Nicky - Good for you with the weight loss. I wish I had the motivation right now. I'm finally back on track with the exercise but it's the eating part that's getting me in trouble! Keep it up. You are doing fantastic.
Cotillard - Welcome to the Goofs! That's great that you get out there every day. I know you can meet that goal. Keep us posted on your progress.
Shan - Best of luck at Peachtree! I hope you are as pain-free as possible and have a lot of fun.
Jeanne - Welcome back. I hope you had a great time at WDW. I've heard that was a nice trail but my only stay at OKW was long before my running days! I'll have to check it out next time I'm there.
Jason - Great job on the back to back races. Awesome time on the 5K!
I hope everyone had a fun 4th!
AFM, my wife and I just ran the Run for Independence "10K" on Saturday with some friends. It was a small race we knew nothing about in Weaverville, CA. We were camping near there this weekend and wanted to do it. There was no information online other than a blurb in the local paper listing it among the festivities that day.
We met at the local high school and registered and put our donations in the jar as there was no fee for the race. Needless to say there were no timing chips, water stops or anything else! I turned on my Garmin to let it find us and got the dreaded Battery Low message. A few seconds later it died. Aaaaaaarrh! So much for keeping pace!
The person announcing gave course descriptions and saw I was pushing a jogger with DD4. He asked if I was doing the 5K. I told him I was doing the 10K. He asked if anyone was doing the 5K with a jogger because there was one point that was difficult to navigate. He said nothing about getting through the 10K with a jogger but I wish he had!
Our little race which I thought would be around town quickly left the pavement and after about half a mile, made a sharp right and up a hill into a tough trail run. Yes, a trail run. Through most of it, the trail was so narrow, both tires were on the dried grass on either side of the narrow trail. I couldn't have run this pushing the jogger if I had wanted to so I walked most of it. There were also three streams to cross and I had my daughter get out, helped her across, and then carried the jogger across. I couldn't believe what I had gotten myself into!
It was mostly an out and back with a few big loops. Because of all the walking, we knew we were last. And because of the loops, we went well over an hour without seeing anyone else. Right around this time I noticed a tick on my shoulder. I thought it was just a bug but it wouldn't come off by swatting at it. Fortunately I got it off pretty easily before he broke the skin as he must have been trying to eat through the gobs of sunblock I had on. Scary stuff!
We finally saw one of our friends walking back toward us. She said she had had enough and was heading back. My wife wanted to go with her and offered to push the jogger if I wanted to keep going. I did and finally got a good run in. About half a mile later, I saw people returning. I asked how much further to the turnaround and they said it was still at least a mile and a half. I ran through it and had fun. I did twist my ankle at one point which was pretty painful but I was fortunately able to walk it off. I slowed my pace and eventually caught up with my wife and friend who had just crossed the stream back (how is that for timing!)
We walked the rest of the trail until we got back to the road and then ran back to the school. Yes, we were the last people there but at least the folks holding it were waiting for us. They said someone (I assume with a Garmin) told them the course was actually 7.5 miles, which is some 10K!
