The What's for Dinner Thread - August 2014 (recipe index in OP)

Welcome to the new posters. We love having you with us.

Divah ~ Your pulled pork sounds amazing. I love my crockpot, so if you need some new recipes let me know.

YOYO ~ Upside down lasagna sounds very interesting. Care to share?

PIO ~ Sorry about FB, but to be truthful I wondered how you got away with that.

Brandi ~ I love brussel sprouts. I love to roast them - completely changes the taste.

Well I am finished with my first week - Fast 5 - and I have lost 6 pounds and 1" from my waist. Today I start the plan. I am ready for a bit more food. This last week was hard, but I did it and got the results they promised. I can already tell the difference.

Bloodmobile is here today. I just dread this day - I don't know why they have to be so rude. After all, we bend over backwards for them and they are very ungrateful people. I have even complained about them to Headquarters with no change. I don't understand why they always look down to me. Oh well, I am staying in my office and if I don't go out I don't have to deal with the rude nurses. Just makes for a VERY long day.

Beautiful morning today - sure wish I was home. Suppose to be in the 70's today. I think after lunch I will go for a walk. Yep, that's what I will do. :yay:

WFDT ~ Thin crust pizza with lots of toppings, spinach salad with pecans and strawberries, roasted asparagus. I even get dessert tonight. :rolleyes1

Make it a great day!!

I stopped organizing blood drives a couple of years ago. I can't give blood, I have been places that they don't like, and I have had liver problems in the past and both of those take me off the list. They always looked and acted like I did it on purpose so I did not have to give, so I stopped organizing for them. Never understood the need for rudeness.

Hope you have a great day and enjoy the walk outside.

Congrats on the 6 pounds and the inch around the waist. The is wonderful progress, and enjoy that dessert.

Ellen - I am so envious! Great job. I'm still hovering right where I've been. Maybe a few pounds lower than a couple months ago, but nothing significant. Every time I seem to go down that "friend" shows up and gain water weight. The fondue the other night didn't help either. Nutisystem sounds interesting. I just don't think I could stick to something like that. Sorry about the nasty nurses.

Brandi - I can't donate either. My veins are too small. The time I tried they couldn't even get a full pint out of me. I avoid those places now as I hate the idea of even taking a blood test.

PIO - I emailed you before I read what you posted here. That's explanation enough. I too wondered how they let you get away with it for so long. I hope you take Brandi's suggestions and just make up a name. You could be Marie Long. I won't tell them she died 9 years ago.

Divah - I seem to be welcoming you all over the place. Sorry about all the challenges you are facing, but it sounds like you are facing them well and tackling them nicely.

WFD?? Don't know. We have band tonight so I have to think of something on the program that I can get at a fast food place. Wendy's works best, but Pollo Loco is good too. Last night we had chef's salads minus the HB egg.

I have friends that opened an account using a fake name, as long as it is seems legit, how would they know.
I mean how would they know if you name was not Jane Oz, or Mary Australia.

I have to work out what persona I want to share on FB. Once I figure that out, I'm pretty sure the name will sort itself out. Truth be known, FB did me a favour. I was getting to the point where I needed to change the persona up a little and clean up a couple of things on that account. This way, I get to start afresh.

I hope to have it all thought out by the weekend.

YoYoA - Upside down lasagna sounds amazing and exactly the sort of thing that might be perfect for Australia. I'd be interested in the recipe too. :upsidedow

Ellen - WooHoo! Congrats on the weight loss. That's amazing results. Keep at it. I am also surprised that it took this long for FB to catch up with me. Oh well. If you get the chance, just let some of the others know.

Divah - Sorry about the MS. If you don't mind me asking....How old is your DS?

Brandi - That spinach ravioli meal sounds good too. But I'm also avoiding pasta.

Alison - Hope band night went well! ;)

Tonight is Wednesday night so it was dinner at mum's. I couldn't resist and ended up having some basmati rice with the curries and stir fries tonight. My progress is very slow. I have had a few people notice that I look a bit thinner in the face. My scales don't show much difference but I think I can feel a small difference in my clothes. I'll keep at it and be good.
Today was hard. I had the case of the munchies at 2 pm. And there's a supermarket and a food court right at the ground level of the building I work in. I had to walk past the cake shop and the cookie shop to the supermarket. I picked up a punnet of strawberries and then had to walk past the bakery section of the supermarket. They were pulling out fresh baked cookies at that time and the smell was just so tantalising. I nearly caved! But I persevered and ended up munching on the strawbs. Yay me, right?

