School districts asked the state legislature for permission to start early, since Labor Day is "late" this year. The concern was one more week of instruction before state testing dates in the spring. The legislature voted NO, Minneapolis schools asked for and received a waiver... considering their past test scores

they need every minute of instruction they can fit into the year.
My boys are in a first ring suburb school (highly rated, scores high on testing and among the top high schools in the US) they start on September 9th, E's district starts September 1st...but the teachers are already placing bets that attendance will be very poor the first week.

School has ALWAYS started after Labor Day in MN, old traditions of following the harvest cycle are hard to break down. Though now our economy relies on tourism more than farming these days.. if all the schools started before Labor Day it would be a hard hit to vacation spots "up north" for those last minute trips to squeeze in before school. Even the State Fair runs the two weeks before Labor Day, the last hoo-rah of summer fun.

E was appointed head of the middle school team... by default because the 3 other teachers are new, have other extra jobs or just plain "don't want to do anything this year". Mix of excitement and apprehension, the mentor teacher has already offered to help in anyway she can... I think he will be just fine.
Watching him at work today was fun for me, but also made me realize that the other
junk beyond teaching can drag ya down. Meetings and more meetings when the original plan for the day was to just work in the classroom. Then he had other teachers walking thru and spouting off on how this or that should be done, other staff popping in to ask questions and the engineers popping in to check of he got all the tables he wanted (need two more please... ) .. gah!!
I liked being an assistant teacher for a reason, let me teach!! I could care less about the paperwork and making nice with other staff.. just let me do what I like: TEACH the children!
