The What's For Dinner Thread - August '09(recipe index in OP)

Freddie is now listed under Food porn in the OP, that way we can always go back to page 1 to find him.:rotfl:

:cheer2::dance3::yay::woohoo::cheer2::dance3::yay::woohoo:

I made the OP !!

Ok sure, not quite the traditional way but be serious it was never gonnae happen for my " cooking skills " now was it !!??

" Im in the OP,Im in the OP...na na na na na..Im in the OP !!"

Happy Birthday to Patrick. I doubt he realizes just how lucky he is to have made it to 14! ;)

He doesn't. But don't place any bets on his 15th, school starts back soon. ;)

Come spend Christmas with us! On Christmas Eve morning, we always go to IHOP for brunch. It's the one time that Alan will go, and the kids look forward to it all year long!

What a fun tradition. If ours wasn't an hour away, I might convince Kenny to start that one. Instead, I made the mistake of doing the overnight french toast (blueberry, his favorite) and that has become the tradition instead. I wish I had thought ahead on our first Christmas morning together. My grandmother always said that you should begin as you mean to go on. If I had applied that to Christmas breakfast, I wouldn't be spending Christmas morning every year stirring blueberries until they burst for syrup. :sad2:

O my Glynis your lucky her in MI we can't start back till after the holiday so we don't go back til Sept. 8. We don't get many days off during the year either.

Ours start on the 17th of August, but they get every holiday off except Groundhog Day and take a bazillion teacher workdays.

:rotfl:

My DN still has her moments. When we went to Ocean City for Memorial Day weekend they discovered she wasn't wearing any underwear under her dress when the stopped to go to the bathroom right as they got into OC. My sister has her wear that and a pair of shorts and my DN forgot to put them on.

:lmao::lmao: Your poor sister.

Kind of in a funk here today. Kind of got some unsettling news and I just can't shake the bad feeling. Oh well life goes on.

 Thinking of you Ellen. Let us know if we can help. Venting works sometimes too.

Hi everyone,

Trying to come up with something for dinner tonight. I got out chicken, bacon and ham and was going to make a Chicken Eugenie or cordon bleu but now may wait until tomorrow as I have to take DD1 to the doctors. Maybe we'll do pancakes and bacon instead and make something else tomorrow night.

Welcome!

Hey - notice my ticker? :rolleyes1

I did! Congrats on the upcoming trip. And Happy Anniversary!!!! I hope you have a great time at dinner and that you are able to eat.

:rotfl2: should have read " Pool Boy "..........dont tell me youse forgot about Freddie !!

But Sheryl, I do like your thinking...oh sorry I thought you said pole !! ;)

Holy Moly Woman!!!!!! Like Laura, I won't be forgetting Freddie again!

Quick check in...Mom is here and she'll be calling me any time soon...well, she'll call Jane cuz she will have forgotten where she is.

My Mom has called me by my sister's name for so long I answer to both. But keep your sense of humor about it if you can, it helps.

Should I list him under "porn" in the index?:lmao:

:rotfl::rotfl: Great idea!!!!

We had burgers for dinner tonight. That was Liam's choice. At first I wasn't sure I wanted that, but they tasted so good after our day of sun and surf. Liam was a little disappointed that he missed out on the beach, but he had a great time at the camp too. He agreed that he would rather miss out on one afternoon of beach to skip three days of sitting in the skating rink.

That child is wise beyond his years. :thumbsup2 Glad you and Caili had a good time at the beach.

Tonight is just leftovers. I am on a mission is rip up the carpet in my spare bedroom. I am anxious to see my project complete in one room. In case I never mentioned it I am impatient.:rolleyes1

When you finish yours do you want to come help with mine?!? My kitchen floor is STILL not finished. Our floor guy has been MIA because he said his wife left him - and all four of their children ages 13 - 6. I'm trying to cut him some slack at least for a little while, but my patience is running thin.

Dinner is salad for me. I have lots left so I am having that with chicken. I have a lot of chicken so Buddy will have that.

On a sandwich I gather?

---------------

DH brought me home a Sour Cream Coffee Cake recipe from a woman at work. Everyone including DH raved about it. Seems nice and simple I am going to try to make it next week. Here is the recipe.

Sour Cream Coffee Cake
1 Package of Duncan Hines Yellow Cake Mix
1 Package of Vanilla Instant Pudding (sm box)
8 oz. Sour Cream
1/2 cup Oil
4 Eggs
1 Tpsp Vanilla Extract

Hand mix until there are no more lumps.

