The star wars spoiler thread

It would be interesting to see an update since that was based on advance ticket sales. I don't doubt that males 28-49 are the core Star Wars fanbase and thus the ones grabbing advance tickets, but I got the impression that there were a good number of families watching the movie. Certainly that's what I'm seeing in my social streams.
agreed
also im wondering if JJ and crew knew this and one of the reasons they made the main hero a female

I didn't see this mentioned so I thought I would point out that I appreciated the way the characters were each dealing with issues relevant in today's world. Finn struggled to find the courage to run from what was expected of him and to embrace who he truly is. Rey overcoming feelings of abandonment. Leia and Han sharing a love that can never be reslolved or replicated. Then as parents, giving their child with the best things they could provide only to have his soul held captive by evil forces (in today's world, drugs). Kylo Ren struggling to live up to be Someone in the world (Millenial fame culture).

You could even go as far as to say that Finn's story has ties to Boko Haram. He was kidnapped and forced into a "kill or be killed" situation.

I would love to see the movie again to see what else I may have missed.

For those who feel like the plot fell flat, I can definitely see why they feel that way. I kept expecting to get my piece of cake at any moment. Instead, they let me lick the spatula. However, I am not disappointed; I am even more anxious for that piece of cake.

I have seen the movie twice now - once yesterday morning and again this morning! :D I really, really enjoyed the movie overall.

But...

I thought the end was the weakest part. First, could there not have been a different way to destroy the weapon? I understand the nod to Ep. 6, but still... And then, did it have to destroy the entire planet/Death Star? (BTW - autocorrect just auto capitalized Death Star!) Finally, I can suspend disbelief at most everything in the movie, but if the whole planet essentially exploded with the force of all the energy harnessed from the star, there is no plausible way that any thing remotely close would have been able to escape.

All this being said, I enjoyed it even more the second time. (Probably because I did not have a Wiggly eight year old sitting next to me. o_O) And we are having lots of fun speculating about Rey's parents/ancestry and what clues can be gleaned from her visions. And, I am sure I'll be seeing it again - maybe not until DVD, but who knows? We may not be able to wait that long. After all, we decided less than 8 hours after watching it the first time that we'd see it again!

Wow! Deep analysis!

I didn't see a mention of just yesterday's (Saturday) numbers. Does any body have them? (Star Wars second Saturday numbers)

Why are they already giving weekend numbers when Sunday is just starting? I assume that means they are just projections.

There are probably some Sunday numbers already with advance ticket sales.

They are estimates but the numbers tend to be very very close to actuals.

I think they were playing pretty fast and loose with astronomical facts since they seemed to be blowing up Coruscent without flying to it, taking energy from some other random star, and with the entire episode clearly visible to Our Heroes who were on still another random planet which I didn't think was part of the same system as Coruscent.

Even GL paid a little bit more attention to astronomical facts than that. Parsecs notwithstanding.

I guess that the authors of the novelizations are going to have a tough time making the astronomy/physics believable to any SW geek over age 8.

But c'est la Guerre des etoiles ...
It wasn't coruscant it was the hosnian system

I just saw it today. It is a very good movie. I would put in my top three Star Wars movie. I still think Empire is the best.
Love Rey and Finn.
Really love Poe Dameron. Love him. More Poe.
I am still not happy about Han but they did him right and respectfully. Lots of good moments between him and Chewie

Weak parts for me. Kylo Ren Oh boy. Sorry he does come off as trying to fit into Vader's shoes and for me he's not doing it too believably. Maybe this is a hint for the future. And His temper tantrums. At least when Vader lost his there was body count. (See Empire) Darth Vader came off as much more intimidating.
Snoke does seem he came from HP or Lord of the rings. That his holo is huge maybe compensating for something. (Mind out of the gutter, folks.) I think he's the size of Yoda. Size matters not according to that Jedi but I think that Snoke is more insecure
Not enough of the Silver Stormtropper. And I want to see more of General Hux.

