The Triathlon thread

Carrie...hope the tri suit works out for you. good job on the brick. I have one today, too, but overslept, so will do it this afternoon.

And like S said, MOST tris just have one transition area.

I think I made a long post way up thread about how I set mine up? Just remember to be organized; don't have a bunch of stuff you don't really need; and don't take up too much space, as there are often 6 to 8 bikes per bike rack and everyone needs to fit in.

yay for you!!

I didn't get an invite to Chicago either... :sad1: heehee...just kidding!! I don't live up that way! :goodvibes

Carrie - hope the suit works out well. Going to the store this weekend to check them out.

Steve - I'm up for a tri next summer and local is good! And how is Krista doing?

Sure I miss everyone last year since I didn't get sucked into this craziness until Jan. I'm doing the Chicago Distance Classic on Aug 10. My first 1/2 so bit nervous but believe I'll be fine. (I believe....I believe.....;) )

Was going to brick again tomorrow but with the heat/humidity forecast looking like gym day so may do it tonight instead.

Steve:

PM me your email, and i'll send you the training plan that I have used.

There generally weren't bricks after the long rides...the longest were 3.5 hours, and i generally got 50-60 miles in depending on hill/speed work.

Most of the bricks were 15 minutes after a 60-90 minute ride...I think they mostly were just to get your muscles and mind used to that wobbly feeling!!!

Carrie: From your commentary about your booty hurting, it sounds like you could use a little work on your biking form....ideally, you aren't resting a lot of weight on your gleuteus or hands, but you are supporting your weight with your thighs and abs...or in my case ab since I can only detect one...

Mike

Mike - thx for the info on the weight distribution. Need more core work - which I knew anyway but now just more reasons to get to it.

Ohh...that coudl be a blot of my porblem. That, and teh fact that I have no core. I must confess. DH is doing all teh tri reading, although I read some on swimming. I have just been hoppin gon teh bike and going. :upsidedow

I figured I should repost an e-mail I just sent to my family:

To Go Further

As a child I used to go to the beach, and dig a hole. A deep hole. My goal was generally to dig a hole to China.
Now that I'm grown, I realize that flying there is significantly easier.
So I had to find something more difficult to challenge myself with.

A 2.4 mile swim.
A 112 mile bike ride.
Then.
A 26.2 mile marathon.
In 17 hours.

Ironman China.

Haikou, Hainan Island.

April 19th, 2009.

I know we have others who have completed an Iron distance race on this thread, here's hoping I can join them!

Wow, Matt! Congrats on signing up! That's awesome. I've been going a little tri crazy lately (did quite a few already this season, and just finished my third race in three weeks today), and I've been wrestling with the idea of committing to a full IM. I haven't done it yet, mostly because we have a baby on the way in a few weeks here and I don't know exactly how much of an impact that will have on my training. The whole "needing to commit a year out because the race fills up and you need to sign up asap" thing makes the decision a big one. But If not next year, definitely in 2010.

Anyway, enough on me. Congrats again on signing up and good luck as you start training! Just from the shorter distances I have done, I have complete respect and admiration for anyone who tackles the IM distance (I know we have a few here, Betsy, Lynne and others). It truly is more daunting than anyone really can ever imagine.

You know what would be great? If we, as WISHers targeted a tri to do together (sprint, oly, half IM distance, or whatever). A mini WISH meet somewhere. I don't know if this is even possible, as we are all over the country, but what do you guys think? I know Chicago was mentioned awhile ago. Any other ideas?

Steve

Just throwing this out there, with my military commitments the "register a year out" thing was obviously a concern. That's one of the driving reasons for me chosing China over any of the North American races, they don't close the field until about 2 weeks before, and it doesn't sell out. Instead of 2500 athletes you have more like 250. It's still a branded race and Mike Oreilly is doing the finish line announcing and everything but I don't have to worry about getting clobbered during the swim. So I can train for the next 9 months and if I (knock on wood) get injured a few weeks before I won't have to eat $500 if I delay registering.

