Trip Report Day 5 June 11

‘Star Wars Weekend at MGM!!’

Hello and welcome to another installment of ‘why won’t the baby stay in her stroller!’ Our cast in case you’re just tuning in is me – still not yet 30, DH already 30 (hehe), DS 4 soon to be 5 and DD 11 months.

We all wake up very easily today. It’s Star Wars day today! When I first planned this trip, I did not realize that there was even such a thing as a Star Wars Weekend. When I found it on allears.net, I immediately emailed it to DH and we were so excited! We got there very early today since I read on the boards that sometimes you get let in early and I didn’t want to miss the stormtroopers that would be at the entrance. They were pretty funny! Also, while we were waiting to get in, Darth Tater came out for some pictures! DS was second in line for pictures, but after so many adults cut in front of us, I think we were about 5th. A special thanks to the CM who finally made the adults pay attention and go stand in line with the kids, too! (WTH??) They did let us in early, but once again only to let us go in a ways and then be blocked off with ropes. The rope dropping was once again just on time. We headed straight over to Star Tours hoping to be able to get on without having to get a fastpass. The wait time said 5 minutes so we walked right on. They were very, very nice about doing the baby swap. Along with Peter Pan (DD was just asleep, it wasn’t too scary), this ranked as one of the best. They had a place for me to sit, the CM was very nice about explaining how it would work to DH and to myself. He even told my DS what would happen. How cool was that! Since DS had been so brave all week, I wasn’t really worried about how he would handle this. We just told him that it was all a movie, so if it got too intense, just close your eyes. DH and DS went first. When the doors opened and I walked in to take DH’s place, DS was so excited! ‘Mommy, mommy, you have to buckle yourself in, this is so cool’…he went on and on talking a mile a minute. I was laughing and so happy that he liked it. We did a quick handoff of the baby and the diaperbag before the CM even got to us. Wow, you guys are smooth, he told us. When DS and I rode it together, I got a commentary the whole time. DS had to tell me all about it and not to be scared that this was fun. I got a big kick out of that. Afterwards was what we were really looking forward to. Shopping for Star Wars crap, I mean valuable items! The Star Wars store was packed. It was very hard to get around, but for once, I was not going to leave the crowd. I normally won’t shop under these conditions…We bought all kinds of stuff including t-shirts, Darth Vader toys, a puzzle, a new light saver (as he calls it) for DS, Darth Tater, and the ultimate find – the Darth Vader motion bank. Ah, we’re such Star Wars geeks. The Darth Maul bank is the centerpiece to our dresser in our bedroom and DH and I were thrilled to have Darth Vader so they can be next to each other. How we were going to get it home on the plane was another matter, but who cares! We spent almost $100 here – which is a lot for us usual tightwads. And it all got shipped to the hotel except for the light saver. Of course, that had to stay with us.

When that was over, we headed over to the Jedi Training Academy. I didn’t think DS would do this. Remember Crystal Palace? I thought this would be too much and that he may shut down. Well, at first he was all about it. I did the trick where we waited for a show to end and pushed to the front. All was well until the Regis and Kathy aliens came out and started talking. Things were way too loud. So loud that DH had to take DD away from there and walk her around. The crowds got worse and people started pushing. Kids were edging there way to the rope and were trying to get DS’s rope spot. I told him to hold on to the rope so he wouldn’t get pushed back. About right here, I think this was about the time some higher power was reminding me that I am not supposed to be the pushy mom type because DS was like, I don’t want to do this anymore! What? We’ve been waiting 20 minutes and you decide now? I look around and remind myself that this isn’t me, I always back away from this pushy kind of stuff. And, it isn’t my son. He doesn’t like this kind of pressure. So, we try very hard to get through the crowds to get out of there. Lesson learned, good reminder for me…We walk around and see some of the characters signing autographs. We don’t wait in any lines. Just seeing them is cool enough for us. Since there isn’t a whole lot we can do with the baby, we head on over to the rest of the park. I know we didn’t get a ton done, Star Wars wise, but just being there and seeing the atmosphere and the characters was great for us.

