The What's For Dinner Thread - August '09(recipe index in OP)

Very sad here today, my BFF's father passed away this morning, he was only 64. :sad1:

Hey y'all,

It's a beautiful day here! The so-so grilled chicken was in salad last night with smoked paprika dressing. I still have another huge chicken breast left, I think I'll make soft tacos with mango-avocado salsa.

Glynis, I'm glad your Dad's feeling better about this & that he realizes he needs his kids help to get through it. We are keeping him in our prayers.

Laura, Wow strep & she didn't complain of sore throat! I'm glad you found out what was causing the fever & she will hopefully have a quick recovery! :flower3: Is Liam enjoying gymnastics? I am right, that's new for him this year?

Maria, Have fun tonight!
Are you planning on having Disney make that? Or putting something together? Do you know what the cost would be & can that be done right away? You don't have to call ahead for that?

Becky, Beautiful food!! Woohoo on the free airfare!!

Aimee, I'm so happy to hear Ace is doing so well!!! :goodvibes I started using the B&BW's plug ins a few months ago. I haven't noticed any flare-ups in my asthma/allergies or for Alexis. I just put new ones in yesterday, so I'll pay attention. DH has been having more sinus troubles lately?

Lauren, I wonder how many cooking phone calls you'll be getting from Tom?! :rolleyes1 That is too funny!

I probably should have waited & looked online for cheaper beading products. But I wanted to get started so I don't forget how to do it.

Hi...

Just a quick post to let you all know Ron passed his med card today. His BP was 130/86 !!!!!!!!!!!!!:banana:

Thanks for the well wishes, tips and prayers for him.

Off to read and catch up now... BBL

WFD- mush/swiss burgers, and corn.

Marylyn- I'm sorry for your friend, was it unexpected? That's how old my dad is.

Way to go Ron!! Ann, that must be a huge weight of your shoulders. It was a cute outfit at beans, but I understand your point, especially for something she could only wear a few times. I always figure money I don't spend here is money I can put towards vacation.

Aimee- I just got a wallflower refill today, I only use them once in a while but I think they say not use them near pet areas- but that's where you need them the most!

Laura- I can deal with pain pretty well, as long as it's not a sore throat. I hope she's feeling better, they are the worst.

Becky- Congratulations on the plane tickets, that's exciting. Even more exciting if you'll be able to use them.

Steak, garlic fries (trader joe's), and a yet to be determined veg for dinner.

Very sad here today, my BFF's father passed away this morning, he was only 64. :sad1:

I'm so sorry.....what terrible news:hug: How is your fried holding up?

Sheryl there are some online that I looked at & shred with Lauren.
The NJ girls just don't have room to pack goodies for the basket.

Maria - have fun at the concert!!

Laura - Strep!! Poor girl. Hopefully she’ll finally start feeling better soon.

I probably should have waited & looked online for cheaper beading products. But I wanted to get started so I don't forget how to do it.

Sheryl - my daughter gets a magazine that has beading supplies. I know she and my DIL order from them all the time. I’ll get the name of it and let you know.

Yea!!!

Very sad here today, my BFF's father passed away this morning, he was only 64. :sad1:

How nice of you to ask! :goodvibes I actually saw him Sunday for the first time since he left my house and he is doing FAB! he looooooooves my brother, and really didn't care we were there. Sniffed, greeted us, went back to my brother. He is a little whiny when my brother leaves (even if someone else is home) but he's just going through seperation anxiety which is normal for a dog in a new home that bonds with their owner. He cuddles with the cat (), is able to be off leash a lot of the time, and is sleeping on his own bed next to my brothers bed. Couldn't be better :thumbsup2

Wanted to pass on something I learned this morning - avoid those plug in scented air fresheners. You know like Glade plug ins, and B&BW Wallflowers? I put one in my entryway about 2 months ago - we've never used them before. Winston, one of my pups, has been having horrid allergies recently which I blamed on the changing seasons. DH took him to the vet this morning and she said his allergy is obviously an inhaled allergen and did we have any plug in air fresheners? Sure enough, his allergy started about 2 months ago! I did some research since he told me that and found that kids who live in homes with them have more ear infections than those who don't. And I'm sure I'm inhaling it and it's not helping my allergy/asthma any, either.

So glad that Ace is adjusting to his new home.
Who’d have thought indeed! That’s very interesting; thanks for passing that on.

Lauren – I’m chuckling over Tom and his baked potato, too funny!

Nan – Enjoy the fair food this evening!

Laura – That Caili must have a very high pain threshold, God Bless her!

Glynis – Happy to hear that Dad is in a positive frame of mind, that means so much. Prayers continue.

Maria – A wine themed basket sounds great! Take pics tonight!!!!!

Aimee – So happy to hear that Ace is doing so well!:goodvibes

Marilyn – My prayers are with you and your friend’s family.

Ann – So happy that Ron passed his med card.:thumbsup2

Lauren, let us know how Tom's first day was.

