Can someone help me with the words (just chorus) and actions? I have the original words, but do they use the same animals as in the original song? When I found them on the Net and read them, they didn't sound as familiar as I thought they would, so I wondered if Jellyrolls had changed them up a bit. Also, what are the actions they make the crowd do? I want to teach this song to my cubs, but need to work out the actions.

The animals in the original song are: green alligators, long necked geese, humpy back camels and chimpanzees, cat and rats and elephants ..... and of course the unicorns!

Here's what I've got so far ....
- alligators - snapping teeth with your fingers
- long necked geese?? Do I just raise a hand and wave it around like a long neck?
- camels - just make a wave with your hand - looks like humps
- chimpanzees - easy
- cats and rats - what do we do here??
- elephants and unicorns - easy

So, any ideas?

I don't know about jellyrolls, but I recall from singing this when I was younger that cats are cupped hands pretending to be ears and rats are whiskers

Oy, we were just there last night and I'll be darned if I can remember

Alligators - they do arms outstretched and snapping (if that makes sense) so it looks like a big gator mouth

geese - um, I think they started with their hand mid-chest and ran it up along under their neck (almost like a throwing up motion, but not. awful description, I know)

camels - I think they did wavy hands but over their shoulder

chimps - you got

cats and rats - cat ears and whiskers for the rats

and you know elephants and unicorns.

Hope that helps a bit.

Can't help you. Sorry.

I'm usually too busy staring adoringly at Scotty.

We sang this song in college at a bar called The Phyrst! I never heard it anywhere else. Anyway, those are the arm movements we did. And, don't forget to put your pointing finger on your forehead for the unicorn.

Great, thanks for all your help guys!

Can't remember the unicorn song much (too much tequila I think :lmao: ) But RickinNYC can tell you all about the Tree Dance. :rotfl:

I used to do this at Bushes in Sea Isle NJ.
Yes for the geese, Humpy back camel you drop your shoulder forward which let you go right to the chimp.
Cats had ears on top of their head & rats whiskers with your fingers.:dance3:

I know this song from The Chieftans, and the Ren Faires Ive attended. And it sounds like you've been given the hand motions by everyone.

If I remember correctly for the camel you bring your arms up and make a fist with your thumb pointing back, then bring up to your shoulders and bounce them in a up and down motion. You them bring them back down arms bent slightly(bend forward) and twirl your fist in a ciruluar motion for the chimp. I think for the elephant we put our arms together in a O shape and put the back of one hand touching the palm of the other and then swung our arms back and forth... :rotfl: Now I just need to learn the tree song. My nephews love this song!

I don't love it so much.

I saw a guy with a guitar do this song at Raglan Road without the $10 cover. He seemed sort of annoyed that only the adults were doing the hand gestures. Maybe they'd all been to Jellyrolls.

The song was originally a hit for the Irish Rovers in 1966, but it was written by the poet Shel Silverstein. I've never heard the Chieftains do it -- not their usual style.

"You'll see green alligators, and long-necked geese, humpty-back camels, and chimpanzees ... cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you're born, you're never going to see no unicorn."
