Anyone have any ideas why the toilets smell so bad?
Ours was just downright rancid smelling in January! Thank goodness I brought Lysol -- even though that didn't hold up well to the powerful stench of the toilet!!!

Don't know, that's certainly NOT normal. In 10 cruises we have never had a problem with the toilets smelling bad. Perhaps there was a plumbing issue on your cruise.

Ours was pretty rank the entire time during our December cruise as well!:(

We cruised last March on the Wonder and had the same problem. There was a terrible sewage smell in our cabin. We were told that the smell was coming from the drains on the floor
in our bathroom. Hope that is not a problem on our next cruise in May!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WE have never had a stinky bathroom.. well if you count BEFORE DH went in ;)

We had this problem one time and we either contacted guest services or maintenance and the problem was fixed in a short time. You don't want to know all the details why, but they do have a solution to the problem, all you have to do is ask.

kpgclark, I don't remember the exact room number but it was
a Cat. 10 deluxe inside stateroom on Deck 1. Besides the
occasional smell, the location and room were nice.

Ours smelled bad after anyone flushed. I had heard people recommend bringing an air freshener for the bathroom ( I didn't), so I assumed this was normal. It was bad if you were in there, but did not make the entire cabin smell.

We were in a category 4 cabin, 8586.

ROFL!!!

AnnMorin and Buckaroo's Dad.....you guys are too funny!

we were on the magic feb.15-22 and the smell from our drains were awful. my opinion is that on occasion all of the water that is in the traps gets sucked out(i noticed that sometimes after flushing there would not be any water in the bowl)the purpose of this water in the drains is to prevent sewer gases from backing up,once the drain water is removed the smell is present.disney just ran the water for an hour or so and then the smell went away.

6600---Catagory six--never abnormally smelled on the Wonder.

We sailed on Magic 1/11 - no stink problems, but water problem on floor in #6574 bathroom. It was fixed within hours of contacting the desk. No problems at all in 6578.

Hey Jill, if it is something that we could possibly take care of without calling and waiting??? go ahead and tell more!

I had thought about running, or pouring, water to make sure the traps are filled, cause yes, as jpatrick said, I thought that could be a possible problem.

Also - everyone is flushing with the toilet CLOSED... right? I wondered if that had any effect?

Yes, we flushed with the lid closed AND our ears blocked! It is SO loud!!! LOL

We didn't have this problem in Magic stateroom 7568 in Dec. 2001. :(

In starting this thread, I just wanted to make sure it wasn't just us. I guess we could have called someone about it. Next time (hopefully we won't have this problem again) we'll know better.

JPatrick~~~ you posted exactly what I was thinking the solution would be... we have the same problem at school during the summer when the bathrooms aren't being used, the drains dry out and the sewer gases come up through,so we just have to flush them for a little while. Can't imagine why it would be doing that on a cruise ship where the toilets are in constant use though.

On the other hand, could just be a stinky neighbor!!!!! Only joking.

Crsndsny~~ we're in #7560 next January~~ good location?? From what people have mentioned, seems good.

Thanks, Jeanny :D

We went to one of the Navigator series talks with the Officer's and they were discussing where all the wastes goes and at what speed it travels. It was rather interesting but complicated to say the least (at least I thought). We have been on 3 cruises and this only happened on 1 cruise. In fact we were still in port when we called and the problem was fixed before we left FL. I guess it all depends on how the waste gets disposed of completely from the ship and how fast the traps get water in them to keep out the gases.
Don't ever hesitate to call for any kind of maintenance problem to be fixed. We have had to call on all 3 cruises for burnt out lightbulbs - minor, but annoying to me. I like everything to be in working order for the entire time I'm there.

It sounds like a cruise ship has a high speed, high power (suction???) system, that would be able to clear all the water out, including the traps!
