if you have to use your passport the case I have will not be big enough for it to fit inside. For excursions involving water we do not bring our cell phones along, they stay on-board in the safe.

Oh you have all been so helpful! Thank you! Does anyone have any experience with the KYSS bag and just leaving it all onshore unsupervised? I apparently am a worrier, I would worry that we have that stuff in the water on our person and it gets out and sinks to the bottom of the ocean and we can not locate it. That would be a terrible day. But then again leaving it on shore it is then susceptible to theft. Agghhh what to do, what to do.

We sailed the Eastern on the Fantasy in December, and were specifically told that we did not need our passports in port. We got off at every port and our passports stayed in the cabin in the safe the whole time. No problem. What you must take with you is your cruise ship card (you'll get this at embarkation) and your driver's license. I kept those along with some cash (you can pay most vendors with American dollars at all of the Eastern ports) and my cell phone in a waterproof pouch around my neck, which was tucked under my clothing except when swimming, and when swimming, I kept it tucked under a swim shirt I always wear. I didn't want to carry a purse in port, and wasn't planning on doing any shopping, so it worked great.

Wow these little pouches are great. Thanks for sharing.

I had one of these for my camera:

You could put that on a waterproof case for your valuables, as well, so they float. But if you do, remember that you're pulling against the water to keep it under, if you're trying to swim. So if you put something in your pocket that wants to float, it'll pull your pocket (and pants) upward.

This is what we do, as well!

We usually leave it in our backpack and try our best to keep an eye on it. I always make sure I keep our KTTW Cards on me at all times though.

If we go to the waterparks we use a safego

Hmm, while on excursion they had lockers at the dolphin swim, when we did stingray city, we left a backpack on the boat that we took out to the sandbar, everyone left the boat so I felt confident our stuff was safe.

I haven't hung out on the beach yet while in port, so I can't comment on that.

I have the large KYSS bag and so does my sister. We use them all the time! Local water parks, beach, cruises, and just as a general bag even when we know we won't need the locking aspect of the bag. It is a great size to hold all of our stuff for a day (we each have a daughter so we have lost of "stuff" when going somewhere). Just use the chain to wrap around a chair or a couple couple chairs. Keep in mind what you are securing it to- at the local beach I make sure to secure it to multiple chairs because the chairs are small and someone could just walk away with my bag and beach chair. The bags are cut resistant- not cut proof. If someone sits there and has all the time in the world to try to get into your bag they probably will find a way in. BUT most of the time someone is just looking for a quick score and will leave it alone if it isn't an easy "grab and go".

I have the KYSS bag or similar bag on my wishlist on Amazon. I feel like if you want my stuff that badly you're going to have to take the chair and trust me, the chair is probably worth more. They're very reasonable and something you can use back home as well (pool waterpark etc)

I encourage you to look up Aquapac on Amazon. I have a couple different pacs and have used them very successfully swimming in the ocean on several 2-week trips to Hawaii, at waterparks, resorts, DW, DL and DCL. I wear them around my neck on the cord they come with and tuck it under my swimshirt.

Worth every single penny!

Have fun!
