The tragic dangers of old refrigerators and kids

If I put a refrigerator out for garbage I have to take the doors off, if Iput a refigerator in my own backyard I don't. This has been law for many many years, however if the fridge was as in this case, in my backyard I don't have to remove the door.

I wonder, though, if your yard is not fenced in could the fridge be considered an attractive nuisance?

Add me to those who did not know. I grew up in the 80s/90s.

There was a public information film about this in the 1970s:

I didn't think people would still have fridges so old that you still needed to worry about taking the door off- modern fridges can be opened from the inside, right?

I remember seeing PSAs telling kids not to play in abandoned refrigerators and my response was always :confused3 Who would climb into a refrigerator and close the door? I didn't realize that it is state law to remove the door, but then again I don't plan to move my fridge out to the backyard so I think I'm safe.

Hide and seek? I climbed into all sorts of things as a kid to hide.

We used on old deep freeze in the yard as a swimming pool. Parents thought to take the lid off AFTER my brothers shut me in there! I was also folded up in a couch bed and closed in the luggage compartment of the station wagon numerous times. It really is a miracle I survived childhood. :)

Gotta love brothers....

Yes, the newer ones can be opened from the inside. We just replace our old refrigerator last year. It was from 1959 and finally conked out on us. It came with the house and was such a classic that we didn't have the heart to get rid of it until it finally stopped working last year. Also, I think some people may have older fridges and freezers that they use in their garages or basements as backups. Those older appliances were built to last so much longer than the newer ones do, so there are still quite a few still around

About 4 or 5 years ago, a little boy around here, died after hiding in an old microwave. He was playing hide and seek with his sister and it was a really old microwave. The really sad thing is, it was in the back of his dad's truck for him to take to the dump.
