"However, testing showed the sisters had high intracranial pressure, which, if untreated, could cause frequent debilitating migraines and impaired vision as well as deteriorating brain function, the hospital said. "
Aside from that the twins were the ones that had to live life like that. The decision to have the operation or not should have been theirs alone. If they were willing to take the risk, and they were, then their wishes should be followed.
I feel very badly about the tragic result of the operation on these women but I believe that ethically there was nothing amiss. As a twin I can state with emphasis that I would have made the same choice and took the same risk.
I was very sad when I heard this morning. I was hoping it would all work out. They deserved to go after their dreams. And in a way I guess they did. It was just a sad, sad outcome.
During the operation the doctors realized it was going to be more complicated than expected. They gave the families the option of stopping the operation and bringing them still attached to the ICU. The family said no. The twins had been very clear about wanting to go forward with the seperation. They also told stories about how their whole lives they tried to seperate...trying to pull themselves apart running when they were children. So very sad.
This IS very sad. The women knew that they were risking death and they both said it was in God's hands, if it was meant to be for them to be separate then they would be. May they rest in peace.
