The Walking Thread

Hello! I walked 6.18 miles this morning. It was dark and overcast, meaning sunrise wasn't worth the stop for pictures. In fact, the only pic I did take was of me in the driveway, pleased that I remembered to bring my rain jacket. I didn't need it until the last mile and a half. It wasn't heavy rain, but enough that I would have been really damp without it. You can see the water beading up on my hood brim.

I actually cut my walk short a little so I could start assessing things for the upcoming winter weather. Assuming we have power, it's looking like Sunday may end up being a day on the walking pad and a break from the real gym. I'm getting pretty anxious because we're well below the snow line and they're thinking freezing rain instead of sleet. With our trees, that could mean a lot of ice bringing down limbs...which could also mean power outages. Really hoping this isn't awful. As it is, this area does not do well with hard freeze events and really cannot handle ice.

Hello...another day of walking in the books. I went 6.1 miles this morning. I actually planned a little bit more but...
1. it's really damp out there from some overnight fog, which makes our trails slick. I tweaked my right calf a little when catching myself in a slick spot.
2. in the final stretch, when I have the decision to add in some streets near my house to boost mileage, I was approached by a loose dog. Thankfully, he was friendly, but he followed me for a bit and had the tendency to jump. It was a male yellow lab mix, probably around 60 pounds and maybe still a puppy based on the looks of things. In any event, I couldn't maintain pace around him and I needed to watch out in case he jumped again. He got distracted and went off in search of something but I got pics and posted it on our community page.

Only picture today (not counting the ones of the dog) is a fuzzy one of a heron. It was still pretty dark outside and I wasn’t still.

The bird is cool. I hope the dog made it home OK!

I've been chased every now and again by dogs when I'm riding my bike. It's so immediately scary at the start because you just don't know if they're friendly or not, but it's always been a decent encounter. At least I've never been bitten.

Love your updates and hoping you maintain your drive to continue! :)

I've carried various things over the years to try and protect myself from aggressive dogs, but lately all I've been carrying is a siren...that isn't very loud. I used to carry a golf club, but that's a lot to be lugging around. I've also carried pepper spray and even a stun gun, but I'm so afraid of discharging them on myself just over user error or poor handling after I start to get fatigued. He looks like a sweet dog, but you just never know. I'm now seeing his ribs in that one pic, so maybe he is a stray. He just didn't seem dirty and the slight build seemed more to be from a puppy still growing into his body. Hopefully someone gets him to safety.

Thank you!!! 😊

Joining in on the Walking thread. I finally got into a walking routine about 3 years ago after I had Covid and knew I was going to WDW 6 weeks later and needed to get a bit of stamina back in my lungs. I started slow at only 1-1.5 miles, but kept increasing until I was in the 3-4 mile walk per day groove. I am a bit off that the last 6 months due to having to move my mom to a facility and needing to visit her each day, but hoping to get better about the longer distances. Some days I only get my exercise ring on my watch closed, but others I exceed it by a lot. I have been trying to do both a morning walk (on a break at work) and then an afternoon/evening walk each day as it helps with the minutes for me. I am lucky to live in CA so it is nice walking weather most of the year.

Welcome!!! ☺️

I remember a few WDW trips where I hadn't been walking enough leading up to it and I couldn't handle the parks. So, even more reason to stay on top of regular walks. I've never done the ring on my phone but I know some people find it really helpful to push themselves a bit further...i.e. so they close the ring. I also like the twice a day approach. I guess my elliptical time most evenings covers that concept. Not sure what part of CA but I was happy with the number of trails I found when we were there over this past summer. The weather was great most days too!

I find if I stay on top of my walking that I am really not too tired after a long Disney day. I am in Southern CA (Orange County) and the weather is nice most of time. During the summer, I will often delay afternoon walks until after dinner to let it cool off a bit on hot days.

That's the area we've played in for the last couple of summers. Well, at least a portion of our summer travel. Of course, it's a large county/area but Bill Barber in Irvine (although right on the edge of Tustin), Great Park in Irvine, Fountain Valley, Huntington Beach Central Park, and some fields (Yorba Park, maybe?) that are technically Anaheim (but a million miles away from DLR) that are on the edge of Yorba Linda are where we've played. I found a number of great walking spots around the parks. Aside from one foggy morning with a lot of mist, the weather was always perfection!