Next up was the Muppets. DD had fallen asleep, so I sat this one out since I had seen it before. DS went in with DH and the baby and I stayed parked in the stroller parking area. I hated to be in there since so many people were coming in and out, but it was raining and there weren’t a lot of other areas I could take her right in that area. They liked the show. Afterwards it was almost 11 and we were right by Pizza Planet where we were planning on eating lunch. We saw people inside and went on in. People were standing in line even though the place wasn’t open yet! Hmmm, okay, we can do that. DH gets in line and the kids and I go upstairs to get a table. We thought the pizzas were pretty good and us gamers always love an arcade! (I told you we were geeks) Before we left, we got a couple of games in. We headed over to Playhouse Disney, but unfortunately, the next show wasn’t until 1:00 and we were wearing out fast. You could really tell today that we as a group were starting to get tired. The sun had come out full force and it was pretty hot. We decided that we didn’t think we would make it until the next show. DS really wanted to see the Incredibles characters, but we found out that you had to go through the Animation show to see them. There was a wait and we just didn’t feel up to it, so we decided to head on back to the hotel for our nap. The kids conked out easily today.

By the time we woke up, we did not have enough time to head back to MGM. We had a 5:00 reservation at O’Hanas. We were excited about going here! Since our transportation had been so efficient so far, we were a little later than usual heading out to the Polynesian. Big mistake since this time it took awhile for a bus to come! And, the monorails were full, so we had to let one go by before getting on one! Oops…We made it there at 5:10 and were seated by about 5:20. Not too bad considering it was our fault for being late. We ordered that lapu lapu drink in the pineapple. We had never had one before and wanted one just so we could say we did it! DS didn’t understand why he couldn’t taste any (can you tell we don’t drink much?). Sorry, Lance, no can do! We all loved this meal and the pineapple at the end was to die for. I could have had a plate all to myself. Who wants to share that? DS had fun with the coconut race. When we got up there all the coconuts were gone. I was so afraid he would have a major meltdown, but the CM was very nice and gave him one as soon as the first kid finished and DS got to do ‘his own race’. She played it up nicely so he wouldn’t feel bad. We had a great time. Oh, by the way, DH had to hold the baby most of the time at this place, too.

We were in such a good mood when we left, we got a little too cocky I guess and actually thought the kids might be able to handle some shopping at Downtown Disney for awhile. Now I know I didn’t have too much of that lapu lapu, but what the heck were we thinking? :sad2: While I normally am the great planner, I do try to allow for some spontaneity, but it was too close to their bedtimes and on a SATURDAY NIGHT! Ugh, major brainfart on our parts here. Too save you the pain of the evening, I’ll just sum up with, DS has a meltdown when we get there and pretty much only grunts at me for at least an hour, DD decides she has had enough and we have the fun job of holding her and pushing a stroller in the most maddening shopping crowds I have seen in ages (considering how much I hate shopping in any sort of crowd). You would think there was some huge sale going on, not the expensive Disney items that had people pushing their way through stores and aisles! :crowded: We didn’t make it even 30 minutes there – long enough for DH to buy some artwork that he wanted from the art of Disney and we were out of there!

The bus ride allowed us some time to reflect on the error of our ways and our moment of stupidity. The cool thing here was we met a really nice family on the bus on the way home. We enjoyed talking to them and getting to know them. They told us all about their home town in Idaho and now we totally want to move up to Idaho since our desire to move to Canada is probably a little too unrealistic!

After that, we were the bad parents, skipped the baths for tonight – they didn’t sweat too much today, did they? No, we say! And we head straight for bed looking forward to our last day tomorrow.

Coming up next – Finally, a day without rain, some swimming time, and our last dinner in the World!