Maria, enjoy the concert with DM.

Nancy, have fun at the fair.

Laura, hope Caili is better. How is Greg doing?

Aimee, so happy Ace and DB are settling in. I will spread the word on air freshner thanks.

Robin, TJ fries sound good. I have never been there.

Kathy & Sheryl, you girls are going to be at F&W before you know it.

Lauri (Z), glad you are back and jumping right in!

Vickie, hope that tooth is better my friend!

Ellen Thanks for the PM. What kinds of things can we send? Can we send baked goods, what kind do they like? I am new at this I have no clue.:confused3

Laura I am glad you finally have an answer for the illness. I hope the meds kick in soon.

Marilyn How very sad:hug: Many prayers for your friend.

Aimee I forgot that about the plug ins. I am glad that Ace loves your brother. How funny about the cat. Hershey loves his cats too. He brings his toys over to them. He doesn't share with just anybody.:rotfl:

Ann Yeah for Ron :yay:

Lauren :rotfl2: don't they do the helpless thing so well. Make sure if something needs to be boiled you mention how much water goes in what pan. I learned the hard way that is not obvious. :rolleyes1 I lost a good pan that way.

Marilyn, I am so sorry. I send my thoughts and prayers to you, your friend and family.

Laura, Oy! strep is not fun. Usually with antibiotics they will feel better in a day or two.

Ann, Yay Ron!

Maria, Have fun tonight! I go next Friday! The Rosa basket is fine with me...we all love Rosa!!! I will do anything as long as its easy.

Aimee, Glad Ace is doing so well!

***
I will BBL, the real estate lady is coming in a few minutes.

Maria -- Have fun tonight!

Glynis -- I am glad your dad is accepting help. The more people involved to help fight, the better.

Thank you all once again for the prayers and well-wishes for Caili. I found out what is wrong. She has strep throat. The doctor could not believe she never complained about a sore throat and that she has been eating normally. She obviously has a high pain threshold, and I am going to have to be a lot more vigilant when these fevers pop up.

Anyway, we will go get the antibiotic shortly, and she should feel better in the next couple of days.

Wow! That really is a high tolerance for pain!!! I can handle anything but a sore throat! That turns me into a real baby!

My Katie has a high tolerance too. When she was 4, she got her first ear infection, and I didn't know anything about it until her eardrum burst and I saw goop oozing out of her ear. I felt like such a bad mom!

Hey ladies! No surprise, I'm behind again. No new excuses, just life getting in the way of my dis-ing. So ready for my trip in 2 weeks!

I did notice that Glynis dad didn't get great news. Prayers going out for the whole family.

Aimee--glad to hear Ace is doing so well!

Laura--hope sweet Caili is feeling better

okay, dinner is on the stove--big night of noodles and sauce. Whoopie. Will hopefully bbl!

Thanks ladies.

Marylyn- I'm sorry for your friend, was it unexpected? That's how old my dad is.

He had COPD and has been in and out of the hospital for the last couple of months. I think it was something that was in the back of everyones mind that he probably wouldn't live much longer. He went into the hospital late Sunday with pneumonia and then his kidneys shut down. They tried dialysis but every time they did his blood pressure got dangerously low.

I'm so sorry.....what terrible news:hug: How is your fried holding up?

She's holding up okay. The boys are having three differant reactions, the oldest is really torn up and went to the hospital with his mother this morning, the middle one doesn't want to talk about it or hear about it and went to school and his football game today and the little one, who is 8, just keeps asking questions.

Ok, WOW after 6 pages and an hour of reading I feel I am caught up. I always say – NEVER again – and then I fall behind again. Oh My!!

I am so very jealous of you all going to WDW here pretty soon. I tried so hard to get there but it just didn’t work out, and maybe it is for the best as I hope to be able to share some really good news with you all pretty soon. I can’t now because I don’t want to jinx it. Stay tuned.

 You sound JUST like me with trying to keep up with this thread!

Oooh! I will be staying tuned!

Thanks for the welcome backs all. I appreciate it. Things have been kind of hectic here, and I guess that since Rick started talking to people about it, I can too.......

.......we are looking at condos when we head to Orlando in a couple of weeks!
We're torn- while we love NOLA and the people and friends we have there, we've just steadily gotten tired of the ordeal of living there. So, after much heartache and indecision, we've decided to look into relocating. Orlando suburbs- Kissimee, Lake Buena Vista, Winter Garden, etc get us close to the World, shopping, downtown districts have some incredible arts, and the airport is easy for us to get in and out of town with alot of options for work...

 Good luck with whatever you decide to do. I know that decisions like that can be difficult. I know that the things that drove me so batty in NYC were things that other people loved. Every city has it's own personality, strengths, and issues. I hope you find one you like that meets your needs without driving you nuts - that's not always an easy task!

Dad has an appointment with a local oncologist tomorrow morning, and my brother is going with him. I've bombarded him with questions to ask, so hopefully, we'll get some concrete answers then. After that, I'm planning on getting my dad to come to the cancer center just north of us. It's one of the best in the country, and they have oncologists that specialize in all types of cancer.

