The What's For Dinner Thread - May '09(recipe index in OP)

DH went to the store with my list. He called to ask what radishes were. I explained what they looked like - I know he knows what they are, just not computing in his mind. I go to pull them out for dinner and he got 4 heads of purple cabbage :rotfl: What am I supposed to do with it? :confused3 Can recipe suggestions? I would hate to waste it.

:rotfl:

seriously, sometimes I think husbands do stuff like this so we won't send them to the store any more! You could make a big batch of sweet and sour cabbage and can it? It's good with latkes and sausages.

Keeping Sheryl in my thoughts! I hope all went well. Kathy, keep us posted!

Maria, some Bermuda ideas: Church Bay for snorkeling, Warwick Long Bay for swimming, Horseshoe Bay for swimming on a beach with amenities. I don't recommend renting a scooter. After a couple of incidents, we use the bus to get around. The #7 bus goes up the road with all of the good beaches on it. I also really like the Maritime Museum. Gibbs Hill Lighthouse if you are feeling up to it--you can walk to the top and there are amazing views. If you are into perfume, Bermuda has a perfurmery and orchid garden that you can tour. If you want more ideas, let me know and I will pm you. I assume you are taking your meals on the ship, right?

OK, time for more photo catch up. Here is the stuff I have been cooking lately. From Tanglewood (I didnt post these yet, did I??)

Kathy- the surgery may take 3 hours but it may have been delayed. Marisa went in over an hour late. Then she had recovery. I'd give it a while longer, she may be in recovery and Bob has not heard from the Dr yet. I hate waiting!!!!!!!!!!!

Maria- call the Dr, I can hear Marisa bellowing "ROAD TRIP" if you do not!

Glynis- sorry about the unruly kids. I do get the wait for good seats thing....I am one of those too. I remember when one of the Star Wars pictures was opening.....I had the kids and we waited a looooooog time!

Just spoke with Bob, Sheryl's doing great! She's in her room eating ice chips. Bob said to thank everyone for their prayers and support.:thumbsup2

Kathy, he might be in recovery with her, sometimes that whole process takes a long time. I remember when I went in with John for a simple hernia surgery, the surgery itself took a couple of hours from when they took him back for prep to when he came to recovery, and the time in recovery was just as long, maybe longer. They had to wait for the anesthetic to wear off, and get him rehydrated. It pretty much took all day, and I did not have a cell signal, as recovery was in one of the underground areas of the hospital.

Final catch up, here is food from home. Last night I made grilled chicken ceasar salad:

The night before we had BLTs with avocado and egg on them:

Friday we had grilled shrimp, peas from the farmer's market, and salad:

and pomegranate martinis

Thursday we had cod roasted with grape tomatoes and olives, and slow cooked broccoli

There! All caught up.

MARIA-At first I was but I got the hang of it after awhile, the circles were a bit tricky but it was alot of fun.

We also went parasailing, it was so beautiful up there, that was alot of fun. It was alittle different then the regular canvas harnas. They were like a seat for 2 almost like on a ferris wheel. We went with other couples from the cruise.

YAAAA:cheer2: :grouphug: Glad you made it through Sheryl. Now you just need patience while you recoop.

Kathy- Thanks for keeping us posted, wishing Sheryl a speedy (as can be) recovery.

Maria- I went to bermuda when I was 7 so I don't remember much. I loved a glass bottom boat ride, I wasn't old enough to snorkel so that was pretty neat. I also remember caverns, but I don't remember what made them special, but I think they are pretty neat in general. I know we loved the cruise, but I don't remember specifics. Whenever I see green and pink together I think of bermuda.

Thinking of all of you, so many are going through so much and I wish you all the best. I miss hanging out with you guys on a regular basis.

We booked this morning for the Bay lake towers in February. I'm really excited. My parents have some extra points to use up but I though it would be all booked and we'd stay somewhere else. I've never stayed anywhere with a monorail.

Dinner tonight is ribeyes, sweet potato fries and a veg.

I'm really looking forward to the pink beaches!

YEAH for BLT!!!! From what I've read the rooms & views will be amazing!

Lauren -- You have enough to do right now...don't worry about finding out about Germany for me! Greg has spoken to several people who have been stationed there, and they have all said it is great. He is pretty excited.

