My husband and his dad are thinking they want to do this.

Has anyone here done it? How was it?

When I called to see if there was room, the CM told me there was still 19 more spaces.....how big of a group is it??! :confused3

Any input would be much appreciated! :)

I did it a few years back, it was great. Very informative, enjoyable. I would say max group is about 20. Here is some info on it........

I had a nice picture thread on here some years ago but it was trashed when they took away HTML code.

I would recommend it.

I also did it a couple of years ago - I was on a solo trip, so I went on this and Keys to the Kingdom and enjoyed them both.

I did it last February and thought it was great and very interesting, even though I am not a die hard train enthusiest. Our tour guide, an older gentleman(forget his name, ray or phil I think) was the one responsible for starting the tour, years ago. He has been a conductor for 18 years at WDW and had so many interesting stories and facts to tell. Among the things you see is the round house where the maintenance is done, you get to get up into the engine, You watch as they fire up the boiler and do their daily safety checks. You then board that train and take a trip around the world, learning even more interesting trivia including the history of all the Disney engines and where they came from. At one point, we stopped and had the opportunity to take pictures with the conducter and engineers in front of the engine. Again, a worthwhile tour to take. I am sure all the tour guides are good, but if you can get this gentleman, it would be great. I think he may only do thursday tours. Not sure though.

Thanks for the info and links.
Hubby is thinking it sounds good after reading your report Lancer!!
Thanks!

Think I will book it tomorrow! :thumbsup2

Anyone else?

There's a great photo tour and article about the Steam Train Tour at Mouseplanet - click here (hope it's ok to post that here). He did 3 further parts to the photo tour. Do a search on the site to find them if you want to read more! It sounds great.

I remember seeing your photos Dan, they were great. :thumbsup2 Hope DH and I can do it in Dec. ;)

I did it when they first started it. It was definately worth it. Back then when you went to the roundhouse they let you sit in one of the engines and you could take your picture while in there. Also when it was over they gave you an old spike from the tracks, don't know if they still do that or not.

We did this in early June. There were about 14 people on our tour. The first half of the tour was fabulous. We saw the round house, three engines in the yard at the same time, got to walk up onto an engine and see everything, got to touch the engine and watch them fire it up for the morning. They allow photos to be taken in the train yard. Then we left the station and saw them do testing and a blow off on the bridge. The second half was called parlor talk and both DH and I found it extremely boring. I started to fall asleep. After they gave us a pin.

DH enjoyed it so much that he's going on it again. I do enjoy most behind the scene tours and this one was probably among my most favorite (Seas Epcot, was the best!). Get a picture of "empty" Main Street, and then take a picture after the tour with the crowd of people. Our guide suggested we do this, and the pictures are a great conversation opener.

Thanks for your input.
DH did this last week and he did really enjoy it. But he had Jim, who likes to go on and on!! And we had a parasailing ressie at 11:00, so finally at 10:50, DH had to get up and leave! So if you are booking it, plan on being there past the finish time of 10:30 if you get Jim!

We had Jim too and got finished at about 11:45- he likes to talk although DH is a real train enthusiaist and didn't mind but Jim did tell us if we needed to leave to do so. He only finished up then because he had to get to a special train veent that afternoon. He also told us that one of his tours had lasted until 2pm. Since the tour starts at 7:30 that is a long time and lots of information.
