the vet!!

Oh my, this board always amazes me. We have a kitten that came from my parents house. He was a barn cat, and I think my parents have more orange cats than corn! We knew when we brought him home that he had a sinus infection, with lots of sneezing and discharge. Before we brought him home,we had him checked out at my parent's vet. He was given an antibiotic, and his shots. Total bill for that visit: $81.00. His sinus infection hasn't cleared, and he still needed one shot. So we go to the vet. Total bill for this trip: $131.00. $80 of which was medication. I know I am going to pay for the office visit. I know I am going to pay for the medication, but that is a huge markup. So I didn't wait for months not taking care of the health of my pet!

Again I didn't say this was your situation, I am sorry if you felt I implied that it was. Also if you feel your vet is trying to take you for a ride, find another one. As a lawyer I'm sure you got pretty jaded to the complaining of why someone didn't want to pay you for your services. That feeling runs across all professions.

When I go to my doctor, I am not forced to buy my prescriptions from them ,so why should it be that way for our pets? It's basically like holding us hostage. My doctor doesn't care if I get my prescription filled at a drugstore or supermarket, etc. so why should a vet care where I get my dogs. I am writing this just after getting off the phone with my vet to get medications for my dog, whose allergies are on fire this week. :confused3

Also if you feel your vet is trying to take you for a ride, find another one.

This is pretty simple advice. :confused3

I can understand everyone's frustration when comparing their vet to their personal dr. I don't know a single person that has ever felt scammed, had to pay more than they should have or had tests ran that gave inconclusive results. :rotfl2:

Sigh. This board amazes me as well. Again, as Jey12 stated, if I was raking in cash I wouldn't be on this board looking to save money myself. I think I will just avoid any pet related threads from now on.

Well - I want to tell you that I absolutely appreciate the expertise and care the vet gave my puppy - worth every penny they charged. It does sting a bit with the unexpected high cost (as any other unexpected expense) just like my son's $1500 (after insurance) bill for tubes last year. Was it worth it - YES - just hard to let go of such a chunk at once :)

I always leave the vet & the mechanic feeling the same, broke and taken for a ride. lol. But cant take chances with my fur baby!!!! He is going to have to get a job if this keeps up. We just got referred to a vet Opthamologist.

Had to do that route once. My boxer had white spots turn up on her eye. They weren't abrassions and the regular vet was baffled. It 2 months to get an appointment. Cost $300. Turns out the dog has fat deposits on her eyes. I still would have taken her through. The cost is never to great when it comes to my girls.