DH went to the store with my list. He called to ask what radishes were. I explained what they looked like - I know he knows what they are, just not computing in his mind. I go to pull them out for dinner and he got 4 heads of purple cabbage :rotfl:
 Four heads? Wow, didn't he wonder what you would be needing all that cabbage for??

I find myself making very simple dishes that can be prepared quickly.

I'm sure your family is happy you are able to make anything! You need to give yourself a break and be okay with not being able to accomplish everything right now.

Marisa -- I hope Kady is feeling better today.

Nancy -- Poor Nola. I hope that sweet baby feels better soon.

Robin -- That is exciting about Bay Lake Towers! I don't know that I will ever get to stay there, so I'll have to live vicariously through those of you who do.

Kathy -- Thanks for the update on Sheryl! My thoughts are with her.

Greg leaves Sunday for Germany, so I am leaving the menu choices to him, if he wants. I haven't had the chance to talk to him about dinner yet today though because I was with Caili at skating, and he has been busy packing. We'll see what he comes up with...I'm guessing it won't be cheese plate! ;)

Slowly but surely getting caught back up. I had a Drs. appointment yesterday - all day. Tonight we are going to our County fair, Friday we have a wedding to go to (out of town - all weekend) and Sunday we have to hurry home as Ethan and I are going to Church Camp till Monday. Busy, busy, busy. As of next Tuesday things will settle down and hopefully be back to normal. At least normal for me. :rotfl2:

I haven't even had a minute to try to read back but please know you are all in my thoughts daily.

WFDT ~ Grilled Chicken burgers with a homemade pesto spread, corn on the cob and a green salad.

Make it a great day my friends.

I haven't even had a minute to try to read back but please know you are all in my thoughts daily.

So you're posting and not reading, and I'm reading but forgetting to post. :confused3

I can't even remember now everything that I wanted to say. :headache:

I know there's a lot of pain in this thread right now, so :grouphug: and pixiedust: to just about everybody. I'll try to get better about actually posting to this thread!

I have now got ALL my ADR's sorted...good times !! :cheer2:

Nola is sick  so we are in an uproar here. We just got back from the Dr, she has a bad cold and a sore throat. It is not in her ears yet, thank God! but her nose is running like a faucet. Kady went through a box of tissues on the ride to the Dr and is thoroughly grossed out :scared: Buddy had it too, was fine for two weeks and had it again. Her Dad had this and is now relapsing, it was terrible. He is worse than Buddy when it comes to just staying on the couch and he was there for 5 days. I hope this baby is nt that bad, poor Angel

Poor Nola and poor Nancy. Although you did have me laughing at Kady with the kleenex. I'm sure she's scarred for life. ;)

Calling the doctor this afternoon, my patience is about a 0 at this point.

I'm sure it is. Hopefully you'll get an answer today.

Ding, ding, ding!!!!! I think we have a winner. I'm almost positive that is why Kenny does it - to make sure I don't ask him again. About the only thing I can count on him to pick up and it be correct is ice cream. Can you tell who likes the ice cream in our house? :rolleyes1

Thanks for keeping us posted. Glad to know she's done and it went well.

We miss you too but understand you're busy.

:rotfl: Probably not. Are you and the children planning a visit to Germany?

I know the feeling. I'm not sure what normal really is anymore.

Tonight's dinner is maple glazed chicken with broccoli and cauliflower. I haven't been to the gym in over a month but I'm trying to get there tonight. Maybe that will improve my mood.

Kat- thanks for the update, I am so glad that Sheryl is okay!

Robin- don't worry about posting, stop in when you can :thumbsup2 You are going to love a monorail resort! My dh loved the CR, it is his favorite Disney resort

Bethany- you make me chuckle! Sheryl told me how much fun the two of you had shopping, I would have loved to be there

Gretchen- if you think Kady was scarred before....you may want to talk to her now :rotfl: She is really very sweet and she knows that Nola loves her so she came over to snuggle a little and play Patty Cake. Well Nola kept going to hug her and she has those big open mouth baby kiss type hugs.....so imagine Kady as Nola reached her and then a big sneeze or a "bubble" got in the way. Kady was :scared: She knows that Nola gets her feeling hurt now so she couldn't  Boy, she perfected the back away gracefully but really fast thing :rotfl2:She then suggested we not wait to give her a vapo-bath ;)

I feel badly for her Mom. She knows that I take good care of her but feels guilty that she is working and not home.Marisa walks that line too and it is harder for Mom than it is for Nola or Kady.