Kylo Ren reminds me of Anakin Skywalker in episodes 2&3, not the Darth Vader of 4-6. Anakin was a whiny pain in the butt who threw temper tantrums, which is what I was reminded of while watching certain scenes with Ren.

Yes that doesn't help me. If Kylo ends up down a "ridiculously long chasm, (thank you Hoopla.) I'm not going be too disappointed,

Yeah. I think it's hard to find the balance. Anakin is a better character if you want The Clone Wars and there is much better understanding of the Prequels. And because of understanding that better Kylo Ren is actually as near to a perfect character as you can build. He's more powerful than he knows how to handle, he's a typical kid who thinks he is more powerful than he really is, and his teaching is unfinished. So he is an emotional, temperamental brat. A perfect comparison to early Anakin and about what you would expect of a powerful force user in the position he is in.

I'll respectfully postulate...again...that he was never supposed to be framed as darth Vader.

I'm wondering if we were watching the same movie.

And he pulled off the torment way Better than Hayden Christiansen on any day...

Really don't know why we keep getting "he was whiney" and "Vader was cooler"???

It's interesting that the movie is holding to the 55%/45% North American/global split.

Are other countries anti Star Wars?
Or do they gobble up whatever fast and furious trash Hollywood churns out more readily?

I never said he had to be Vader one way or another. But a few of his temper tantrums did remind me a bit of Anakin in Episodes 2&3. Were they the exact same character? No. He did pull off the torment better than Hayden did, but there were parts, notice I said CERTAIN SCENES, that were Anakin esque. Never said he was identical or exactly the same character.

Vader in the original series was cooler. But in my opinion that Vader is the greatest villain ever. I was referring to Anakin being whiny. Not Ren. I actually liked Ren as a character better the second time I saw the film. Going to see it again on Thursday so we'll see what I notice the third time around!

I'm new to the thread. I haven't read all 19 pages, but I really want to discuss! I've seen it three times.

What do you guys think? Is Rey the daughter of Luke? Han and Leia? Somebody else we know? No one we know?

Personally, I want her to be Han and Leia's. I read tons of the Expanded Universe books when I was a kiddo, and I loved Jacen and Jaina and all their friends. If she turns out to be Han and Leia's, that would mean Jaina isn't a non-existent character anymore. :) I know none of the EU is canon anymore, but don't you think the powers that be might have borrowed some ideas from the books? If we're looking at a Jacen/Jaina story here, Rey will eventually kill Kylo Ren, which is pretty dark.

My gut says she isn't Han and Leia's, though. I think she's probably Luke's daughter, and he sent her away for her own protection when Ben/Kylo Ren went bad. Why else would someone just leave her on Jakku? How would she know at all how to use the Force if she hadn't had SOME training? (Maybe when she was very, very young...) Sorry, but I don't buy that she figured out how to use the Force just by imitating Kylo Ren.

Something I noticed that no one talks about on Star Wars sites is that when Kylo Ren was questioning Rey and looking into her mind, he saw that when she tries to sleep, she imagines an ocean and an island. Guess where Luke was? Did anyone notice that, or was it just me?

Any thoughts as far as who the Max von Sydow character is? I looked him up on a Star Wars wiki, and it says that after ROTJ he helped Luke out a bit. I feel like he must be a character from maybe Star Wars Rebels. Do you think it is coincidence that he helped Luke out at one time and that Rey was also on Jakku? I feel like it may have been a similar situation with Luke and Obi-Wan on Tatooine.

My friends and family are not as intensely into Star Wars as I am, so I'm quite excited to discuss this with all of you!

I don't want to see Ren redeemed. He's dead to me. He killed Han. I hope Luke slices him up with a light saber, although I have a feeling he'll be Rey's problem to solve at some point.

You and I are on the same page with that one. I'm still hoping he trips into that chasm.
