The Very Best Cruise- Eastern Caribbean 1/17/2009

Really enjoying your TR....we leave next Friday for the same intinerary and I'm soaking up all the great information. I do have one question though...I can't read the navigators very well. Can you tell me what time the clubs open on St. Maarten day? We are doing the Intro Scuba at 8:00am, but our children are too young so we're leaving them on the ship for the 2 hours. I'm concerned that the clubs won't be open that early.

If you click on the Navigator it will bring you to my upload page. It might not be any better. Anyway, it has it listed here that the scuba dive meet is at 7:45 am at Sessions (yours could be different). The Lab opens at 7:30 and it looks like this is where all kids should be dropped off. The navigator has all age groups going to the Lab and says it opens at 7:30 so you should have no problem.

We woke up to a nice partly sunny low to mid 80's day. Almost as good as yesterday in St Marteen. Unfortunately we did wake up with another wake up call from our worker friends upstairs at 6:30am. Lucky Mary and I were able to fall back to sleep and get up about an hour later. The kids were still sleeping as they were tired from the POTC party and movie last night

We ordered some room service and this time they came down with the right croissants (chocolate). We also had some bagels, hot chocolate, and milk. They kids really didn't eat much. I guess they were still full from last night also.

We walked down to the Promenade Lounge and signed in around 8:15am. We were doing the Land and Sea Adventure at Coral World today. This was a little stop at Coral World, whcih is an outdoor (mostly) squarium of sorts with a quick run in a semi submersible sub. What was funny is that they started telling us to get some towels and everyone looked reall confused. Of course we all knew that we were not supposed to get wet on this excursion but someone did not tell the person in charge of the sign ups. Luckily another cast member came over and filled her in and everything was taken care of.

We walked outside and we were met by some reps from Coral World who gave out wristbands. We hoped in some open air buses and headed out into St Thomas. It took a 20 minute ride to get to Coral World. We past such great site seeing stops such as McDonald's, Hooters, and Wendy's. The other areas were really rough, kind of third worldish but not that bad, just rough.

When we arrived at Coral World we were met by another representative who told us what time we should be back for the sub part of our excursion and then we were off on our own to explore. It is a small place and our first stop was at the Coral Reef Encounter. We stayed for a lecture and watched a feeding done by a diver who goes in the tank.

We then hit the area called Shark Shallows. this is a small area where some nurse and black tip sharks are. They are all very young and they are kept here until the get a little older and then they are tagged and released. What was really cool is the lecturer took out a nurse shark and let us pet it. Cool feeling, to pet a shark, even if it is a baby. In case you don't know...Discovery Channel moment by me here because I do know...we were able to pet this shark as you see below because a nurse shark is able to lie on the ocean's bottom, they do not have to constantly swim to survive like other sharks do.

We then saw the really big Sea Turtles being feed. This is a rehab pool and these to Turtles are rehabbing and will eventually be sent on there way.

There is a big bird cage with Lorikeets which is a walk through and a Sting Ray observation. There is an Observation tower where you can look at under the water and watch people to the Sea Trek. They walk under the water and interact with the fishies.

On top of the Observation deck

After about an 1 1/2hrs we went over and met the group for the sub tour.We were going to board the Nautilus IV. We saw a lot of fish, a shipwreck (although tough to see as it was on the other side of the sub), an airplane (it was dumped here as an artificial reef) and a diver went out and fed the fish.

It was all finished up by 11:45 and we were on our way back to the ship. The driver asked if anyone was going to go into town and only us and another family said so. So, after he dropped off everyone else he took us into town.

We walked a little around but we were hungry so we asked a local and we were told to try Glady's Cafe. It is down a little alley. They did not have a kid's menu per se but the waitress was nice enough to have the cook make grilled cheese and fries for the kids. Mary had a Swiss cheesebuger with fries and I had a grilled mahi mahi on a bun. I added some hot sauce to it (they had three different kinds). The food was very good.

