The Triathlon thread

GOOD LUCK CHRISTA AND BETSY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just know you two girls are going to rock the tri this weekend. I can't wait to read your race reports. Just know I'll be thinking of you as you swim/bike/run!! :goodvibes

I want to start thinking about doing my first Tri. I was at Barnes & Noble looking a books on the subject. Can anyone recommend at good book on Triathlons for the beginner?
thanks ºoº

Books- Triathlete's Training Bible by Joe Friel is the book to read.

However, while it has beginner information it is also written for use by the more experienced athlete so don't let it overwhelm you. Put in running terms think Daniels Running Formula plus Advanced Marathoning by Pfitzinger with a little Marathoning for Mortals thrown in. Joe Friel also has a book called "your first triathlon" or something like that but I suspect that it would be quickly outgrown.

Checking in real quick....

Christa....will email you that Alcatraz report...just got back from my tri out of town.

The race went quite well, except that I was totally limping on the run and it just wasn't a good run day. But I knocked more than 2 min. off my swim time from last year and I rocked the bike! So that's good...just need to work on my run, if I would stop getting an injury every time I get going faster. ugh.

I'm reading & recommend "The Complete Idiots Guide to Triathlon Training".

Aside from being (in my case) VERY appropriately named, it is an easy read, very inspirational & not "elitist" in any sense. It also has some really good training programs in it.

Thanks for the recommendation Jim...I'm going to check it out :).

Christa: Great race this weekend (read your blog).

Betsy: CONGRATS on a great race despite your hip acting up again. Sending some PD for a speedy recovery! :goodvibes

...not a tri person here, but I wanted to post major props to Christa and Betsy!!

Christa - I read your report in your blog and it was so cool to see that you could have fun despite the conditions. Great job out there, even with your helmet on ;)

Betsy - You rocked that bike portion for sure...just flying!! Sorry to hear about the hip...hope it gets better for you. Way to go though with an awesome time!

I have a huge respect for the tri people on here...good luck to you guys as you race this spring & summer...I'll be reading along in awe :worship:

Glad your race went well! Now see I am the opp of you. My run is the best! But of the swim.

My race report is on my Racing BLOG below. I now have times and all the exciting details!:happytv: I put the times in bold so if you just want to skim!

Christa-Great job on your Tri!! Your times were awesome, and the helmet fiasco gives you an even better story to tell! :)

I'm currently in week 7 (of 12) in the training group that is aiming for our first 5k. The tri I've signed up for in Aug is only a 2 mile run, so this will hopefully give me a leg up! I've convinced a co-worker to do this tri with me, so that makes 3 of us from the store I work at that will be trying this one (all first timers!). Two of us went to the pool for the first time last week, and I was pretty happy with my swim, considering it had been several months since I've been in the pool. I'm anxiously awaiting some nicer weather so that I can get on my bike some more....

I hope everyone is doing well---happy training! :)

Christa--great job on the tri! Your helmet story had me :lmao: :lmao: . I'm going to have to try extra hard to remember things like that. now you've got me paranoid for this season! :) Anyway, great job in those weather conditions!

Steve

Yeah it was real funny to notice the laughs everyone was getting b/c of my helmet...I have to say that I feel good I could make so many people feel like they were smarter than me in the tri.....this is especially true as I passed their butts!:lmao:

Hey Steve, isn't the Flying Pig coming up soon? I have a buddy trying to get a 3:30 on the full marathon.:worship: She is fast...she WINs her AG in tris....I b:worship: et she takes her helmet off in T2.:lmao:

Betsy - Did you do a race report? I would love to read it. I find reading other people's race reports always teaches me so much.

Been trying not to post here as it seems too much like committing myself, but after readign Christa's report, I just have to.

Christa - COngrats on teh great time with teh longer bike! rotfl! The helmet thing is soemthign I would do. (Another reason to question my sanity for even thinking about a tri)

Betsy - I'd love oyur report. COuld you send it to wtpclc@sbcglobal.net?

Ok, so here's teh scoop. Scott's been itching to do a tri. Of course, I just can't let him do something more than me. :sad2: So, I'm going to try swimming for real when the weather gets better and see how it goes. If it goes well, there's a tri in my home town in June that we might do. It's a sprint. 1/2 mile swim, 15 bike, 4 run.

Christa - Looks like you were ahead of the curve! Not sure if you saw Bill's post on the other thread...here is a link...

WOW! I am a trend setter! Really, I did not know I had it on...but if it had been HOT... then I may have not made the mistake. I have never done that b/4. Even after riding 100 mile, I knew I needed to take the helmt of....

they don't even enforce the headphnoe rules in races so what makes them think this would work.

I am bumping this page up .....looks like my last post killed it.:lmao:

Where is all the tri talk?

Hey guys!

Christa, I'll try not to leave you alone here! :)

My training is going along ok, I acutally just got back from a 2 mile run. Actually it was a run-walk, at 4 min run and 2 min walk intervals. I've started training with a girl I work with, who is a great motivation on my runs..she's done half marathons, and does a great job keeing me going. After she pulls me along in the run, I take her to the pool and make her swim! Wednesday I did about 650 meters with very few breaks, which I was pretty happy with considering I haven't been in the pool much!

As for the bike, Jen(my training partner and I) are both kind of agreeing that it will be iffy. I went on a 5 mile ride yesterday, which had some hills, and was feeling okay this morning, surprisingly!

It's slow-going, but I'm hoping that by August I'll be ready! We're trying to get all of the women from the store to participate in the TRI (and the fact that it is really short and women's only is helping our case!) I have found that training with other people is definitely something I need! :)

How is everyone else doing??

Hope you guys have a great week ahead!

My DW already thinks I'm crazy for wanting to do a 1/2 marathon so I haven't sprung on her the fact that I want to follow that up with a triathlon in the future...

As soon as I get a little more organized, I'll put up a quick RR from my tri last weekend. IronGirl Las Vegas. I only did the swim and bike, though, because of a running injury that I am trying to get better.
