Not that I want you to bash it here, rather, this thread takes you to quite an interesting website:

www.wakeupwalmart.com

I found this site via a full page ad in USA Today. I "think" that the blue box in the lower RH corner may be a movie download. The site is sponsored by a union group or groups.

Why would we want to change it? Just wondering why I should sign this.

I guess you would need to review the site. I'm not telling people to hate Walmart, just be better informed on the company you are dealing with. If you are OK with your choice then that is all that matters. But if you do review the sit and are currently a Walmart lover, maybe your opinions might change.

All is know is that at the end of the day, a Walmart worker is making more than I am. No sympathy from me. Heck even $7.00 an hour sounds pretty nice to me.

From the site:

Well, there are two visions for America: Wal-Mart's America, where profits come before people, and our vision, where people come first.

In Wal-Mart's America, workers are paid poverty level wages even when they work full-time.
In our America, workers are paid a living wage with proper health and retirement benefits.
In Wal-Mart's America, wealthy companies shift their health care costs onto taxpayers like you and your families.
In our America, corporations live up to their responsibility and provide their employees with adequate and affordable health care coverage.
In Wal-Mart's America, suppliers are forced to make their goods cheaper even if it means shipping U.S. jobs overseas.
In our America, we value U.S. jobs and companies that buy and sell "Made in America."
In Wal-Mart's America, women are paid less than men.
In our America, women and men are treated equally - fair pay for everyone.
--------------------------------------------

I would like to know where this "our America" is because much of what they say is contrary to what the work place currently is in this country..

I'll continue to shop Walmart, thanks.. :flower:

Oh duh! Blonde moment. :teeth:

I didn't see the "skip to homepage" link.

I am a former Walmart lover... now I avoid it... I'd like to say 'completely' but honestly DS got a gift card for Christmas and I did drive him there to spend it.

I used to think people that dis-t Walmart were just exagerating... but now I've heard too many stories, about too many of thier practices. "Gorilla Marketing" and poor employee pay are just some of thier questionable tactics. Just can't support them any more.
(And now David Glass is doing all that to our poor KC Royals too... what a bummer.) :sad2:

Just read over the "Why Wal Mart needs to change" article. Seriously, if you don't like it that much, then just don't shop there. It's a business, not a charitible organization where they just give people money to hang out there.

Some cashiers who started at Wal Mart when they first opened are now mega-millionaires because of stock options and benefits.

Got that right I would love make 7.00 dollars hour at my part time job.

You think Wal-Mart is bad try working for the TJ Max divsion of Homegoods. It take me 3 years to make close to 6.25 cents a hour.

Around here 7.00 hour is good money.

Sure. Up here McDonalds workers make up to $10 an hour part time. But I think the wage issue is the least of what to be concerned about. At the same time, what other comapny has welfare offices in its own store, to service their OWN employeees? Walmart does.

But I am more concerned with all the peripheral issues...

I have a long time friend whose daughter is a manager at Walmart.. She is also a single mom.. On her "meager" salary from Walmart she is able to send her son to private school, drive a new car, purchased a beautiful new house, and is allowed total flexibility when it comes to leaving work because her child is sick; attending functions at the school; etc.. Prior to this she was a teacher - and made less than what she makes at Walmart..

I have a feeling the site that I just visited is union oriented - and believe me, unions can put an amazing "spin" on things when they want to.. ;)

Would still like to know where "our America" is though.. I noticed they gave no specific examples.....

When Wal-Mart employees in Jacksonville, Texas, tried to form a union in their meat-cutting department, Wal-Mart responded by eliminating meat cutting in every single store.

Workers at a Wal-Mart store in Jonquiere, Quebec, successfully formed a union. But rather than negotiate with the employees for better wages and health care, Wal-Mart shut down the entire store.

One after another the scandals emerge revealing Wal-Mart's
ruthless campaign to prevent workers from forming unions. Tell
Wal-Mart enough is enough:

www.WalMartWorkersRights.org

You probably think you've heard all there is to hear about
Wal-Mart's misdeeds. But do you know how far Wal-Mart goes to prevent its employees from standing up for themselves?

When Wal-Mart employees try to form a union, they face threats, propaganda, discrimination, intimidation, and even firings. Is this anyway to treat employees who just want to negotiate for better wages, more affordable health care, and basic protections on the job?

