because it's considered homophoiec or can cause homophobia violence. Have you heard this? The first I heard was on The View this morning when Rosie(not a big fan of hers) started talking about it and how it could cause violence in people againt homosexuals and was expecting people to sue the Mars company(parent of snickers bars)

I just thought it was a funny commercial. It reminded me of Lady and the Tramp to be honest or maybe my "manly" stepbrothers doing something stupid like that.:lmao: I never thought of it more than that.

'Anti-gay' Snickers ad yanked off air

By James Welsh, International Editor

An advert for Snickers has been pulled off the air in America after it was branded homophobic.

The ad, which had its first screening during Super Bowl XLI on Sunday, featured two mechanics nibbling at a Snickers bar from both ends. After the bar is eaten and their mouths touch, the men feel the need to - as one of the actors said - "do something manly" - by ripping out their chest hair.

An accompanying website, which featured NFL players laughing at the two men kissing and gave viewers the option to have one of the men beat the other with a wrench after the kiss, has also been taken offline.

Masterfoods, the parent company of Snickers manufacturer Mars Inc., has issued a statement saying that no offence was intended but stopped short of issuing an apology.

"As with all of our Snickers advertising, our goal was to capture the attention of our core Snickers consumer, primarily 18-to-24-year-old adult males," Masterfoods spokesperson Alice Nathanson told the New York Times. "Feedback from our target consumers has been positive, and many media and Web site commentators on this year’s Super Bowl lineup ranked the commercial among this year’s best. We know that humor is highly subjective and we understand that some consumers have found the commercial offensive. Clearly that was not our intent. We do not plan to continue the ad on television or on our Web site."

The response was heavily criticised by gay rights organisations.

"The makers of Snickers and its parent company at Mars should know better," said Human Rights Campaign president Joe Solmonese. "If they have any questions about why the ad isn’t funny, we can help put them in touch with any number of GLBT Americans who have suffered hate crimes. This type of jeering from professional sports figures at the sight of two men kissing fuels the kind of anti-gay bullying that haunts countless gay and lesbian school children on playgrounds all across the country. Eighty-four percent of GLBT students report being verbally harassed at school, and this type of ad only reinforces that. Is Snickers suggesting that people who eat their candy bars are cavemen? It’s an odd market to court, particularly after the Isaiah Washington flap a couple weeks ago, which clearly showed that there’s a strong distaste out there for people who portray themselves as anti-gay or holding on to old prejudices and stereotypes."

I thought it was pretty homophobic, and did not like it one bit, but I don't support it being banned because it might incite violence. :rolleyes1

Yeah I just thought it was a terrible commercial. Yeah 2 old fat white guys kissing, that really makes me want to run out and grab a snickers bar.

Awwww come on, that's sexy! :rotfl2:
I sorta feel bad for the adman who pitched THAT one. My guess is he's already lost his job.

As soon as I saw it, my immediate reaction was that it was inappropriate and homophobic. I even commented to the other people in the room and everyone agreed. Poor taste.

I did think it came off as slightly homophobic. I do think it should be pulled, but because it was a stupid commercial and not because it will encourage violence.

As soon as I saw it I thought it was not funny, homophobic and stupid. They should fire their ad agency who came up with that idea.

Heterosexual men tend to get skeeved out at the thought of kissing other men, so I don't think it's homophobic. I just think it's a dumb commercial.

ok, the commercial was just stupid but this

let's just file that under the

I agree. I just thought it was a stupid commercial. Not funny and didn't make me want a Snickers bar.

I think the company may have forgotten that not everyone who watches the Super Bowl is a homophobic man. I watched with a group of eight, and most of us groaned or gave it a OMG. The gay man in the group, a big sports fan BTW, didn't like it a bit.

Stupid concept that an executive at the Mars company should have rejected.

I thought it was the stupidest commercial I had ever seen, and not even funny.

Who reaches out and starts biting off the end of a Snickers bar in mid-air? It wasn't even plausible.

It reminds me of those idiots in the phone commercial who sing "Stop the Catbox" instead of "Rock the Casbah" - when Duh! they'd have had to know the name of the song to download it onto the phone.

But anyway, I think this part:
An accompanying website, which featured NFL players laughing at the two men kissing and gave viewers the option to have one of the men beat the other with a wrench after the kiss, has also been taken offline.

is what caused the problem with the idea of inciting violence. It's not funny to beat people with wrenches.

My old boss is a gay man and you should have seen the looks on his face when the prospect of being with a woman would arise. He was totally grossed out. Different strokes for different folks. I don't think it is necessarily homophobic. Unless my boss is heterophobic.

I do agree with this. There was also an option to slam the guys head under the hood of the car.

I didn't really like the ad (though I didn't hate it), but homophobic? Please... More ridiculous PC nonsense.

Gosh - I feel like a Jerk. I only saw about 15 minutes of the SB and during that time this commercial came on and I thought it was funny and I laughed at it.

I didn't really think about the phobic nature of it until this thread came out???????

I feel much worse for the dolt he pitched it to who bought it.

Yeah thats what I was thinking, the ad man, the ad company and the exec at Mars that went with it probably all are getting canned.

I'm not the least bit homophobic, for I feel if you want to be gay, be gay, its a free country, but if you are going to do a gay commercial or whatever, at least use attractive people. I wasn't offended because I'm anti gay, I was offended because watching 2 ugly fat white guys kiss is just a turn off gay or straight.

Now if it would have been say Christina Augulera and Brittney Spears kissing over a snickers bar, I'd be munching on one right now.:thumbsup2