Filling
1/2 Cup Sugar
1/2 Cup Chopped Walnuts
2 Tsp. Cinnamon

Mix Together.

Spread 1/2 to 2/3 of mixture in Bundt Pan. Then spoon in 3/4 of fillin gmixture. Add rest of the cake mixture and then top with remaining filling. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.

(***** I made this recipe since posting it took about 50-55 minutes in bundt pan to cook. Also, I did not love the white sugar in the filling. I think next time I make it I will try to substitute brown sugar)

My kitchen floor is STILL not finished. Our floor guy has been MIA because he said his wife left him - and all four of their children ages 13 - 6.

You must be so aggravated! I know there are extenuating circumstances, but there is only so long you can deal with the house in renovation stage...especially the kitchen!

Laura, glad you had a nice beach day with Caili. I miss the beach, it has been to long.

Well, if you ever do visit the Rugged Bear Outlet, we aren't that much further. You are welcome to join us! There's a carousel, the kids can have ice cream and we can have fried clams from my favorite fish market. :thumbsup2 The coffee cake sounds great!

Janice -- I'm glad you found the flooring you wanted and are way more motivated at home renovation than I am. I like doing improvements around the house...they just happen very slowly.

Hey all! Just wanted to pop in quick and let ya'll know that we made it back safe and sound last night. Not w/o some travel drama--but we all made it home in one piece. We went cherry picking one morning, so I've got a cherry pie in the oven right now. We had a lot of good Wisconsin cheese, sausage and beer. Time for me to get back in the gym. I have some great pics of our trip--but have to recharge the camera battery before I can post them. Okay, need to go back to finishing up clearing out my inbox and check on my pie. Will be back later!

We actually only started the IHOP tradition a few years ago. We used to spend every Christmas with my parents, but it got to be too hard to travel that long, and transport all the gifts, etc. So, we decided to stay home for Christmas. Alan likes a big meal on Christmas Eve, and a full Christmas dinner as well. I have always made a big breakfast for Christmas day, so I decided that if I was going to be doing all that cooking on the holiday (not to mention the cleanup), he could dang well take me out for brunch on Christmas Eve morning! So far, it's worked out really well. I've even managed to cut back on the Christmas Eve meal. Instead of tons of food, we now do appetizers and soup and that's it. So, I'm getting my pancake and eating it, too!:rotfl:

dont tell me youse forgot about Freddie !!

*drool*

Thanks everyone for your concern.

Nothing MAJOR just a big dissapointment for all of us. The sun WILL come up tomorrow and with everything else going on in this thread it is nothing.

But thanks SO much for all of the good wishes. You have no idea how much I appreciate it. Life goes on.

Ellen

Let me get preachy... don't discount disappointments and hardships in your life due to others having it "worse off." There will always be someone worse off than all of us, but that doesn't make our pain any less painful or our struggles any less difficult.

Aimee -- I can't see your ticker. :confused3

That's weird :confused3 We just confirmed our trip to Orlando over Christmas so I stuck a ticker up. :goodvibes

Ellen listen to Aimee, she is one wise lady!

Aimee I glad you were able to eat & I hope you feel well tonight!

We've stayed at the Dolphin, but it's been about 6 yrs. They didn't have all of the dining options they have now. The rooms were very nice.

Stephanie, (my multi-quote missed your post) Welcome home!!:goodvibes Sounds like a great fattening trip! Sorry you had a little road drama. Mmmm home made cherry pie! I'll be right over.

Welcome Home! Care to share your travel drama with us?

My DDIL went to WI for a business trip. She was on WW, traveling while on any meal plan like WW is hard. Well, Erica loves cheese. Any kind of cheese. But good cheese is almost like crack for her. He colleagues in WI wanted to show her a good time while she visited their site and of course food was involved in each treat. She got offered cheese as an incentive for everything. Poor girl was between a rock and a cheese wheel, gave up and enjoyed each different cheese in every place she went :cutie:

We actually only started the IHOP tradition a few years ago. We used to spend every Christmas with my parents, but it got to be too hard to travel that long, and transport all the gifts, etc. So, we decided to stay home for Christmas.

I think this is a wonderful tradition. If Buddy had his way we would have every Holiday home, but I put my foot down years ago. I could not keep it all up. If he offered Christmas Eve morning at IHOP I would be :yay:!