New employees at Wal-Mart are often indoctrinated against unions the moment they're hired. During orientation Wal-Mart reportedly forces associates and management to:
- Watch anti-union videos,
- Read a section in the employee manual against unions, and
- Learn the number of the hotline to call if they suspect a
fellow employee of supporting a union.

Just ONE little part:

Human Rights Since December 1999, Wal-Mart Canada imported almost 70 tons of garments from Burma. Despite Wal-Mart claims that it broke its Burma connection in January 2000, Wal-Mart was identified in a Thai newspaper as buying garments from a factory owned by Burmese drug thug, Lo-Hsing-han.

http://www.wakeupwalmart.com/feature/delay/

And don’t forget the revelation last week about Wal-Mart and Republican Congressman and former Majority Leader of the U.S. House of Representatives Tom DeLay. Wal-Mart actually gave Tom Delay money 2 days after he was indicted. That’s right. Wal-Mart made a $5,000 contribution to support Tom Delay’s corruption 2 days after his indictment

Whatever you think of unions, people have the right to organize and Walmart sounds rather aggressive and evil in its attempt to prevent one. Best union busters are good employers.

Yes it is. I clearly put that in the OP. However if you read all the human rights issues NOT in the USA, well, that is a whole other cup of coffee. BTW, being a manager at Walmart is FAR different than being a PT worker. I used to live with a woman who worked PT at Walmart. And it wasn't by coice. She wanted FT work, but was mandated to never be allowed to work more than 34 hours a week. And that is what they did.... work her EXACTLY 34 hours a week... just so she could never get benefits....for 3 years!

If Walmart is so bad, why not get another job? I would never expect to get medical insurance in a retail job. It's unskilled work, in that you need nothing more than a highschool diploma to get a job. :confused3

As far as buying products from other countries, I'm sure Walmart is hardly alone.

I do my best to buy products made in America, but if I go to Target, Kmart, or most other stores for that matter, they too will be chock full of stuff made all around the world. Many in places where conditions are probably very poor.

I'd love to have a nice high paying salaried position where I could fight against this and afford to shop at Whole Foods and places like that. But I can't because I'm making $5.50 an hour and at the end of the day prices DO matter to me.

And you think Walmart is the only company that does this? It's the norm now - rather than the isolated case..

Take a look around at all of the bigger corporations that are now pulling the rug out from under their retirees and "taking back" benefits they were promised and have been relying on in their golden years..

Walmart isn't doing anything that a million other companies aren't doing - and some much worse..

So where is this "our America"?

I agree with C.Ann. It's so easy to single out Walmart since they are the biggest company.

It's funny in the portion they talk about how much Walmart costs taxpayers -- I wonder how much Walmart pays in corporate taxes?? Would be interesting to know.

How about in Nebraska -- you work more than 40 hours a week at a movie theatre and do you think you get overtime? Nope because they are exempt for some ridiculous reason. I found that out the hard way last Christmas break. Worked 90 hours in a two week period and got no overtime.

Conditions are crappy at many jobs, in many places. It's not just isolated at Walmart.

Wal Mart being an aggressive corporate monster is one reason why they do so well, and why their prices are so low. Most of their "negotiations" with suppliers and manufacturers include Wal Mart saying, "We will only play x.xx for x number of products." What they say is usually final too, because most distributors and manufactors know that they must sell to them, or face the problem of looking somewhere else. Wal Mart never has a problem finding suppliers for less. Wal Mart has been doing this years, and my father has first hand experience dealing with it (owns a pool chemical company that sells their products to Wal Mart stores all over the US).

The only way to stop their philosophy is to stop shopping there. Period. You will not change Wal Mart's extremely successful corporate strategy by writing to them.

Everyone has a good and bad union story. My point about the efforts was, they are aggressive and illegal. You don't get to break laws because you don't like unions sorry.

No one thinks WalMART is the ONLY one doing any ONE of the things listed. Walmart is one of the FEW who is doing ALL Of the things we do not like. Walmart sells "Walmart" versions of name brand products: Huffy bikes, Levi jeans - they make products JUST for Walmart. You guessed it, these Walmart-products are not the same as the others and soon you will not have a choice to buy the 'good' huffy bike or the 'real' jeans because they will not be in business.

I do not believe Wal mart is good for this country. I do not think people will stop shopping there, buying their cheap products repeatedly and filling the landfills with the junk. I do think there will be a day when this country regrets their love affair with this store, and by then it will be too late.

Aside from everything listed, I don't like hiking through a store. I want to get in and get out. If I want to go hiking I'll hit the park, not PARK in a Walmart lot! :)
