The SUPER GOOFS are red, white and blue in JULY

Nicky - Good for you with the weight loss. I wish I had the motivation right now. I'm finally back on track with the exercise but it's the eating part that's getting me in trouble! Keep it up. You are doing fantastic. :worship:

Cotillard - Welcome to the Goofs! That's great that you get out there every day. I know you can meet that goal. Keep us posted on your progress.

Shan - Best of luck at Peachtree! I hope you are as pain-free as possible and have a lot of fun.

Jeanne - Welcome back. I hope you had a great time at WDW. I've heard that was a nice trail but my only stay at OKW was long before my running days! I'll have to check it out next time I'm there.

Jason - Great job on the back to back races. Awesome time on the 5K!

I hope everyone had a fun 4th!

AFM, my wife and I just ran the Run for Independence "10K" on Saturday with some friends. It was a small race we knew nothing about in Weaverville, CA. We were camping near there this weekend and wanted to do it. There was no information online other than a blurb in the local paper listing it among the festivities that day.

We met at the local high school and registered and put our donations in the jar as there was no fee for the race. Needless to say there were no timing chips, water stops or anything else! I turned on my Garmin to let it find us and got the dreaded Battery Low message. A few seconds later it died. Aaaaaaarrh! So much for keeping pace! :headache:

The person announcing gave course descriptions and saw I was pushing a jogger with DD4. He asked if I was doing the 5K. I told him I was doing the 10K. He asked if anyone was doing the 5K with a jogger because there was one point that was difficult to navigate. He said nothing about getting through the 10K with a jogger but I wish he had!

Our little race which I thought would be around town quickly left the pavement and after about half a mile, made a sharp right and up a hill into a tough trail run. Yes, a trail run. Through most of it, the trail was so narrow, both tires were on the dried grass on either side of the narrow trail. I couldn't have run this pushing the jogger if I had wanted to so I walked most of it. There were also three streams to cross and I had my daughter get out, helped her across, and then carried the jogger across. I couldn't believe what I had gotten myself into!

It was mostly an out and back with a few big loops. Because of all the walking, we knew we were last. And because of the loops, we went well over an hour without seeing anyone else. Right around this time I noticed a tick on my shoulder. I thought it was just a bug but it wouldn't come off by swatting at it. Fortunately I got it off pretty easily before he broke the skin as he must have been trying to eat through the gobs of sunblock I had on. Scary stuff! :scared1:

We finally saw one of our friends walking back toward us. She said she had had enough and was heading back. My wife wanted to go with her and offered to push the jogger if I wanted to keep going. I did and finally got a good run in. About half a mile later, I saw people returning. I asked how much further to the turnaround and they said it was still at least a mile and a half. I ran through it and had fun. I did twist my ankle at one point which was pretty painful but I was fortunately able to walk it off. I slowed my pace and eventually caught up with my wife and friend who had just crossed the stream back (how is that for timing!) :rolleyes1

We walked the rest of the trail until we got back to the road and then ran back to the school. Yes, we were the last people there but at least the folks holding it were waiting for us. They said someone (I assume with a Garmin) told them the course was actually 7.5 miles, which is some 10K!

Welcome to the Goofs! (This is coming from the newest member - I think).

I am new to running, really just started about 6 months ago, but I've turned the corner and looking forward to my runs versus thinking of them as work. I should clarify, I walk/run. I'm at 3 minutes run 2 minutes walk now, but started with 1 minute run 4 minutes walk. The Wine & Dine half relay will be my first Disney race and my longest to date.

I know there are plenty of others who walk Disney races. SamSam is one I know of.

Have you picked a race that will be your first? There may already be a race support thread going for it. It's fun to get to know others who will also be racing and get tips from the vets.

Feel free to come back with any questions - this is a great group!

Thank you SO much. I have just today signed up for a local 5K. I will be walking it. I've never been a runner but am considering the Couch to 5K running program? I'm just afraid of injuring myself :headache:

Welcome cotillard! :goodvibes

My June miles were 46.28.

Got in about 12 miles this week, left knee just keeps nagging at me and I still feel sluggish. I hope this passes before the real miles kick in! :scared:

Running the Peachtree this Sunday with DH. It will be painful, but I will get it done. :thumbsup2

Maura, thanks for posting Saucony's response. What do you make of it?!? Are your toes still bothering you? :confused3

OK Goofs, have an awesome holiday weekend!!! :grouphug:

Thank you.
Can I give my monthly mileage, even though it is walking? I guess I can. This will be fun!

Howdy, there. I'm Todd. I'm kinda quiet round here because I don't have much to add, as I am still a novice at running. I enjoy getting out and moving. Lately its been hard for me to mke myself stop and get ready for work.