Today is Steak and salad. I have broccoli and green beans so I'll be cooking one of those.

Ladies, my wine looks so pretty! We have three different kinds going right now. I have a Pinot Grigio that is all degasses and will be ready to bottle at the end of September. It is clearing nicely. I also have a Pinot Grigio Rosato that is working. We racked it yesterday, stirred the dickens out of it adn wil be doing this for three more days. It is a ways from being ready to bottle. Welby racked her Pinot Noir and it is on the way too. I think I am going to get a Chardonnay going next week. I want to have them bottled for christmas but most should rest in the bottles for some time after that. Welby is going to start another Merlot next.

Now our next project is bottles. We need to buy what we do not have so I am doing my part to make sure that if I buy a bottle it starts with wine already ;) It is a rough job, drinking all that wine but I am willing to take one for the team!

Have a great day All!

Nancy I am glad you are such a team player :rotfl2: Too bad we are all so far away. You would have a surplus. Alex loves IHOP me not so much. The one IHOP we used to go to years ago was so dirty I couldn't eat. I should give it another shot.

I got part of the carpet up. Surprise the carpet padding is foam.:confused3 This builder did everything on the cheap. I am all for a bargain but foam. Thank god we never had a fire :scared1: I hope to have to rest of the carpet up tonight but I am not going to overdo it. I have to go to work this week. Where did I get such heavy furniture?:rolleyes1

Dinner is undecided today might be stormy. I would like to grill.

Janice- I have had to tear carpeting up several times and i have never liked what was underneath unless I had it installed myself. In my first house the kitchen was carpeted in a black rubber backed rug that had gotten "glued" onto the floor beneath  I saved a lot of money removing it myself but thankfully the floor guy took pity on me an helped me get the rest off the floor. It was the only time I regretted having a large eat in kitchen :sad2:

Just popping in with a photo of last night's dinner: Grilled chicken on roasted fennel and cherry tomatoes, with kalamata olives. I meant to serve this on swiss chard but I forgot to cook it! Some grilled bread on the side. BBL to catch up!

Nancy- Sorry about all the crops you lost

Amy- Hope your still feeling ok this morning

Aimee, I appreciated your "preachy" advice to Ellen. Something we all should keep in mind, thanks. Can't wait to hear what you think of the Dolphin. We went to WDW in December, it was my favorite visit ever. Enjoy.

Steph, welcome back.

Just sitting here thinking of Maria enjoying some Bermuda sunshine. I hope she enjoyed a mojito or two for me. That was my cruise drink of choice on our honeymoon...ah, the memories!

Ugh, DH had car trouble yesterday. We need to get it towed to the mechanic today...time for new car shopping!!! It just isn't going ot be worth spending money on to fix.

taking DM on errands today, then picking DH up at work. Dinner is going to be quick and easy...grilled ham steaks, baked beans and caprese salad.

Lauri- the adjuster came by earlier this year and told me that he had never met DH. He said that told him that Buddy was a very responsible grower, some farmers decide if it is in their best interests to neglect a crop but my DH could never do that. Before he decided to give this one up he brought samples to the experimental center so they could help him find a way to save them. We are fortunate though, he just has a small patch and it is not our livelihood. With the exception of this year and last, we have had good luck and have always sold. Not all of the farmers in our area can say that so we are nto complaining. It could be worse.

Aimee- I so agree with what you said but in our case it really is worse for some others. My friend owns the last family farm in the next town. He grows beautiful produce and flowers, his broadleaf is as lovely as this leafy plant can be ;). His broadleaf tends to carry the biggest share of carrying the produce and it has not had the good grace to just give up. Like some neighor farms he is probably going to have to continue feeding it, cultivating it, spraying it and then take it in, cure and then take it down and bundle it. Only to lose it somewhere between curing and in the bundles. And then wait for close to a year to get a reinbursement from teh insurance company. If there is a reimbursement. You just don't know.

The shade guys are losing it in the sheds and have pretty much stopped picking. These are labor intensive crops so you never can get it back once spent and they depend on this year to finance next. It's a mess. The people who are really struggling are the farm workers. Once a field is harrowed under there is no workthere so everyone around here is trying to find work for them. Haying was an option in the past but the hay fields are so wet, it will take a long time to dry them out. You cannot get equipment in there.

If I can figure out how I will post some pics of ours. Buddy sunk the tractor and needed a backhoe to drag it out. It was buried wicked deep!
