The star wars spoiler thread

Ok, I understand the box office numbers as good but your telling me the movie did 57 M Thursday and only 63 M on Friday? For some reason that sounds low to me for Friday.

Those numbers will be finalized quite differently...there's some screwy accounting going on.

But they did estimate that over $100 mil of Presales were sold and that 80% of that was on Thursday...

I don't know how it all works out.

By Monday morning Disney will be throwing itself a parade in Burbank.

But no matter how much money this rakes...episode 8 is far more important as of now.

The two previous movies to tread this ground...Avengers and the dark knight...couldn't muster the same gravitas on their run at sequels.

Avatar sure as hell
Won't either.

You mean on the same day when the stock rating agencies have labeled Disney as overvalued and think the target price for 2018 will be $90 a share?
I don't think Bob cares much about what happens in 2018 as he's retiring unless the board begs him to stay again.

If those projections are what Disney is tracking then he won't be here for Christmas 2016...

Bank that.

He'll probably retire on stage at the premier of Rogue One

Friday is still a work day for most people.

You disappoint me...you think anyone who wanted to see Star Wars on the first day gave a rat's about work?

It ain't avatar or frozen.

As we have tried to cover here many times (unsuccessfully)...this is on a completely different level.
I agree. Think about the people who watched the marathon showings of all 7 on Thursday, they either called in sick or took off. I was listening to the radio on Friday morning and there were people calling in saying they told their bosses they were leaving early to go see it.

But most people won't care about seeing it on the first day, that's the point I was trying to make. The box office takings to date are huge, record setting but a large number of people will watch at the weekend because that's when it is convenient.

Star Wars has some of the biggest fans on the planet. If no one cared about seeing it on Thursday or Friday I don't think the Marcus theaters around me would be open 24 hours. I've never heard of any other movie getting round the clock treatment.

Not only that...

Over 2.5 million Americans took sick days to see the phantom story in the 1999. I don't think that number went down.

And other movies didn't get round the clock showings starting Thursday that are still going.

You didn't even have to skip
Work/school...you just had to sleep on your desk the next day..."business as usual"

I bring this up because of the lunacy frozen comparisons two years ago. You have no idea, peeps.

Just look at the licensing figures for star wars...it rules the galaxy like had never been seen.

Most people that don't care about seeing it...never will.

But with 8,000,000,000 people on this space rock...you don't need most.

When did I say no one cared?

I was responding to someone who felt the box office was rather low for Friday. But it isn't, it's record setting and the reason it's not higher is not everyone *can* go and watch it on a work day.

You said most people won't care about seeing it on the first day. Obviously that's not the case since they broke the record. This is the type of movie people won't care when it's convenient they'll go as soon as possible instead.

I think the Thirsday numbers are astronomical when compaired to the Friday total simply because theaters were running it on every screen about 15 minutes apart starting at 7pm on Thursday. By Friday they did cut back the number of theaters to make sure others movies opening on Friday got a shot at ticket sales. The overall numbers are still incredible. I'm not sure why people think Disney has control over the numbers. Unlike the parks they have no control over the reporting. On Monday we will get the actual numbers and I believe they will be pretty close to the estimates we are seeing.

Yep...had to make room for Tina fey and the 17% rotten tomatoes Road Chip ;)

Just got back seeing it the second time and I gotta say I liked it more. The similarities to 'a new hope' didn't bother me nearly as much and actually seemed more of a compliment the second time around. Definitely a great movie at the similarities at least make it easy to draw parallels between rey and luke

Yep...that's what Ima thinking in my head.

I'm sure I'll be there tomorrow if not then Monday

I mean you saw me in one of the other threads it was really bothering me.

But I think the fact you're conscious of it going in gives you better perspective in which to differentiate between the two and see differences in characters and situations. Gotta say the han solo death scene may be one of the greatest scenes in set up and execution in the franchise. So well done

I actually thought it scene was great the first time.

Really thought it was done well. The touch of the face was solo's most emotional moment from the entire franchise...

I thought for all his unoriginal flaws...Abrams did that like a boss.

The fall was great...he wasn't a corpse...he was a legend

It was a well executed character building. A lost icon who went back to his old ways and having fun (Chewie let me try that). A touch of class and purpose. Han and Leia separated but not by choice. And then a personal, non-cavalier ending - with the last act to reach for his lost son. Then immediately torn back to the movie with Chewie firing. Didn't linger, didn't draw it out.

Sadly I think there is a practical piece as well - there is no guarantee that Ford would be in a position to play that character in Episode 8 and 9. It was now or never. And it would've been a shame for him to end it as some cameo general flying off into space. I was pleased with it all.

As I said on a previous post.

I don't think there was ever a single chance ford would do more than one.

He got want he wanted...the blaze of glory end and a huge payday.

And he looked horribly old...frankly.
