Okay- I read a while back that I need to bring some special medicine/cream for some little bugs/algae that bite in the waters at castaway caye....does any one know what I'm talking about?

Actually they are jelly fish babies called sea lice. We have them in FL. It depends on the time of year you cruise. They aren't in the water all the time.

A product called SEA SAFE will keep you safe in the water from the sea lice.

Thank You! We live close to the gulf of mexico and went to the beach for the day yesterday- something kept biting us and reminded me to check this out for the cruise!

Does anyone know when they are more prevalent at CC? We are going in August. Before that, all our cruises have been in November and we never experienced sea lice. I'm assuming they will probably be worse in the summer???

Thanks.

A few years ago my son was swimming in Lake Champlain -upstate New York/Vermont area. He contracted a skin irritation from the water and we were told that it was lice in the water. UGHHH!

Took a while, but he got over it. From then on, we used SEA SAFE whenever we swam in non-chlorinated water.

Where would we find Sea Safe? I've never seen it before, but I also never looked. We are leaving Friday, so I need to pick it up soon. Has anyone found it at Target or Walmart?

Thanks for the warning!:smooth:

I found Sea Safe at drugstore dot com. We are definitely going to use it on our cruise in Sept. :earsboy:

Thanks!:sunny: I think I'll look at Eastern Mtn Sports in our mall since we leave on Friday. I'm afraid that if I order it, it won't come in time.

If you go on the Western cruise, the dive shops in Key West carry Sea Safe. I think it was around $12. We were there this past April.

:)

My understanding is that they sea lice are most prevalent in the Spring when the waters start to warm up. We went in March, armed with Safe Sea we purchased through drugstore.com. We didn't see hide nor hair of the sea lice. But the lifeguard said he has often seen jellies at CC.

Didn't there used to be a thread at the top of the page entitled "everything you wanted to know about sea lice..."? I'll check it out.

Edited to add - yep, it's there. Under links to important cruise information.

...and a product called After Bite will fix the itch if you forget to pre-treat...I've used After Bite on other kinds of bites, too. It works like a charm. I even saw it on the nurse's tray at Castaway Cay when I was getting some scrapes treated in May.
