I'm a bit late in posting this, but I wanted to share with y'all what our server explained to us in great detail when we cruised the Magic a couple weeks ago.

I asked about the Mickey Bars because they were still on the kid's menu, and on the first night he explained they were substituting Mickey Ice Cream Sandwiches right now because of a shortage. Since this was my first cruise and I'd read here about the bars, I didn't press him.

Two nights later I asked him about them again, and he said "Ok. Don't tell anyone and I'll give you the scoop". LOL :) He told me there was a recall of some bars for some reason that he wasn't aware of, and that they had to destroy/return a ton of bars. That left them with a dire shortage of bars, although they had "a few" that were from the prior shipment (in other words, not affected by the recall).

He said they had been instructed to tell everyone that they had no mickey bars, and to instead push the sandwiches. That they were really saving the mickey bars to make some magic, in other words, they were giving them out to kids who cried because they couldn't have their mickey bar, etc.

I told him that I'd heard that these bars were supposedly fantastic and I had been waiting to try one, and at that point he winked at me and later that evening he brought me one at dessert.

Sooooo... how true all of that is I don't exactly know, but I thought you'd be interested to know what my server said.

I don't know about you, but I wouldn't be pleased if they gave my child one just because they cried. I think that sends the wrong message and encourages kids to cry every time they want something they can't have. They should treat all kids equally and I wouldn't be impressed to see another child miss out because they didn't cry. I hope Disney doesn't do this when my family cruise (long time yet). :confused3

Glad you were able to have one, but I sure hope you didn't have to cry to get it. ;)

Ours told us it was because there is less damage during transportation and storage with the sandwiches versus the chocolate coating on the bars so less waste.

I think the real issue here is you are eating at restaurants with food comparable to a five star restaurants (with desserts to match) and you are trying to eat an ice cream bar. From my experience, there are so many desserts that are way better than the Mickey Bars

It might not be that they are saving them for when kids cry, but possibly for kids who can't have the sandwiches because of gluten or allergy issues and such. I'm pretty sure that the Mickey bars are nut free, not so sure about the sandwiches. The sandwiches definately wouldn't be gluten free. Just guessing on this one. If they had some, but not enough for everyone, they were probably not telling everyone about them to conserve them for those special occasions when they were really necessary.

I would hope this was the case as our DD can't eat the mickey sandwiches because she is allergic to wheat. She really looks forward to the Mickey bars as those are one of the few sweets she can enjoy on the ship. I'll take a sandwich though! :thumbsup2

Mickey Bars are offered on the kids' menu which has options like chicken strips, pizza, hamburgers, etc. In that case, an ice cream bar (or ice cream sandwich) is in line with the menu choices.

Just as kids can order from the adult menu, adults can order from the children's menu so chicken strips, Mickey Bars, escargot and souffle are available to all. :woohoo:

I can't eat the sandwiches either because I can't eat the wheat. I hope they fix this issue!

They are back on the ships so I doubt this is true.

Most of the dessert menus had an ice cream sundae listed. Not really 5 star restaurant fare.

It was reported here on the DIS that they are already back on all the ships. There is no "issue" to fix. The reports were that it was an issue with the supplier and what the OP is saying backs that up. I would not doubt for a second that a recall is the exact reason they were gone for a short while.

Well, this I would happily accept. I would be happy to explain to my kids if they were being saved for restricted diets, as I do think it is nice for children with food intolerance to be able to enjoy something nice. :)

My 3 year old is allergic, too! It would be awful if my 5 year old got a frozen Mickey treat (he would love the sandwich!) and the 3 year old did not get anything comparable. I have not noticed a shortage at WDW lately, so hopefully this is all resolved shortly.

We just got back from the Dream two weeks ago and my daughter has a wheat allergy. The head server came and talked to us every night and the chef prepared her a special dessert that wasn't on the menu each night. She enjoyed each and every one of them. So I am sure your 3 yo will be taken care off each day.

I am sorry, but their food is NOOOO comparison to a five star restaurant. And frankly, I am no ice cream lover, but those bars are way better than a lot of the desserts. That is jut my opinion. I don't think I have ever heard anyone compare the dining room food to a five star restaurant though.
