The star wars spoiler thread

Im surprised people keep saying Christmas is a surprise. Christmas is a very heavily attended movie day - bigger than many weekends.

You know...I've always taken everyone's word for it on That...

I just don't know anyone that goes to the movies on Christmas. Except one demographic That always make fun of themselves saying "we go to the movies on Christmas"

I think the point was, if someone asked you what three days do you think made up the majority of advanced sales, how many would have put Xmas on the list. I would've picked Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

Biggest Thursday night - North America
Force Awakens amassed $57 million, easily passing up the $43 million earned in previews by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2 in July 2011.

Biggest Friday and biggest single day - North America

The film took in $120.5 million, outpacing the $91 million earned by Deathly Hallows 2, the final title in the Harry Potter franchise.

Biggest domestic opening - North America
Force Awakens is only the third movie in history to open north of $200 million. The other two are Jurassic World and fellow Disney release, Marvel's The Avengers ($207.4 million, 2011).

Biggest December Opening - North America

The seventh film in the Star Wars series did nearly three times the business that The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journeydid in its opening weekend in mid-December 2012.

Biggest December Opening - Global
The previous best was The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King ($250 million, 2003).

First movie to cross $100 million in one day - North America

Force Awakens cracked the $100 million mark less than 24 hours after it started rolling out in theaters at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Fastest movie to cross $200 million - Global
The tentpole hit $250 million in worldwide ticket sales in only three days after beginning to roll out overseas on Wednesday.

Biggest location average for a wide release - North America
Boasting a theater average of $57,568, Force Awakens wrested the record previously set by the final Harry Potter film ($38,672).

Record Imax Opening - Global
Imax theaters took in $30.1 million in North America, and $48 million worldwide after Abrams shot a key sequence that was on full display on Imax screens. Force Awakens stomped past Jurassic World ($44 million) and did nearly double the $25.2 million launch of Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Biggest Opening Weekends - International
Force Awakens scored the biggest opening weekend in key markets including the U.K. ($48.9 million, four-day), Germany ($27.3 million), Australia ($18.9 million) and Russia ($12.3 million). It debuted at No. 1 in every market except for South Korea and Vietnam.

And this movie still has yet to open in China and it won't for a couple weeks.

Ewan macgreggor came in an recorded a line for the movie...I honestly did catch it because too much was going on...

Abrams said he rode in on his motorcycle...shot some BS with the crew for a while. Recorded it once, hoped on his bike and rode off. Nice.

And ford made...um...at least 76 times the salary of any other actor.

Anybody want to join me in the "he's in it for the money" camp?

I didn't notice Ewan checking in anywhere. Possibly they scripted a "use the force" moment with one of the new kids but on second thought cut it out because it's such a hackneyed cliché? And it would lead to expectations of seeing the ghost family which is just too much for any galaxy, any time.

I think Ford looked great, acted great, and probably helped polish up some of his scenes in a way that improved the movie. Dude is worth it. Not that there was any weaknesses in this cast, except Carrie Fisher got shortchanged with insufficient camera time and inadequate lines in what looked like a fairly stiff, not well blocked out scene.

I think Carrie will get more time in the next movie.

I didn't dislike BB-8 nearly as much as I thought I would. Watching the film I had the impression they intended R2-D2 to be Poe's droid but the first act of the film is so fast paced they realized they needed a droid that could move. Without jet packs.

But this lapel pin thing reminds me ... I still want to know what is Bob's exact relationship to the toy company. Is it "more than just friends", or "mentor plus benefits" ?

He said "you're on the path, Rey" or something like that.

I honestly couldn't disagree more about fisher. She can't move her face at this point.

And ford...I honestly have started thinking I really like what happened.

Vox did a great article about why solo had to go. They spliced together all of fords comments over the years and talked about fords stances over the years.
I think he's pleased...so it was the right thing to do.

And honestly I want him gone. I think he still resents his lack of percentage the first time and did the Hollywood cool thing of trashing the movie that made him one of the most recognized people on earth.

If hammil and fisher want to keep going...let them. They should hate the movies more but seem to be more in reality.

You know...I've always taken everyone's word for it on That...

Off topic I know but I have always wondered why people get so up in arms about stores opening for Christmas shopping on Thanksgiving night because the employees have to miss time with their families but no one ever says anything about the poor movie theater employees who have to work on Christmas day.

That's a good point...never thought of it that way.

Exactly right. I don't know ANYONE who goes to movies on Christmas Day. The 24th, the 26th? YES, but not the 25th. Obviously, it happens but not around here.

...and I agree with you on the "Harrison Ford did it for the money" comment. OF COURSE he did. He said as much on Jimmy Fallon: "I got PAID!"

Because a larger percentage of people don't celebrate Christmas than those that wouldn't celebrate thanksgiving in the US. Thanksgiving is a holiday celebrating something from our history, where Christmas is a religious holiday not celebrated by all.

my concerns for the box office is, once again look domestically driven and what i mean by that is if you look at all time grosses most of the top movies are 30% domestic 70% international the star wars franchise has typically been 45/55
so im guessing 800 million domestic and 1.4 international

the good news is that no star wars movie has opened in December so i could have a longer run

regardless disney should be excited for the future of star wars

the the way the movie= ended i was wanting ep 8 to get here asap

That was a funny line when he said it. But I've always found the guy disingenuous bashing the character for 20 years after...when he was trying to build somekind of Oscar resume.

And then he did six days, seven nights and Air Force one...
...not to mention the trail of stinkers since.

Why would a guy hate Han solo so much and embrace Indy?

Because his accountant told him to. Just come out and say you hate Lucas...instead of bagging your own movies.

In the US?

What - 90-92%?
That's some very small minorities you're talking about.

I do believe that the 90-92% are people who claim they are Christian but that does not mean they are actively practicing. I grew up in a Christian home and when I was a teenager I went to the movies on Christmas day because it was not a big deal to my father and we were not allowed to go to our family's annual gathering once my father had custody of us. The movies were the only thing open in our small town so that is what my brothers and I did.

Now I don't celebrate Christmas at all so yeah on Christmas Day I usually can be found in a theater if I haven't used the extra vacation time to take a trip to a tropical island.

Well...we've crossed the line between entertainment and culture a little here...

Christmas...is hard to quantify in religious terms. We're kinda lying to ourselves if we leave it at that,
Don't we?

I mean...a Charlie Brown Christmas came out 50 years ago this year and they petty much nailed it. And it's gotten way worse since.

Officially: 71% identify as Christian...the 4 other world religions combined?
6%

I bet that other lost 23% are at the toys r us right now with the Christians...

Just because someone gives gifts on Christmas doesn't mean they stay home all day. They could be the group that is going to have a ton of toys under the tree and then go out of a nice family day thinking it will be lower crowds.

I think going out on Christmas is also big for the 18-24 year old crowd. The ones in college who can't make it home and have no one to be with on the day so they find something to do.
