The Welcom that President Bush was going to give Clinton.

I really hope the whole political class was paying attention to what was being lauded about President Reagan and learn something from it.
We can only hope!

Back to the topic at hand ... given the gracious way President Bush spoke during this ceremony, I find this article on Scrappleface quite unfunny. Maybe it is time to let some things go.

I agree. This one was out of bounds.

Are we getting close to a group hug?????

Just give me a little warning so I can get out of here!!!;)

Too late...

:grouphug:

Dang ... my eyes are watering ... must be that darned pixie dust...

This is just ... so ... beautiful ...

GINGRICH: I'm a second-term member sitting on the platform for the inaugural. The sky is very cloudy. We're sitting there. It becomes Reagan's turn to speak. Literally, the sky breaks loose. It was like Cecil B. Demille. The sky breaks into sunshine. It's beautiful. And all the members, as he's getting up, the word is passing that the hostages have left Iranian air space. It was just this magic moment. We had 444 days of this stuff. And before he's even sworn in, the Iranians have decided to send back the hostages because they didn't want to try take on Reagan.

O'REILLY: Do you think that was the reason?

GINGRICH: Absolutely. I think that they -- I think they thought if they waited, he would humiliate them and coerce them. And it was better to get it over with.

O'REILLY: So you thought that the -- your opinion is they released the hostages. And you remember, Walter Cronkite every night would say it's been 444 -- you know.

GINGRICH: Yes.

O'REILLY: And that just destroyed Carter right there.

GINGRICH: Absolutely.

O'REILLY: And you thought it was because Khomeini feared the U.S.A's retaliation?

GINGRICH: Yes. I think that Reagan was seen as a cowboy who would do anything. And I think the Reagan people quietly were saying to the Iranians...

O'REILLY: Oh, absolutely.

GINGRICH: ...we will do anything.

I could go on and find other sites to reinforce the reasons I believe as I do, but none of it can be proven as fact anyway. It's only our opinions. Reagan was never one to gloat and if you've listened to many interviews where people spoke of him, we hear a lot of stories where Reagan was responsible for this, that, or the other, but never took any credit for it. I think this is very likely one such story.

I see nothing in that conversation that suggests Reagan was doing some backroom negotiation with Iran.

I looked all over their site and there simply isn't much about Reagan there anymore. What is there is simply about his death for the most part. I remember in another thread, you said you don't watch Fox or tv news coverage at all?? Well, they had a lot (I'm sure you're aware) of coverage, and the subject came up several times. Unfortunately however, everything that is on TV, is not listed on their site.

This however, leads me to believe that even Newt Gingrich believes there was some talking going on.

If you ain't biting, aint no one gonna bite:crazy:

have to admit though, I am concerned about your having accidently ingested pixie dust....would it be considered a personal attack if I ask if you have mellowed?;)

I totally agree. I also would add that President Clinton was gracious in his remarks to President Bush, just as he should have been. I can't imagine anyone thinking this drivel is funny -- reading the first third was plenty for me.

I guess we'll never know. It just seems out of character to me for Reagan to one-up Carter before being in office. I think he respected the office of the Presidency too much.

I never said he one uped Carter. That's not in Reagan's character. I just feel that he played a larger part than we'll ever know. A good quote comes to mind.

"There is no limit to what you can accomplish if you don't care who gets the credit."
