My daughters theory....the original group all are infected(remember that discussion) so when Daryl licked his fingers and shook the kids hand and then he ate...virus transferred. Kills the second round of infected vs. The first. Hmmmm

I was thinking the same thing that when he shook hands he transferred something to him....he was fine before than as far as we could tell....it may be some other kind of virus...or disease....maybe one that the adults are protected against from vaccines and kids are not protected against....

what ever it is it may very well be in the water supply....maybe it is a virus from the pig.....did he take care of the pigs?

I just watched The Talking Dead. The rat-bait thing is addressed a bit more..

And what the heck was wrong with that kid? Coughing = death?! Tuberculosis?

I wonder if the kid and pig died from the same thing?

My guess is that people are overthinking that angle... Everyone seems to be focusing in on the idea that the disease is related to the zombie epidemic, but I think it is much simpler than that. In any post-apocalyptic scenario known illnesses that we don't think much of will become deadly. That the illness has claimed a pig and a human points to influenza, since the virus tends to pass readily between the two species. I don't think the sickness itself has anything to do with the walkers; it merely serves to point out the vulnerability of their position even when it seems secure... All it takes is one fatal illness and now there's a walker loose inside the prison where everyone has let their guard down.

As did Phineas when he died. Influenza doesn't usually result in bleeding from the eyes.
Why the heck was he leaving bloody footprints when he walked? Where was that blood coming from?

I think it's something like ebola hemorrhagic fever. It crosses species and that whole vomiting, weird bleeding thing is involved. Maybe they die from that and the newer victims still display the last symptoms as walkers.

I ALSO wondered why the resident vet didn't take a look at a sick Violet. Didn't make sense when farming was so important.

And, maybe Daryl didn't transfer it. Maybe he gets sick and then gets better with some kind of natural immunity. There are hints about how devastating this new disease is and I think they make journeys to large metro areas in order to gain access to equipment/meds to deal with it. I'm laughing at myself with all of these hypotheses.

I really like this first episode of the season. I didn't enjoy last season with Rick's psychotic break and weird visions. Not to mention Andrea ignoring the reality of that town and the Governor. She completely discounted the instincts of someone she survived/fought with for months! THAT break with reality wasn't believable.

I love Michonne. I hope her days aren't numbered this season.

I wonder if the Govenor could be baiting the fence???? He's still out there somewhere, or do ya'll think he's long gone??

On The Talking Dead they showed a short clip of the first scene from the next episode. Since it could be considered a spoiler I will put it, and my theory, in white...

The clip shows the walkers at the fence. It cuts to the scene of a rat being lowered into view from the walkers' perspective. The rat tries to crawl through one of the holes in the fence and is eaten by a walker.

I think that there are people inside the camp that are feeding the walkers. Perhaps it is the kids who were naming them (led by that one girl) or perhaps it is someone else, but I think that may be the reason there are so many walkers at the fence lately.

I think the zombie with the bloody eyes died from the same thing as the the guy in the in prison. Not influenza but some other sort of infectious disease due to lack of sanitary conditons and medical treatmemt.

What about the new guy that got trapped under the shelf of wine (didn't catch his name). Didn't he rip off a piece if the walkers head? Could that have been what caused Patrick to die? Maybe he is planting infection? So many new things to think about this season!

I think Patrick was sick before they came back. He was sick during storytime, and I think that was when they were still out on the run.

Exactly. I don't think it's a "zombie virus", but a human virus (like ebola?) that is spreading like crazy because of all the unsanitary conditions that are a result of the zombie apocolypse. That was one of their main concerns too about keeping the zombies back from the prison. They didn't want the soil and water to get contaminated over time. They don't really have access to modern medicine anymore either.

I still think they have a traitor in the midst. I think it may be Bob (is that the guy who knocked over the wine shelves?) Anyway I think he may be feeding the walkers and I think that is why there are so many of them there in the mornings. Somehow walkers get in the prison, according to a preview for next week, so we will see but it seems someone lets them in. I don't think its the children feeding them though. Maybe Tyrees is feeding them? He kept saying he couldn't kill them, but then again I don't think he would purposely feed them.

The talking dead was good. They basically said this episode is setting up for the entire season and they would explore everything that was shown in the premier. They also said they are introducing a lot of new characters both in the comics and not in the comics. They said there are a lot of things that are going to happen and new threats will be introduced. I think they are off to a fantastic start.

Did anyone see the exclusive sneak peak on the Talking Dead? That gave us a little clue as to who may or may not be the traitor.

I agree with the idea of a virus and the bleeding eye zombie was infected as well, he was shown repeatedly. I think nothing is safe from the disease. Man, animal or zombie. The zombie also had that grey- green coloring that Clara had on her face and chest. It was only a matter of time before a major disease came into play.

What a great episode! I had fallen behind last season, so my mom and I spent all day Sunday watching the 3rd season, then the premier. It wasn't the most intense episode ever, but it was good. Looks to be an interesting season.

I agree that the weird-eye walker means/will mean something. I don't think they've ever focused on one specific walker like that before, and he was definitely different than the usual ones.

Bob is a little...off. There's something about him, I dunno. I just think there's something about him that will come out later. I mean, beyond the apparent alcoholism.

Really looking forward to the rest of the season, but also scared of who's going to die on us this time around, lol. As long as it's not Daryl or Maggie I'm fine.

I just watched The Talking Dead, again;).

In the sneak peek to next weeks episode where they show someone feeding the rat to the walker through the fence, I definitely feel that it is an adult doing it.

Check out the way the flashlight is being held, more adult-like. Usually don't see children holding a flashlight with that type of grasp. And the rat is being lowered down to the opening in the fence, right at the level of the walker's mouth. To me this means it is a person of adult height. If it were a child, they would have to reach up to feed the walker.

Lots of great discussion here!!!!!

Yeah, I think you've got it. That little girl had to have heard an adult(s) talking about the walkers still being people, though. Maybe the person(s) feeding the walkers are her parent/guardian(s)?

And to those who posted it - my mind went to ebola right away too! It definitely causes hemorrhaging of all body orifices as well as areas of skin... like the bottoms of his feet. Is it that fast-moving, though, that he wouldn't be completely incapacitated before bleeding out like that? :confused3 That was only a few hours between story time and his middle-of-the-night shower.

Keep in mind, they aren't restricted to known diseases on the show. Once you've introduced a zombie infection, that we all totally buy into while watching, you can make up other stuff to suit your story!

I was totally on the Hanta/Ebola/Monkey virus train with that episode. Heck...even a wicked strain of influenza.