We saw another Rolex place. As usual I had to go in. This time it would be different. They showed me a different watch almost the same as the other one but nicer but for some reason this was the same price as the one I saw in St Thomas. The one I saw in St Thomas was $400 less. I broke down after Mary kept nagging me to buy it. So I am now a proud owner of a Rolex. We also got a $50 gift certificate to use in thier store, which included other jewelry, perfume or liqour. Mary didnt want anything so we bought a bottle of wine and 2 bottles of Bailey's.

We decided to head back as it was starting to get cloudy. The taxi ride was $4pp. We walked over to the ship and it seemed like the boarding was taking forever. Just as we were getting into the ship it started to drizzle and just as I handed my KTTW cards in the weather outside turned nasty. It started to POUR. Man I felt bad for the folks on line behind me, but hey we were dry...oh well. We walked upstairs to the room and by the time we got there, the rain was over and done with.

We realxed in the room a little (kids and I) and Mary went to the gym. I ordered room service for the kids because I think I forgot to tell you, it was Palo Dinner night for Mommy and Daddy. Plus I get to show the Rolex off right away :) Moira just wanted a Caesar salad and James ended up ordering Steak and Scallops. They both got the Double Fudge Chocolate Cake. The food was off the Lumiere's menu and the dessert was from Animator's.

The kids and Mary then went souvenir shopping while I got ready for Palo. When it was time for our reservation, 8pm, the kids went to the Club. We walked up and were seated promptly by Petro, the Matre D' and our server was Fernando again. This was great. He obviously remembered us from the Brunch and what was great is Petro remembered us also. We talked to Fernando at length and found out that he has worked for DCL for 7 years and this was his second contract as a Palo server. He also lives in Peru but is from Chile (or vice versa). We couldn't believe how tough it is for him to be away from his wife and kids for 6 months at a time. He is a great guy and a great server.

To the food. We started our night off with a nice glass of Asti Spumate champagne and then had some clamari, tuna capaccio, prosciutto pizza (excellent), rack of lamb, scallops, lobster ravioli and of course, shocolate souffles for dessert. Fernando came with some lime sorbet after the appetizers and vanilla flambe for an extra dessert. He also treated us to a lime sorbet, champagne and vodka after dinner drink. It was fabulous. Obviously we were stuffed. Ask for Fernando if you are going he was great.

Our plan was to go to Sessions to have a drink or two but we were two pooped so we headed back to the room and relaxed a little while before we picked up the kids around 10:30pm. They did some pillow cases that night at the club but it seemed they lost theirs or misplaced them. The counselors gave them new ones and told them they could come back Friday night and make it up.

Next up Thursday: at sea Day

Just another animal hanging around in our room

In all my notes about the trip I can not remember when it was but I think it was today, Wednesday. We talked to Erika and Andriea. I in fact told Ericka about our daily wake up calls. She said she would try to talk to someone about it but I honestly did not think it would help. I am sure they wouldn't stop working just because I complained about being woke up. They do need to put out the chairs and loungers and tables before everyone gets up. Here are some pictures of the food that was available to us in Rockin Bar D'

Even a special guest came out for the reception

Thanks for another great update! :thumbsup2 You're two little pirates are so cute! pirate: You're report is helping me get through till this coming Saturday when we finally get to board the Magic! :cool1: Thanks again! :flower3:

Your trip report brings back such good memories of our cruise. Thank you so much!!

Ahh Thursday, an at sea day. Of course there it is, 6:30 am like an alarm clock, the dragging of the chairs and such up on dck 9. Well this is becoming a really bad habit. Mary was alrady up before hand so it didn't ake her but it woke me. I usually like to sleep and NEVER get up this early. Why I am up during vacation is beyond me. So, I decided to go and run upstairs and see for myself what was going on. As we expected they were setting up the chairs and tables by the Goofy pool.

Being that I was up I figured I would go and do some laundry. Last cruise we didn't do any and this cruise this time would be our second time puttting laundry in. This is smart because we will do this in the future to cut down on the clothese we have to bring. It seems that two other people had the same idea because they were also doing their laundry.

I went back to the room and like I have done I went to the gym early. I had a good run on the treadmill, seas calmer, and somehow when I got off I found a pleasant surprise. I weighed myself and it said I was only a 1/2 ib more than when I left. I think there is no way that is true and am starting to believe DCL has a defective scale.

