The ~Totally Unofficial~ 2008 Half and Full Marathon Thread

Hi NC Redding!!! Yep - 2005 was fun! I'm thinking I really may want to do it again.

I Lisa........Glad to hear the WISH team was looking great! Sure hope they are having fun and have an awesome time this weekend. By the way - Congrats on the baby!

BlueRoses - I'm thinking of doing the same thing. Ran my first mini (half) in May in Indy 2:24:30. Although after that run, I'm not sure I can walk a 16m/m marathon but I'm probably gonna give it a shot. My DSIS (who ran the mini with me in May and of course beat me) was supposed to do it too but now she may not be able too.

Abra Cat - my DH just started running 12/31 too and while he "claims" he's doing just the 5K he's also mentioned maybe the half or full. He won't go goofy though - he thinks that's just plain NUTS.

Hi! Count me in for Goofy in 2008!!! I did it last year and had a blast!!!! I soooo wanted to do it again this year, but we had a DCL cruise in December and between the $$$$, Christmas, and just making 2 trips in three weeks was too much (besides that, who wants to be worried about training and watching what you eat when there's all that fabulous food around!).

But I'll be registering Monday for Goofy '08. I can't wait to do it again!

Hey all! I woke up this am and was thinking about how all the half/goofy wish team members were already running the "world". How cool!:cool1: I had a 14 mile LR this am (running my 1st marathon in March)--I am definitely feeling the effects--however, my Garmin said I burned over 2100 cals. so off to find the ice cream! Have agreat day all!

Congrats on the run, Nucpharm!

If I remember correctly, sign-ups for the 2008 race start on Monday. I'll be picking the longest finish time possible (for starting positions) but at least I'll be early in throwing my hat in the ring. :yay:

I am so glad I found you all. I will also join the training thread, when I find it after posting!

I ran three half marathons several years ago, and swore I was done. Running really seems to mess with me, and I fight injury all the time. However, my daughter casually suggested that we train and go in 2008, and I can't believe how excited I am - especially to do it with her (and now it looks like my sister might go too!)

What is the pace time for getting Closed Out? (I read about this in an early post in this thread.) I am a slow runner. When I did my previous half marathons, I ran between 10-11 minute miles. Will I be OK without being Closed Out? :tiptoe:

I just bought Marthoning for Mortals on half.com. You folks have gotten me all syched up!! Thanks! Looking forward to communicating throughout this long process! :cheer2:

Disneyaholic--accoiding to the Disney marathon website the half marathon time cut off is 3.5 hrs. or a 16 minute mile--so you should be golden!! Welcome and good luck with training!!

I did the half in 2006 and came in at 3:30....just in the nick of time. I'm hoping to improve my time by 2008, where I'll walk the full. See you there!:cool1:

Hey everyone,

To all those who where in Disney this weekend congrats on a great weekend.

I am very excited about 2008 all the pictures I have seen of the 07 race look like an amazing time so I am extra excted for 2008. I was first planning on the 1/2 but I might just go for the full. I will decide a bit later. I think we still have some time before it will fill up

Anyone know when they filled up lated year?

DD and I are currently training for the Minnie....also very excited about that.

Have a great night all.

Kim

Kim--from the research I've done the best I can tell, the registration for the full closed the beginning of Sept and the half closed about a month before that. I'm a little concerned that the registration my close earlier this time b/c of the anniversary year--just have to wait for the cash-ola to be in the checking acct. to register;)

I am in debate over this.

Do I do the half in January or the Breast Cancer 3 day walk in October. (I think the training is going to be mutually exclusive) This year I will do one of them. I am debating......

Where's the 3 day breast cancer walk? You could go to WDW w/TNT, or another cancer foundatioin. I'm doing the full in 08 with TNT for Leukemia.

Thanks for the info. I think I will book after I do the Minnie. Should have a good idea by then If I can do the 1/2 or the full.

Thanks again,

Kim

The 3 day I am looking at is in Atlanta.

I did it several years ago and it is an AWESOME expereince. I have looked at TNT and have some concerns so I won't do that. Plus I want to do breast cancer and I have one friend battling it and just lost a coworker to the disease.

I am hoping to do the 1/2
and I am debating seeing if my DD-12 would like to join me...
we probably have plenty of time for us to get in shape ;)

It would the our first...
and I think it would be good for us!!! (she is your typical 12 year old lately:scared1: )

Mike:

Unfortunately, the age minimum for the half marathon is 14. My daughter was also interested, but not old enough. My wife was thinking about doing the Minnie Marathon in May with our DD instead since that event doesn't have the minimum age requirement like the half marathon.

Dan.

Is it possible to go from not being a runner, but regular walker to be able to do the Goofy with 1 year of training. Thanks to some other posts I have read I have gone from doing the 1/2 to hope to do the full to giving the Goofy a try?????

Yikes.......am I nuts??

Kim

Kim,
I don't think the goofy would be impossible for you. You would just need to be able to walk or run at least a 16 minute mile. I will say this about the goofy. You need to train for it. Don't take for granted that one long run a week will prepare you. When Christa and I did it in '06 we trained by doing double long runs (for example: 6 miles on Friday then 12 on Saturday) to prepare us for running two days in a row on race weekend. I won't say that the goofy was easy, because it wasn't, but those double long run days sure helped us. I say if you think you can do it go for it! Getting three medals is totally cool!

For me personally the running isn't the hard part. It's the time put into training that's so hard. Especially when you start adding mileage. Running and/or recovering from really long runs pretty much takes up all your free time. At least for me it does.

Thank you for the encouragement! I actually DID register for the full marathon, and I'm SO excited!!! I just finished my second week of training from scratch, running 1 minute, walking 1 minute, etc for 10 each, and this week I'm going to be running 2, walking 1, so I hope my legs can run for more than 1 minute at a time!

By the way, does anyone know anything about how to volunteer to help with the half marathon? There's only the 2007 information online right now. Thanks.

Oops-- also... can I register my kids and I for the family fun runs online, or do I have to call?

I just started running Spring 2006 with the goal of doing a few 5ks. After a while I got involved with the local running group who were training for winter marathons. I decided to sign up for the half. Now that it is here I am disappointed that I did not sign up for the full.

I picked up my packet tonight for the half. I will be running the Goofy next year, the marathon for me and the half with my son.

I say go for the full and remember it's not about the time.....it's about the experience.

Kim, if you're nuts, then so am I, because it sounds like we're both in the same boat, training-wise, and I've registered for the full. Good luck whatever you choose!