Just like Mrs. D, I am doing the Wine & Dine Half Marathon and am quite stoked. I went and cheered during marathon weekend 2010, and decided I had to be a part of it in 2011--just haven't decided what I'm doing quite yet.:donald::mickeyjum:goofy:

Everyone that I've had contact with in this group has been extremely welcoming and friendly. And I love reading their experiences.

Wine & Dine Half marathon sounds like so much fun. I wish I could go!

Welcome to the Goofs!

Thank you!

Nicky Congrats on the weight loss. Glad your training is going well

cotillard (I keep thinking of Marion Cotillard when I see your tag!) Welcome to the Goofs. Sounds like you a re a pretty strong walker. And the WISH boards have plenty of walkers who have done every Disney race imaginable.

Thanks for the welcome and for the information!

Nicky - Good for you with the weight loss. I wish I had the motivation right now. I'm finally back on track with the exercise but it's the eating part that's getting me in trouble! Keep it up. You are doing fantastic. :worship:

Thank you and what a great story!

Good evening Goofs! Hope everyone had a great 4th of July and is staying cool, I've heard about the record breaking heat in the NE. We've had almost non stop rain for the last 3 or 4 days. While my front yard looks great, it really needs to be mowed! Of course we'll take all of the rain as long as there are no hurricanes this summer as being predicted.

cotillard-again, welcome! What is your first name so I can add it to the list?

Congrats to everyone who ran this past week. And Jason, a 10K as a cool down?!!

The Princess 1/2 registration opened today and Disney has finally gotten smart by offering a lower price if you register early. I hope they have learned their lesson with the Wine and Dine and marathon weekend not selling quickly like they thought it would. I plan on signing up before the first price increase on August 8th. Anyone else planning on the Princess 1/2?

Cotillard - Welcome! I am one of the newer Goofs as well! I am currently training for my first race - the Wine & Dine Half Marathon.

Steve - Wow! That 10k (and some extra) sounds crazy!

Jason - Congrats on the 5k time! I highly doubt I could ever get anywhere near that time...let alone follow it up with a 10k to cool down! I had to laugh about mowing the lawn afterward as I have had several experiences in that department as well! My main focus lately has been making sure I keep my momentum, so I try to make sure my runs/workouts come first, but boy do I sometimes regret that later when it comes time to mow!

Todd and Mrs D - I will also be doing the Wine & Dine Half Marathon!

Maura - Lol! It really has been difficult to schedule workouts with all of these major sporting events taking place lately!

AFM, Is it wrong that I am contemplating signing up for a second half marathon before I have even done the first one? I got an email today saying that registration for the Princess half is open. We were already talking about going to WDW next February, so if we go at the end of the month, I can do that run, too. I have already been a little nervous about what will happen after the wine & dine when I don't have anything lined up to train for. I adhere to a work out schedule much better if I have a solid goal to strive for, and the princess half would give me that goal. Hmmm, still mulling it over.

Does anyone have any advice about negative splits? Is it just a matter of disciplining myself? I tried to start slower and finish stronger today, and while I did have a better time on the back half of my run, I was also much slower overall. The 90 degree weather (and humidity) might have contributed to that. Or it could have also been that the holiday weekend was rough, what with the gluttony and slacking off and all (I really have no desire to look at potato salad for the next decade!). It just seems like if I pace myself slower in the beginning I am never able to recover that speed later on. :confused3

In the meantime, I'll just keep plodding along!

~Nicky

I have been toying with it. There are worse things than a long weekend in Florida in February. And the premise sounds cute.princess:

Actually, the "early entry" price is what they charged for 2010. So in reality, they are raising the price by as much as $20 for those who wait.

Nicky Two years ago, as a running newbie, I signed up to run the 2009 WDW half before I had completed the Minnie 15k--which was my very first race. So no, I don't think it's wrong--scary, maybe, but not wrong! As for negative splits, I have no good advice (pace-challenged) and the only advice (and it may be no good!) is not to worry about that now. I would try to run even-paced instead. That is what I am doing with my current training plan (it's what they recommend)

Steve Wow...what a race experience! Glad you made it through. Especially hope you brushed off the tick with no issues. My BIL has a suspected case of Lyme's disease--it takes two weeks to get the tests back to condirm for sure. But in the meantime, it's not a fun thng to deal with.

Time to go....

I may go sign up for the Princess Half right now - gotta jump in!

Hey Maura,

I was planning on an increase for the Princess so to me, its almost like a discount if I register early. They could have just opened registration at $140 and waited till January for everyone to sign up.

Congrats to everyone doing the Princess. Unfortunately, there are no more WDW trips for me until Goofy 2012. We will hopefully make it to Disneyland 2-3 times by then to help make up for it.