Mary had taken the kids to the Character breakfast this morning instead of me. Luckily, I got an early morning so I was able to catch them just as they were starting their breakfast in Parrot Cay. I sat down and ordered an egg white omelette and a toasted bagel. I like character dining and felt that this breakfast while busy is very fun. You get some good up close time with the characters and it doesn't feel rushed even though it is. We saw Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Chip and Dale. James was upset because somehow we ended up missing Pluto. But, we had to leave, the kids were starting to get antsy and fighting with each other as we sat there doing nothing and waiting. So time to leave in order to get on with the day.

James and I went to collect our laundry in the laundry room. It was done...and just put out on the table by someone else. A person just took our clothes out of the dryer and put it on the table. Not nice but I guess understandable as the laundry roo right now was very crowded. It did look like things were getting a little intense in there as others had moved laundry around from washers anddryers even though it wsa not there own laundry. Thankfully all of our laundry was there and none of it was misplaced.

We decided that we would book our next cruise on the ship to get the incentives of re-booking. I think it is 10% off and a $100 credit. In addition, it is only $125 pp instead of the usual $250. I went to Carolyn and she booked us on the 12/4/10 Eastern in a Cat 4 room. Unfortunately she could not give us a confirmation # because the computers were down (PS we would not get our confirmation # while we were on the ship, computers remained down but my TA got it once we got home so all is good). We do plan on moving this reservation to Jan '11 most likely.

Today was going to be a relaxing day. Fun Fun and more Fun. Nothing really planned for the most part except for a couple of tastings for me, Mary had a facial and a massage planned, and the kids had their Friendship Rocks show. So, stay tuned for the rest of Thursday.

Great trip report! There aren't many TR's done about the Eastern Itin.- Thanks again for taking the time and sharing!
PS You have a beautiful family!:)

Ooooh, this thrills me to bits. Can you get egg white omelettes substituted at anywhere omelettes are offered, Palo, Omelette Station, the sit down restaurants?

Or is it only specific places? I saw an omelette on one of the menus that looked yummy, but I was not sure if egg white would be an option.

Thanks for the trip report. It's bringing back so many fun memories. :goodvibes

We were on that same trip (and some of the poor, unfortunate souls trapped out in the pouring rain when trying to embark in St. Thomas at the end of the day).

Funny coincidence...Hubby & I (and the couple we were travelling with) were on the same dining rotation as you (PLAPLAP)...at the same table (65). It's just that we were at the late seating. When you mentioned your servers were Ivan & May, I just had to go back and 'blow-up' your KTTW card pics to see what table you were at. Too funny!

The reservations system for re-booking must have been down all week. We were able to complete our booking for the 3/20/2010 Western sailing when we got home a few days later. Still got the perks of booking on board, though.

Looking forward to the rest of your report. :thumbsup2

Hi Dwick. We are doing the Eastern Carribean cruise on 4/11. We are booked for Intro Scuba with our DD, 15, DD, 12. (We will be leaving DD, 9 & DD, 4 on the ship.) Can you let us know how the excursion was? DH is scuba certified but don't have enough time to get the kids certified before the trip. This sounds like the next best thing. Enjoy your trip!

I just asked at the Character breakfast but I am sure that you would be able to order it from any of the restaurants that are serving breakfast. Maybe not at the buffet (scrambled eggs).

So after going to Rockin Bar D to get some bottles of water (4 for $8.05) the kids and I went to the sports deck and Mary went to the gym. James played some basketball while Moira and I practiced and watched James.

Some pictures of the B-ball kid

Afterwards we went to the Family Pool. We went back and forth between the pool and the hot tub. It wasn't a reall sunny day but the water was warm. They keep the water regulated and the pools are anywhere from 84-86 degrees. The hot tub was really nice also. Mary came by after the gym and she came swimming a little also.

After the pool we all had lunch with the kids and Mary hitting Pluto's (hot dog/fries for the kids, cajun chicken/fries for Mary) and I hit Goofy's Galley. I had a roast beef on sour dough with some fresh cantaloupe and pineapple. I just love fresh pineapple and some of the best is on the ship. I also went into Topsiders and because I saw people coming out with sushi and I LOVE sushi. I ran right in and got some California and Tuna rolls (darn no spicy tuna). They diud have a really good selection and I tried a few. They were all good. Of course, our lunch would not be complete without some big shocolate ship cookies.

