The truth behind the tree houses closing??

I hvae stayed in them. Definately no handicap accessable. However other units within the resort were, so I don't think that is the reason. I think that their big draw was the 3 bedroom home style unit. In the early 90's Disney started building the DVC resorts with all condo style units. I tink the "competition" of those resorts, coupled with the fact that they became part of the Disney Instatute Resort, drove the damnd down. My understanding is that they are now used to house cast members.

We stayed in the Treehouses, and loved them. I would have gone back again. The lower level had an outside entrance to a room with a double bed. There was a closet and a laundry area with a washer and dryer. There was a circular staircase to the main level which had a full kitchen with eating area, a large living room, a bedroom with a queen and a hall bath, and a king Master bedroom and private bath. There was a large deck with furniture.
We rented a golf cart for the week, and would zip over to the restaurant at the golf course for breakfast.
I have pictures of beautiful peacocks, which were everywhere.
This was one of our nicest trips, and I think that for whatever reason, it is too bad they are closed.

I want to stay in one of these so bad too! They look so cool! Our boat driver said they closed when Disney Institute closed and that they were going to go under refurbishment and reopen as DVC treehouses as part of Saratoga Springs. That was in May 2004

Yes! :sunny: This is where I stayed! :teeth: It sure was neat, wasn't it? :)

The Treehouses fell victim to the hurricanes last year. We were there in September and when we went back in December, we noticed the damage had not been cleaned up. Some of the units had holes in the roofs. Trees laying against the units or on top of them.

We asked the bus driver one day why they were not being cleaned up. We even talked about the fact that the longer the trees sat on top of the roofs, the more damage that would cause.

The bus driver told us they have been sold to a private investor and WDW could not force them to do anything.

That seemed odd to us that they would sell them, but that is what he said.
Last trip we stayed at BW so don't know if the property had been cleaned up or not.

You would think with them being between SSR and OKW, they would at least clean up the property.

There were lights on in some of the units at night and I think one day we actually saw someone coming out of them.

From the outside, they always looked like it was a neat place to stay.

Thanks for posting all the pictures! We took the river boat to POR this Spring and as we passed the treehouses the captain told us the were running into problems with renovation because of the Wetlands Protection Act. He pointed out trees that had fallen into the side of the houses that hadn't been moved and said even the trees couldn't be moved because it was disturbing the natural environment. I'm not familiar with this particular legislation. I know it has halted construction on a new site - but an existing site that is already built? Anyway, that's the news we heard about the treehouses.