Dad is back in a positive frame of mind, and is willing to accept that his children are going to be included in his treatment, no matter what! That took a lot of doing, but I'm glad he's realized that it's not good to try to do something like this on his own.

So did you get your snow?

Thanks for the update on your dad.

Wow! Snow! We are finally getting some cooler weather here. It was 59 by me this morning and will be sunny and in the low 80's.

I was reading through without paying too much attention to who was writing each post. I got to your weather report and was like "Wow, that sounds a lot like my weather down here!" :lmao::rotfl2: I wonder why...:rolleyes1

I still can't drive thru Lakeview, it just hurts too much seeing all the changes.

Very sad here today, my BFF's father passed away this morning, he was only 64. :sad1:

DH has been having more sinus troubles lately?

If you find out why, please let me know. Mine have been acting up something fierce the past few days. This morning was so bad I almost asked if I could go home. :headache:

Hi...
Just a quick post to let you all know Ron passed his med card today. His BP was 130/86 !!!!!!!!!!!!!:banana:

:woohoo: Yay!

Marilyn -- I am so sorry for your friend and her family's loss.

Aimee -- I'm glad Ace is doing so well in his new home. That's great! Thanks for the tips on the air fresheners. We don't use the plug-in ones here because they bother me, but Becky does.

Is Liam enjoying gymnastics?

He started last year, and he really likes it. He is not aiming to be a gymnast, but he thinks gymnastics will help him be stronger and be better in baseball.

Just a quick post to let you all know Ron passed his med card today.
:yay: I'm so happy to hear this!

my daughter gets a magazine that has beading supplies. I know she and my DIL order from them all the time. I’ll get the name of it and let you know.

Let me know too please!

How is Greg doing?

He has been very busy! They were training in Romania, but I think they are almost done. I haven't heard from him in a couple days, so that probably means they are traveling. Did I tell all of you that he is up for review for Major this month (October)? That is two years early. He probably won't get it, but it is a big honor that he is even being considered.

Usually with antibiotics they will feel better in a day or two.

Yeah, or in Caili's case, a couple hours after. I asked her how she felt tonight at dinner and she proclaimed, "I'm fine!!" I am still keeping her home from school the rest of the week. I hope your meeting with the realtor went well.

My Katie has a high tolerance too. When she was 4, she got her first ear infection, and I didn't know anything about it until her eardrum burst and I saw goop oozing out of her ear. I felt like such a bad mom!

Don't feel like a bad mom. Last year, when I brought Caili to her annual physical, she had pneumonia. I had no clue. Later the same year, I brought her in because she had a fever, and she had a double ear infection. Again, I had no idea. I am going to be calling the doctor from now on when she has a fever.

big night of noodles and sauce. Whoopie.

I think we are on our third night of pasta this week. Even Liam, who loves pasta, complained. He did eat it though. We had spaghetti and meatballs. I think my dad is bringing me some groceries tomorrow, so we can have something different.

Who was having the ravioli crockpot stew???? Glynis, was it you??? Do we have that recipe??? I hate my crockpot and need something to try out that we will like!

Laura, good luck to Greg with the Major review!! He is a dedicated person and should be very proud of the consideration! I will keep in in my prayers, let us know how it goes.

------

Not sure if I will be on much tomorrow. Luke's flu shot got rescheduled for 9:15am. It will be a chore to get out of the house that early. My cousin is coming in from Canada and will be stopping at my parents for a visit tomorrow. She asked if I would be around to see the kids. I am so excited for her to see Emma, she is the one that gave me the ton of new clothes for her.

Night all

Laura - WOW is all I can say! What a tremendous honor for Greg, please let him know how proud we all are that he's being considered!!!!!:thumbsup2

I was reading through without paying too much attention to who was writing each post. I got to your weather report and was like "Wow, that sounds a lot like my weather down here!" :lmao::rotfl2: I wonder why...:rolleyes1
:rotfl2::rotfl2:

Laura - That is really incredible news about Greg. Congratulations to him, and no matter what the outcome with this review, I'm sure he'll reach Major sooner rather than later.

The beading magazine is Fire Mountain Gems; they have a website - www.firemountaingems.com

Aimee I forgot that about the plug ins. I am glad that Ace loves your brother. How funny about the cat. Hershey loves his cats too. He brings his toys over to them. He doesn't share with just anybody.:rotfl:

Brother was worried about the cat thing - kitten is already skiddish so he terrified Ace would scare it to death. Ace is quite, um, playful. But, I got him a crate and he puts Ace upstairs in it when he leaves and Kitten gets the whole rest of the place. And then evidently in the evening they curl up together on the couch :confused3

 about Hershey!

We don't have cats, we're both really allergic to them, but the dogsitter has 5-8 at any time (strays she comes across). Mine just aggravate them. I think her cats get ticked everytime my 3 come over to play