We went back to the room to wash up and changed. The kids and I went souvenir shopping and Mary went of to the Vista spa for her facial followed by a massage.

I dropped the kids off at the club and I headed off to the Martini tasting at Diversions. Agniewski from Poland did the tasting and went over all the different points about good martinis and differences between some of them. She was very informative and made the tasting session very interesting. The martinis were a regular martini (also made it dirty after a few sips), appletini, passiontini and chocolatini. They were all very good.

I walked around taking some pictures of the ship after the tasting. A chipping (golf) contest was going on in the adult pool. They were trying to give away free drinks to anyone who could chip the ball into a life preserver being held in the water by a cast member. I saw a lot of people try but only two got the free drink.

Another beer tasting was on the horizon and this one was done by Yelena again. We were given Yeungling, Petroni, Boddington and Guinness. We saved a little of the Guinness and they added a shot of Bailey's Irish Cream. No for anyone who knew what they were doing this was unfair because they were saying these were Irish car bombs and while it was good. They were certainly not Irish car bombs. A true Irish car bomb is Guinness, Jameson whiskey and Bailey's. They are VERY dangerous when drinking them. (Not that I would know ;) . But I tried it anyway and held it down the best I could.

I went up to the Theater and Mary came to meet me. It was time for the Friendship Rocks show. The kids were going to come in and sing and graduate for the clubs. I saw James and Moira being lead in to the theater through an entrance in the back of Diversions. They saw me and caught me during the beer tasting. This show is really cute and they are joined by Mickey and Minnie on stage which is really cool for them. We took some photos of the show.

We went up to the club and quickly picked up the kids so we could go back to the room to get ready for dinner. Tonight was semi-formal night and would be the first time and only time we would be eating in Animator's Palate. Again, Mary enjoyed this restaurant just not as much as the others. I thought it was were we were sitting but she felt otherwise. Our diner tonight would change her mind.

Unfortunately there was a note saying that Erika and Andreia from the concierge team came by and brought Mickey Bas for the kids. Oh well but some chocolate strawberries and mini cakes were left.

We went to dinner and our table was in a really good spot and really helped in seeing this reastaurant in a different light. We both had a garden mixed salad. Mary had the Lobster tails but was very undecided because she was thinking of getting the sauteed shrimp. I had the Venison whcih was very good. To our suprise, Ivan came by and brought some sauteed shrimp for Mary. Of course, I had to help her finish it off. The kids had some chicken tenders with BBQ sauce. We all shared two separate orders of the Chocolate Lava Cake. Many that was so good.

After dinner we went up to Shutters to get our picture orders. What's new is that they have photo kiosks (like the Photopass machines in some of the parks and resorts like Grand Floridian) where you put your KTTW card in and all your phtos were there. Of course, there were some other people's photos mixed in but all of ours were there. This was good because you didn't have to go around finding them all over the place. You could see the photos you liked and then only went to search for them. This was a nice touch and was something new.

The show for tonight was Disney Dreams. This is one of the best shows on the ship and there is a reason why they leave it to the end. The kids loved it and always talk about it for the next week.

It was last minute shopping time and we got some final souvenirs for Mary's siter and her son. The kids of course couldn't leave the store without getting one last thing. After Mary and I decided against going out because she was tired so we called it an early night.

BTW- she says the facial was really nice and te massage was so relaxing and definately felt great. They tried to sell her stuff but they did not push it. Mary held off and did not by anything. She got the L'therapie facial and full body massage.

Hi Bytor01. I have really enjoyed your trip report. We have never done the 7day cruise so this has really given me great insight on what to expect. Love the pictures of your Cat. 3 room! We were Cat. 4 back in 2001 on the Wonder so that's as good as it gets for us. Now Cat. 12 (family of 6 + 2 staterooms = dipping into college fund!) and we are sailing 4/11/09 on the Eastern itinerary. With that all being said...my question is, were the wine/tequila/margarita/beer tasting free and do you recommend them? How do you sign up? Thanks!