I'm actually probably going to do the WDW Tri in Sept, but at $150 it's extremely pricey for an olympic distance...

The other driving force behind chosing China is that the full week prior we'll be touring Tokyo Disneyland and Hong Kong Disneyland. :yay:

WOW, thats a big committment!

Good luck and let us know how your training goes...I'm starting taper week for my 1/2 IM tomorrow, so I'm T minus 7 days now...

Mike

Mike--good luck this week and don't do something stupid like I would and go out for a nice, leisurely 50 mile bike. :)

By the way, I meant to tell you--I realized this weekend that your Spirit of Racine Half is an HFP Racing event. I don't know if you've ever done any of their races or not, but they put on a superb race. I just finished two of their events, and I was very impressed. Well organized and a great setup (for the transition areas, finish line, announcer, course support, etc). I'm going to try to do a lot more of their events in the future.

Again, good luck this week and get some rest!

Thanks for the kind words of encouragement Steve!

I have been looking forward to taper week for 19 weeks...you can count on me to follow the plan to the LETTER!!!!

:goodvibes

MAtt - :worship: That is too cool. While I now have teh confidence that I can do a tri (which amazes me), trainign for my sprint has shown me that an olympic is not out of the realm of possiblility. However, it makes even a Half IM seem impossible to me. WO, that is awesome.

Steve? Full IM? See my comment above. :worship:

I'd love to do Chicago next year (the weekend is actuall close to my b-day and teh weekend I typically assign to me doing whatever I want). I'd liek to think I could go for teh olympic distance next year. However, I have to survive my tri in 2 weeks :scared1: first.

There was alocal tri this weekend. Scott and I checkecked out T1 and teh expo. It got me really excited adn really nervous about the race. Actually had race dreams, which I haven't done since my first full in 06. Of course, I missed th rpe-races instructions...... Anyway, it's getting scary close. I week to my taper. DOn't know if I like a port that only gives me a 1 week taper. :rotfl:

Mike - Happy taper week!

Matt - WOW. Not having done my first tri yet I can't even imagine that kind of distance. WTG

Steve - like Carrie said....

Mike - enjoy the taper this week and just in case I don't catch up beforehand - Good Luck!! I'm sure you'll do great.

Carrie - glad you're feeling good about your tri. You go get'em girl!

Betsy - consider yourself invited to CHicago next year! Know you're in TX but maybe can make a trip up.

I'm definitely in for a Chicago tri next year! That was my goal anyway and doing it with my WISH team - hey what could be better!

yay, Matt!! Sounds Awesome!! Keep us posted on if you can go, how's the training going, etc. I'm not very good at it, but I'm about to be at my 7th IM start line, so if you have any questions, fire away!

OMG, had my first trip to REI yesterday. Good thing my clsoest one is almost 3 hours away. ;) We plan to race with our mountain bikes, as we're not goign to drop a ton of money until we know we will do more than one. That said, I got gloves adn a new seat for me (that was really needed), handle bar ends adn a few gels and power bars. I love my handle bar ends! Tried tehm out last night and found myself using them without even realizing I had switched. A very nice low price option.

Now, to start training again. (Gone MOnday night and installed new toys on bikes last night). Our schedule this week is kind of scary, but we'll get through it. Not sure how if we are in MN for our practice tri, though. :confused3

How's taper Mike?

NOt that I'd want to be in it, but that's fairly warm fro teh big lake. Brr.... The swim portion of teh tri on our side of teh lask egot canceled last weekend due to hig wind. Hope yours goes of ok!

Mike - glad you're enjoying taper. And isn't our weather this week wonderful. Last night's outdoor workout got cut short and moved indoors.

You'll do great this weekend!

Happy Taper, Mike!

Have a great race! Be sure and write a RR for us!

I'm heading to Lake Placid, NY this weekend to watch friends do the Ironman up there, and get some good training in myself. :goodvibes

Have fun Betsy! Good luck to your friends!
