The Sushi experience

I enjoy trying new foods on my trips to WDW. On this upcoming trip for the Mega Meet I've decided I would finally try Sushi. I always hear how great sushi is. For me it seems kinda gross but I guess that's half the fun of trying new foods, challenging myself with new experiences.

I think if I'm going to do this I'd like to try a variety of the assorted sushi offerings. I don't want to waste a bunch of cash on something I may dislike. I have found that Tokyo Dining offers different combination plates.

Can anyone give me some advise on which combo I should try from Tokyo Dining for my very first sushi experience? Are there other places with combo plates that I should consider?

IMHO, I wouldn't go to Tokyo Dining for my first sushi experience. In terms of sushi, it's pretty subpar. If I were you, I would head over to Kimono's at the Swan (you can take a boat from the EP IG entrance, boat from DHS, bus from MK or AK or cab/uber from your resort). I would start with an order of cooked sushi (I would suggest shrimp), perhaps an order of tuna and salmon and go from there. If you want a roll, start with a California roll. If you really want to do Tokyo Dining, just do their sushi sampler and go from there. The sushi at Kimono's is just much better than Tokyo Dining's IMHO.

I would recommend that stay away from sashimi and try a roll first. Rolls are what most people think of when they think of sushi- with the rice on the outside. The California Roll is a first timer rolls as there is no raw fish...typically its crab meat, avocado and cucumber. Sometimes its shrimp instead of crab. Based on their dinner menu, I would suggest the sampler, so that you can sample all the rolls, or the Spicy Combination sounds very mild as well. either way, I would recommend you try some sushi before you go, to get an idea if this is something you would like. Whole Foods has a remade sushi section with a great California rolls, perfect for first timers!

I'd suggest you go with one of the entrees that has sushi and some non-sushi items in it in case you don't like it. The bento box comes with steak, sashimi, a California roll, and some tempura. On our last trip I did the Ginza combo which was similar but with scallops instead of steak.



As other have said your best bet is to start with the roll then make your way to the sashimi options.

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but I've got a question on the opposite end of the spectrum. My wife is a huge sushi fan. Definitely an experienced sushi eater. Me? I can't even stand the thought of it, so I know nothing about it. Still, if I wanted to take someone like her, who definitely knows her sushi and appreciates it, for the best sushi on property, where would you recommend?

The sushi appetizer at California Grill was excellent but outside of that I can't say I've had good sushi at Disney but I haven't tried Kimono yet.

I have heard that Sora at the Gaylord Palms has excellent sushi. It isn't on property but is darn close. I may have to try both them and Kimono next trip to compare.

lol, I had to google sashimi. That's how much I know about sushi. thanks for the advice, sashimi is what I was thinking of when I said sushi. I'm getting an education and that's one of the things I like about trying new foods. I think now I will have to try all forms to get the true experience.

The best I've had on property was at California Grill. I am excited to try the sushi at Morimoto's in DS on our next trip.

I'm a bit of a sushi snob, because I live in the Chicago area & we have the most amazing sushi 5 min from home. My eldest son wants to go Kona sushi bar, but I'm afraid of either him being disappointed or ordering too much because he won't fill up on the sushi there. Sushi rolls or sashimi platters are HUGE at our local place. He's a BIG eater at 19. I don't want to go broke & be disappointed. I already warned the family they can get a sushi roll appetizer & that's it at Morimoto. I want them to try the main menu.

Opinions from people who know high quality sushi about Kona?

I will try Kimono's on a strip when we stay at BCV or BWV.

I would check out the sushi at the Kona sushi bar at the Polynesian. Its just walk up.

You\ can also sit down for a meal at Kona Cafe and order sushi, they will make it at the sushi bar and bring it over to you as an appetizer or a meal.

You can look at allearsnet and compare prices for some of the places that were mentioned.

If you never have tried it before and don't know if you will really like it then perhaps cost could be a factor.

I haven't been since it opened, we're on DL and Six Flags passes this year, but I'm definitely looking forward to trying it.
