I was planning a family trip for December or January (kids and grandkids). Even if WDW is open, we still have to think about the best way to get there, not to mention if we feel like it's in our best interest with the health situation.

So, I can still book a decent family trip (less nights with the new guidelines - using banked, current and 50% borrowed) but I am wondering if it's just best to book something (maybe at HH) for just DH and me using our banked 2019 points that I don't want to lose and hope that we can do the family trip next year (by banking 2020 and borrowing 2022).

I'm afraid that if I book a trip for the family, if things are not good to go, I will have all those points tied up - just like members who are concerned about their already-booked upcoming trips. Wish we knew what they plan to have open. I feel like, if they are open later this year, there will be smaller crowds than next year and everyone will be extra careful about germs, which are good things.

I feel like the safest thing is to book the small trip and hope for the best next year.

Which way are you thinking about booking your trip as your booking window opens?

I consider myself more conservative than others as I don't like to take unnecessary risks. If I were you, I would definitely try to use up whatever banked points you are going to lose and plan a big family trip at a later time. I know there are still many months until December/January and the COVID situation may improve dramatically during this time frame. However, it's really up in the air at this point and it's difficult to plan for the uncertainty. Plus, there has been talk of a possible second wave during the fall/winter, which further adds to the uncertainty.

That's my take and best of luck to your decision.

For me and my family, I would just wait. If you were to do it, I would only book the Dec/Jan trip if that time period of travel works out with your current contract UY, where you can cancel 30 days before and can still bank the current UY points. I would make a different reservation with the already banked points, and not have it tied to the Dec/Jan. reservation if you decide to do it, as the risk of having to cancel is too high IMHO.

Good Luck with your decision.

I think I would wait until the following year when things should be back to normal (I hope). In the mean time I would book the small trip for you and your DH so you don't lose your points. I agree, it wouldn't make me happy to lose points especially when I could have used them instead.

Whatever you decide I hope you have wonderful and memorable trips ahead. Enjoy! :wizard:

Thank you all for your responses! Most minutes of the day I know we aren't likely to go to WDW (or anywhere) for a very long time, but every now and then I get a glimmer of hope. It's all directed by the news, of course, but the enthusiasm of some on these boards who are expecting to go soon makes me wonder why I'm thinking the end of the year is unlikely. I'll probably wait to see what happens in June before booking anything, but I do hope to use my 2019 banked points.

This world-wide situation is still so unbelievable, but we are all living it.

Wishing for pixie dust and the best for all!

Based on all of these responses I fully expect the crowds in almost every month of 2021 to be like Christmas. :)

(Seriously though, I fully understand the question. Going through some of the same debates in our house.)
