The Triathlon thread

Mike - stopped Urban Tri on Saturday. Preston's a nice guy - even though it was getting close to closing he took the time to help me out with goggles. I bought a new swimsuit and running skirt (both on sale). Like the shop - good selection. Now just have to stay out of stores until thru taper.....

So how's everyone doing? What's coming up next? So Chicago tri next summer?

Mike - What are the distances fo NAperville? Seeing as it's your 2nd tru, are you going full Ironman? ;)

Liz - COngrats onteh good buys! Preston is really good with fitting goggles. Scott had tried 2 pair and hated them, but loves the one from Urban Tri.

What's going on in Naper Sunday?
I'll be downtown at my first 1/2.

Good luck Liz! CDC was so fun last year. (OK, the race was hot and awful, but the WISHers were fun.) SHould be much better weather this year.

As most of you have probably already seen...I did get a bike!!! Yay!

It's a Trek FX 7.2 WSD. I guess it's considered a hybrid thought it can be found in the Road bike section and bike path section on the Trek website. DH and I got one. He'd much rather go out for a ride than a run!

I also just started attempting to swim laps. I think that will take some practice! I feel like when I try to take a breathe, my legs/feet sink and I still get water in my mouth. I'll see how it goes, but I may end up taking a few lessons.

Here's the bike for those that are interested...

I'll keep you posted. We did go out for an 8.8 mile ride and the booty was a bit sore for the next day or so. DH's was fine. Lucky dog! :goodvibes

Mike - you will so totally rock in the sprint distance! Thanks for the encouragement - it's my first one so little nervous. Just want to finish.

Stacie - Betsy had mentioned aobut the seats that have the center cut out. That's the kind I have and completely agree - far more comfortable!

Stacie: Great bike! I highly recommend swimming lessons...I was totally at ease in the water given that I am an enthusiastic diver, but swimming for triathlons is COMPLETELY different.

Liz:As long as you have put in the training time, finishing is in the bag...Look at it this way...once you finish, you have a new PR! :cheer2: :woohoo: :yay:

I wish I could be there to cheer for the WISHers coming in, but I'm there in spirit!

Mike

Satcie - COngrats on teh bike! I third teh comment on the seat with a cut out. Also, we adjusted my bike as recommended in a couple tri books. That helped a lot. My seat is at a weird angle, but it's where it hits teh most of me, so that the pressure is distributed over a bigger area. Still hurts on long rides, but doesn't hurt when I get off any more. Before, I coudl not run right because I hurt too bad. Swimming seems to be an art. I hope to learn that better this winter. No place for lessons around me. :(

Carrie:

Its hard to explain in writing, unless you are a person who learns by reading...I am more of a visual learner, so taking the lessons REALLY helped me. Basically, you want to do most of the work with your arms and save your legs for the ride and run. You are trying to keep you body on plane in the water...if your legs are below the surface you are fighting the drag caused by your legs.

I found a pretty good book called Open Water Swimming by Penny Lee Dean..

http://books.google.com/books?id=PJ...&hl=en&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=1&ct=result

Maybe you can find it in your local library.

Mike - I've done the training and feel good about it, but just have standard nerves going into new event. We'll just imagine lots of cow bells at both our events for each other!

Carrie - There isn't a YMCA anywhere around? I swim but watching tri swimming decided need lessons which is what I'll be doing over the winter. Couple places around us have classes specifically for tri swimming.

Liz:

1) You will do great on the 1/2...congrats on your upcoming PR!

2) Preston is the BEST teacher...very patient, very clear (at least for my learning style)

I am convinced I could not have finished the swim portion of the tri, much less put up a good time without the 6-10 sessions with Preston.

Mike

We have total immersion in Book and Dvd. Ummm...I think you guys forget that we are not quite as big as Chicago in my very small area. ;) We did talk to a triathlete who owns alocal running store. He did take a class, but it sounded more like learning through brute force. Very non-TI.

'05 spesh transition elite off of E-bay...just something about that color blue! I am a spesh man and it fits right into the rack with the other 3. Took it in to be fit and it is a whole different world. I figured it made sense to go to tri specific shop to be fitted by an actual triathlete. He got me on and took the whole hour. Had to switch out my stem and he also adjusted my cleats. I took it in to be tuned up as I could tell the drivetrain needed some attention. Now I have to get on and my first ride will be Sunday AM. Last Sunday we still had that heat and I dropped over 8 lbs. in water weight...so I was wiped! Austin tri olympic distance is in 3 weeks and those 100 other guys in my AG will be ready to thrown down...

Stacie - Definitely take some lessons, I'm sure it will make a world of difference. I would have liked to have some under my belt already but none of the lessons over the summer worked with my schedule. I'll be taking a tri swimming specific clinic 2x a week for 4 months this fall/winter. Found the class through my local Y.

Carrie - Have you thought about travelling to a weekend TI workshop? I know they are crazy expensive, but just a thought in case lessons nearby aren't an option.

Okay, I've found a duathlon.

http://www.siestakeytriathlon.org

They have an Athena division so I might could even win an AG award :thumbsup2

But...can I use my hybrid bike without people laughing? And do I have to have fancy clippy pedals? Those things frighten me. Does it matter in the transition area if you don't have to change shoes and all that stuff?

Stego...did you go to ATC or Jack and Adams'? Good shops, both, depending on what you need. I would meet you at the Austin Tri, but I'll be out of town. Think I'll sign up for the new Chick triathlon at the ski ranch later in September. My work schedule is conflicting with most of the local later season tris. Enjoy the new ride!

Mel....don't worry about the bike...the important thing is that you are there. :)

I just started taper today for Ironman Canada....yay!!! had a 72 mile bike/2 mile run workout. Other hard workouts this past week included 3 hour run, 4000m swim, and 10 x 1 mile run repeats. Now I can relax a little? haha!!
I really dreaded this past week, but I survived. So I'm very happy about that!

Mel - We did ours on Mountain bikes. No one laughed. You shoudl be fine.

lol. If I could fine a weekend ot go away, I donb't think it'd be for swim lessons. ;) Tough year adn fall schedule tends to get worse. :(

Ok, started looking at bikes and my head is spinning. Are there any things you guys think are must haves?

1. Start with cranks. I heard that a tri bike should not have 3, only two. Your thoughts?

2. We're leaning towards road bikes instead or tri bikes, as tri bikes almost sound fragile. For someone who's not looking to win, just looking not to embarrass herself, will a road bike be ok?

Mel - that looks like such a great place to do a duathlon! I did my first one with a hybrid and w/o clips. Believe me I wasn't the only one.

Betsy - wow that is some mileage! You'll do great.