Yay you is right! Congrats on passing them by and sticking with strawberries. If you win a bunch of small battles you will win the war!

Good morning girlies,

Brandi ~ I can't donate blood either - long story. But there was a time that I needed over 15 transfusions that literally saved my life, so Doug donates for me. He feels he needs to give back - bless him!!

PIO ~ See there is an advantage of having only 19 friends on FB. I am so picky of who I friend that my nephews even aren't on my list. This way I don't have to worry about who sees what. Please let me know when you get it figured out.
Oh my you are a better person than me - I probably would have caved. Good girl!!

Alison ~ I am so dang surprised that you aren't seeing a weight change. Yes you have slipped up, but for the most part you have done really good. Are you drinking enough water? I try to drink over 100 oz. a day. I know that sounds like a lot but it is easy to do. And I can't believe the difference it makes me feel. Even during that time of the month it will really help with the water weight gain. Just a thought. But I am proud of you!!

Divah ~ Thanks for sharing with us about your MS. One of my very best friends was diagnosed with MS about 5 years ago. I would give anything if she took care of herself even 1/2 the way you take care of you. I get so worried about her. Good for you. And I agree - just because I am on NS I still love to cook and bake. I cook for Doug but the funny thing is, of course, I cook different and usually he ends up losing more weight than I do. Go figure!!

This weekend at the Friday night during his wrestling match Ethan hurt his elbow. Bless his heart he even cried on the mat. The Coaches looked at it but had him finish. Elizabeth and Jay and Linda (his other Grandma is a nurse) all looked at it and decided it was ok. I kept saying I think it needs to be looked at. No one listened to me - of course. He wrestled on Saturday and Sunday and did seem to be ok. Well when I went to pick him up this morning Elizabeth said that at practice last night that he was really complaining so they FINALLY decided to take him to the ER last night to have it looked at. YEP, he had dislocated it. They were able to get it back in with no problem. It is sore today but he says, it's so much better. So no wrestling this week or weekend.
Oh man being a Nana is so hard!!!

WFDT ~ Tomatoes, broccoli, edemame with Mac and Cheese. Doug is having a chicken breast also.

Make it a great day!!

Being a Nana is very hard work and I so understand the issues of being one.

I love edamame do you cook yours with a little salt water?

Your dinner plans sound like mine... THis is what we had and David added a chicken breast.

Last night was Kidney beans, broccoli, cucumbers, bell peppers, David added chicken breast and small potato

Alison - Hope band night went well!

It was kind of a disaster. Fran couldn't go. She has retained so much water that she couldn't get her shoes on. We tried five pairs. She put on her slippers. Her pants were so tight she could hardly move. We stayed home and she took diahertics and she pottied all night.

Yay me, right?

:thumbsup2

Are you drinking enough water? I try to drink over 100 oz. a day.

I'm drinking probably 6-7 8 Oz glasses not quite enough.

I'm honored to be one of your 19 friends Ellen.

Last night we ended up having Leek and Asparagus Soup. I had planned to make it Friday but was too tired. I moved it to Monday and I think I was still too tired so I'm glad I finally made it. We had hot dogs with it. Mine was naked with mustard, Fran had one with bread and one with just Ketchup.

The good news is I'm on the lower end of my weight hovering. I'm 5 lbs less than I was the first week in Feb. But two days ago I was almost at the Feb weight, I hate this fluctuation.. Today I'm going to be good. Not sure WFD, but it will be lo cal, lo glycemic, and look sugar.

Happy Thursday girlies,

Alison ~ That's not bad on the water - I have friends that can't or won't even drink that. But I do know that the more you drink the better you feel. And it really does help with water retention. You wouldn't think it would - the mind makes you think drinking more water would make you retain it more but it really does just the opposite.
And yes, you should feel honored. I am VERY picky with my FB friends. But you are so worth it!!!

Brandi ~ I love edamame, and no I do not add salt to the water. I don't even salt them when they come out. Never have and now if I get them out and they come salted I really don't care for them. I hardly ever use salt. There are a few things that you just have to - Eggs and tomatoes, but other than that I usually use pepper or garlic powder. I do love me my garlic!!!

