The State Fair opens today. The parade comes right down the street my building is on, so I go out and watch it every year. We'll go to the fair in a week and a half (Columbus Day). That's when I'll finally get another Dole Whip! :Pinkbounc

Some bad news though: The fantastic petting zoo is no more. People have gotten sick from other petting zoos, so the insurance costs got too great. That was always the first place we headed. Guess we'll just have to have our Owens sausage biscuits first instead!

Is everything really bigger in Texas?

I think so. I've never quite understood how Dallas got the state fair instead of Austin (the Capitol). I've been told it's because Dallas built the fairgrounds. Fair Park is very cool in itself, because it's full of Deco-era buildings that have mostly been refurbished.

Of course, after experiencing the unlimited rides at the Disney parks, it costs me a fortune to get the three kids on a few rides.

I'll be there after wonderful advanced calculus today ;) I'm hoping the one older lady that cooks so good will be there again this year. (she's been there for many, many years). :teeth: Free food....oooooh yea :smooth:

The bird show at AK was SO similar to the bird show at the State Fair of Texas that after the show, we had to ask the folks at AK who was stealing from whom. It seems that both are done by the same bird conservation organization!

The Mark&Brian radio show were just talking to someone at the Texas state fair. They were talking about the Elvis sculpture made of butter.

Elvis had an accident and most of one arm and leg is missing. The butter sculptor was in Tulsa working on another, but is rushing down to do the repairs.

O.K. I really miss it and really want to be there. When our kids were little we took them and they loved the mighty dogs show. If you have gone for years you will remember it. I love looking at Big Tex, he is something else and I always wish I rode the Big Wheel. I have to ask dh, but I think he rode it once. Oh, I cant wait to move back to Texas again.

The lady they spoke to said that the sculptor had made it and Elvis is whole again :flower: :dancer: I'm in California but our fair did not have anything that fun.

Oh! I can't wait for next Saturday!!!! The only problem is that the OU/Texas game is so early, we won't have much time to enjoy the fair before it starts. I'm not sure we'll be in the mood to hang around after the game because I have a sinking feeling it won't be as much fun as it has been the past five years. :sad2:
Oh well, there's nothing like having a corn dog and and a fried Snickers bar for breakfast!!

I haven't been there in years, it's a pain to get in and out and SO expensive. I checked the rates for this year since we'll be in the metroplex every weekend for the next month and couldn't believe how pricey it is!

However, you CAN get dolewhips there! We used to eat them for years before even realizing there is a craze over them at WDW. I tend to go for the tator twister thing myself!

Yes, we love the Tornado Taters...but last year we had had SO MUCH FRIED FOOD that by the time we got to that booth, no one wanted any.

Of all the fried things, my favorite is the fried green tomatoes.
Of all the dipped in chocolate things, I love the key lime pie.
Since we're a family of 5, we try one order of lots of things...everyone takes a bite or two and if we like it, we buy more. We tried the fried Twinkies the first year they came out...after everyone had a bite, no one really wanted more.

They just mentioned it on the news on the Today Show! :rotfl:

I am going to go! As a newbie to Texas I have to check it out.

It doesn't have to cost a fortune...unless you ride the rides! There are lots of ways to get discounts on admission. I know that McDonalds has $3 off coupons. I think some of the grocery stores have them, too. Other than the food, everything I like is free...the bird show, walking though the animal barn, etc.

Be sure to check out the parade they have in the evening and also the light show. They are both surprisingly good for a state fair.

I'm trying to scrounge up some really cheap tickets. I hope that I can talk DS into staying out of the carnival. That used to really wipe us out financially but luckily he has gotten a bit tired of carnival attractions.

There's also a haunted house there now. The old Phantoms Haunted House is back at the fair if anyone likes that kind of thing. Of course, they charge a separate admission fee.

You know of course that this means it's gonna rain. It has to. It's Texas law. State Fair = rain, Byron Nelson = rain. :teeth:

Now I need me a corny dog and beer.

You're so right. The years it hasn't rained have been the years when they've had "the highest attendance in fair history."

We've been in the rain, when it's 90 degrees, when it's 50 degrees, and everything in between.

I haven't been to the State Fair in years and years. (Living in Michigan is not always convenient).

I always loved the Texas State Fair!