Good luck to all the Princesses here! :thumbsup2

Suzanne, we are also planning on DL summer of 2012! We want to go once everything has been finished out there. DH has miles for three tickets, we just need to pay for one more! :woohoo:

Jeanne, glad you had a nice trip! It is always sooo hard coming home. :sad1:

Jason, that is quite an impressive 5K! Congrats! :worship:

Steve, sorry about the tick! I can't stand those things! I had a cousin get really, really ill from one so I'm glad you spotted it!

Sooo, Peachtree was fun. We were a tad late leaving for the Marta train. :rolleyes1 Once we got to the station the train was full, so we had to squeeze in by the door. I looked around and noticed everyone's bibs were a much later corral than mine. :lmao: Once we got off it was a crawl to the start. I had to stop for the potty and that was when they started singing the National Anthem and had the fly over. We literally walked right into my corral as it was moved up to the start and began running. (DH's corral was long gone!) We never once stopped moving! So, I guess you could say we timed it to the second?!? :confused3

DH scored a couple T-shirts along the course, I got blessed by the priest that throws out holy water on the sidewalk by his church each year. I missed him last year, so I made a point to run over on that side this year. I can use all the blessings I can get! I came in at 1:10:36, 37 seconds slower than last year and nowhere near my 10K PR, but it was fun. I guess if I hadn't walked thru one of the water stops I could have at least matched last year's time, though. Oh, well. Hung out in the park at the finish with some of DH's running buddies and then came home and took a nap. :hippie:

Shan, great job with Peachtree and thanks for sharing your report. It sounded fun!

Today is day 1 of our local Relay for Life for the American Cancer Society. My wife and I each ran our hour today. Since it's the local running club, they want to see if they can get our team to run the entire 24 hours. You would think this would give us the most miles but the local running store team always beats us. This year they don't have a team so maybe we have a shot. I don't know though, I was getting lapped quite a bit by the firefighter team.

My run started at 4pm and it was pretty warm and muggy out there. I didn't want to push myself too hard as I'm starting to taper for a half marathon next weekend. I ended up running exactly 6.21 miles according to my Garmin. The highlight for me was having my 4yo DD run two laps with me. She got a lot of smiles from onlookers in her little pink moisture-wicking outfit. She's sleeping good now. Let's hope she lets us sleep in tomorrow! ;)

I am a little bummed about my race next weekend. I'm doing the Napa to Sonoma Wine Country Half Marathon. I signed up a long time ago and my sister got inspired and said she wanted to run it with me and registered right away. She has been calling me a lot since then asking for advice since she was new to running. I went on two training runs with her when I visited and was really proud of her progress.

Well, she called me last weekend and confessed she hasn't run in two months and the longest she has run to date was only 5 miles and with that run, she got dehydrated to the point of having to go to emergency.

She said she is backing out because she doesn't want to humiliate herself out there. There is a 15:00 required pace she doesn't think she will be able to meet.

I feel bad for her because I know she is beating herself up over it. I'm trying to be as comforting and supportive as possible. I'm also upset with myself because I haven't been training as hard as I would had I been planning to run it by myself. She is about 4:00/mile slower than I am and I really didn't need to push myself that hard during our training runs together. Now that I'm running it solo, I want to go out there and try for a good time but I'm nowhere close to being able to PR. I think I will just do as well as I can and focus on enjoying the experience. I'm not sure how appealing wine tasting will sound at the finish line at 9am but it's part of the experience I'll have to take in! :rolleyes1

Even though I am not the target audience, I think I might too....:goodvibes

Hope to see you there Todd!

Awesome!!

Hope everyone is healthy and getting in some miles.

Any more miles to report for June?

Besides the Wine and Dine, anyone signed up for any non Disney races this fall?

Nothing at the World but I've got a pretty good lineup for the rest of the year:

Jul 18 - Napa to Sonoma Wine Country Half Marathon
Aug 14 - Hammond Trail Half Marathon
Aug 22 - Crescent City Triathlon
Sep 5 - Disneyland Half Marathon
Oct 3 - Rock 'n' Roll San Jose Half Marathon
Oct 17 - Humboldt Redwoods Marathon

I'm doing some local 5K and 10Ks in there as well. I register for the Big Sur International Marathon on Thursday which I'm really excited about!

You would change that to :rotfl2: if you saw how slow I'm going to be jogging/walking them!

We do have a lot of great running opportunities in northern California. I just need the constant motivation of an upcoming race to keep me in the gym and out of the Ben & Jerry's! ;)

I'm really envious of everyone that gets to run all the Disney races.

What is everyone else doing this fall?
