Sashimi and a lot of sushi (esp. tekka maki) is raw. But very smooth and creamy almost to the taste. I love it! But it CAN give you worms if it's not fresh. I'll take my chances. I don't eat it often, and I do love it.
Ginger- tasteless?? are you sure you're talking about the pickled ginger (the pinkish stuff on your sushi platter?) ?? To me it's kinda spicy and vinegary. It shouldn't be slimy either. The stuff I've always had is almost crunchy.
I do believe they sort the garbage. Just seems like something Disney would do.

I"m pretty sure the plant you took a picture of might be it the dusty miller family. I'll look it up though and see if I can find it. Yeah, the pix I found online are dusty miller. We grow it in Oregon a lot.