Dinner id official, I am calling Buddy to pick up any bread he wants, he can have sandwiches :thumbsup2 I won;t even make him eat the high fiber whole grain bread I have been giving him for lunch.

Gretchen- I meant to ask how you Dad is doing with his meals. I keep trying to come up with food but end up with pudding and mashed potatoes and gravy

ETA- have you tried milk shakes? I used to make Buddy's dad milk shakes and beef them up with Carnation Breakfast but now there are so many good protein powders that are so good the nutrition is way better than what I could make. I got some good mixes at the health food store when Erica was not able to eat solid food.

Vickie- Tonight we are having frozen sweet potaoe fries, so I just dump them on a baking sheet. I found the other recipe for you though, it was easier to find it here then to go searching through my own collection- thank's Kathy for making it so easy.

Spicy Sweet Potato Sticks
5 sweet potaoes, cut in sticks, tossed in orange juice (just a bit)
1 teaspoon coriander
1/2 teaspoon fennel seeds
1/2 teaspoon oregano
1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup oil

Grind spices. Drain excess orange juice. Toss potatoes with spices and oil. Bake at 425F/220C/gas mark 7 for 20 minutes. Then stir. Cook until tender, stirring every 15 minutes.

I don't have a spice grinder, so I use a meat mallet or morter and pestle. I also microwave the potatoes for a few minutes, just to soften them, not cook them at all. They are pretty hard to cut and I value my fingers.

Laura- The only reason we are able to stay there is because of my parents extra vacation club points. I'm pretty sure they overbought for a reason. We do spend part of the time at Fort Wilderness, and I love that too.

Nancy- I've honestly never liked the contemporary, but since it's the only one with DVC I'll get over how ugly it is. Not to fond of the grand floridian either though, guess I'm just a country girl. I am really excited about the monorail though, mainly for my husband. He's been disney deprived up until we go married so it's like watching a little kid at disney everytime we go. I'm secretly glad he had never been so I could see him see disney for the first time.

Gretchen- Like Nancy said with the carnation instant breakfast, my aunt had slimfast for the nutrients mixed with ice cream for the calories.

I am glad that Sheryl is doing OK!

Ding, ding, ding!!!!! I think we have a winner. I'm almost positive that is why Kenny does it - to make sure I don't ask him again. About the only thing I can count on him to pick up and it be correct is ice cream. Can you tell who likes the ice cream in our house? :rolleyes1.

It's true! It is definitely sabotage. Have I ever told the story of when I asked John to clean the bathroom? He agreed, but cleaned the ENTIRE THING with paper towels, which he continually FLUSHED DOWN THE TOILET!! Eventually he created a huge clog and the toilet overflowed so badly that water came down through two floors and completely stained the ceiling! The ceiling ended up having to be repainted, and the carpet had to be pulled up. I think he expected to get out of further bathroom duties by using up so many paper towels, but he definitely did not plan on destroying our house!! We have a cleaning lady now, so it worked out in the end for both of us. ;)

Spicy Sweet Potato Sticks
Those sound really good! I like the spice combination.

WFD: something with portobello mushrooms. I need to use them up but can't think of anything to make.

:lmao: Bless that child! That's tough duty.

Thanks for the advice. Right now about the only things we have been able to get him to eat/drink are shakes (with the Carnation), mashed potatoes (NO salt), cream of wheat, and low sodium chicken noodle soup (rinsed so all he is really getting are the noodles and the chicken and veggies - all of the broth is washed away because he says the salts burns him up). Honestly though he is eating very little. Can't really blame him with those blisters/ulcers but it worries us.

Chemo is horrible and it is so hard to watch him go through all of this. He has become so frail and dependent, not at all like the man he has been. He hasn't mentioned it, but I know his pride has taken a beating too. He has always been so private and so proud, but I think cancer takes your dignity first.

:scared1: Holy Cow! No, you've never shared that story. I would have certainly remembered that one. I'm glad for both of you that you have a cleaning lady, but it sure was expensive getting there! I would say that the new carpeting was a plus too, but after my drawn out experience with getting my floor repaired/replaced, I don't know if it is a plus or not.