Hi to everyone else ~ :flower1:

We are to reach into the 80's today and that is just WAY to hot for us this early. And there isn't a raindrop in sight. We could really use some moisture. I took Cooper for a walk last night and I saw 4 tractors in the surrounding fields. That is something you just don't see in March. This could be a long hot dry summer.

WFDT ~ Taco salads - mine will be just the lettuce, tomatoes, and onions with a bit (2 T) of the meat and hot salsa. Doug will have the works.

Make it a great day

I agree with you on Salt, when I kicked it last year, everything taste way over salted to me when I get food outside of my house! LOL

Do you make your own Garlic Powder, we do and it is so much better....

I'm so glad the week is over.

Brandi - That's a shame about the Blood Bank. I can't give blood either. I was in England during the time when they had Mad Cow Disease and because we lived there longer than the period that is acceptable as a donor. The BB here can't accept me as a candidate either. :(

Ellen - Oh no! Is Ethan okay now that he has had his elbow looked at properly and back in place? Poor kid.

Alison - How's Fran today? I hope she's better.

WFDT? Friday night means take-out night. The boys came back from swimming class and brought sushi home.

dinner tonight is black bean burgers, with lettuce wraps, tomatoes, onion, bell peppers and cucumbers.

It's a breezy Friday here on the Plains...........

Brandi ~ You have NO idea how I love garlic. I would love to know how to make my own garlic powder. I am assuming you let it dry out and then grate it? Please share with me!!

PIO ~ Yes, thanks for asking, Ethan is ok. It is/was a bit sore but felt much better once it was back where it was suppose to be. He is 10 and very resilient so he is back to normal. But I am still glad they pulled him from all practices and tournaments till next week. He is such a gentle soul and my heart just hurts when he hurts. His smile and laugh will light up a dark room!!

Alison ~ How is Fran feeling? Bless her heart and yours!! I so hope things turn a corner for the both of you here real soon. You don't have time for this, you have way to much on your plate to not feel good.

We have an unexpected weekend off now that Ethan isn't wrestling. I would love to say we are going to do something fun but we are going to clean house. It is time!!! We keep it picked up and surfaced clean but tomorrow we need to get in the corners and under everything. Doug was not to happy with my suggestion but if we work together we can knock this out by 2:00 and then we can play. He very begrudgingly agreed. We like to play on the weekends but every once in awhile you have to get some house/yard/barn work done. And this is the weekend.

WFDT ~ For Doug - Grilled cheeseburgers, sweet potato fries and strawberries with cream. Nutrisystem has the neatest beef patties so I will get to have a hamburger also with a spinach and strawberry salad.

Make it a great day and a wonderful weekend.

I peel and chop the garlic and place it in the dehydrator and let it run all day long, I now put it on the back porch, b/c the whole house smells like garlic if I leave it inside.
The I put it in my spice grinder and grind away until it is a powder. There are always some bits left, and I put them in a baggie and when we make pizza I sprinkle them over the pizza. Yummy!

The powder b/c I don't like to add things with clump if you are not careful, so try not to make a huge amount, to keep it fresh always, or add a cracker or two to the container you store it in to keep the moisture out of it.

I even put pieces of Terra cotta in mine. Tiny little saucers to absorb the moisture.

It is really that easy and you will not believe the difference in taste.

Happy Pi Day!

Thanks for asking. She is feeling awful. Plus she is back on morphine. I really hate it when she has to take morphine because it really messes with her head. She can't keep track of what going on and I really wish she wouldn't drive.

Tonight she asked me if we had dinner yet before I made it. Only three more weeks until arthritis drugs are back.

On the bright side we had fajitas for dinner. I had corn tortillas so at least it was gluten free. I still have not seen any real weight loss. I need to go to the gym by myself. I finally found my tennies. I don't have any shorts, but I can just wear Fran's and tie them tight.

Thanks! I need it! To think she is doing our accounting books for the year and wrapping them up before she goes back on the arthritis drugs is scary. I wonder how accurate the data will be or how many times she is going to have to go over them to be sure they are right, and whether they will be. Oh well. We lost so much this year, it won't matter!
