The Running Thread - 2026

It’s the perfect day for a PR!

Today was the Get in Gear 5k in Minneapolis. I’ve run this race 3 times and I PR’d the 5k here last year. I’d been watching the weather all week, temps looked to be perfect but with a chance of rain. It ended up being 45 degrees, cloudy with a tiny bit of drizzle and no wind…perfection! We had a leisurely morning and took the light rail in. We made it just in time for bib pick up, bathroom visit and to drop a gear bag and then into the corral we went.

Things have been clicking for me so I was optimistic that I could run a 29:00 if conditions were perfect, see above! Last year I ran a 29:31 and I almost died but today we try for better. Easy downhill start and mile 1 was at 9:21. I was shooting for 9:30 so a little hot. Mile 2 is pretty flat like most of the course, it involves the turn around for the out and back. Still feeling good, it came in at 9:17. Course is a bit narrower on the last stretch but still cruising along, mile 3 at 9:04. The slight uphill finish I punched at 8:46!

Finished at 28:54! Thrilled with my time, felt really strong and probably left some out on the course but I feel like this may have been the race I’ve run the best.

It can be difficult—this year there was a waitlist of 2,000. I think it was a couple of tries before I got in. As @The Expert noted, flexibility can be helpful. You’re unlikely to get bib distribution, e.g., vs Gear Check shift 1.

There is also now an option to sign up as a group. Maybe next year we can try for a disboards group. I have volunteered for 5 years now…..maybe that would help get a group in.
I’m absolutely on board for a volunteer group!!!

Anyone doing the Indy mini next weekend? It will be my second year doing it. It is hands down one of my favorite races I’ve done!!! Running in the Indianapolis motor speedway and stopping to “kiss” the bricks is beyond amazing!!

And…Funny enough…just found out that our favorite rD announcer, Carissa Galloway, will be the announcer for this years race.

Amazing splits! 5Ks are very tough to pace and you smashed it out of the park.

Can you imagine running a sub-2:00 marathon and losing the race?! Incredible!!
That was my thought too!

Adidas paid for 6 months of voluntary drug testing in the lead up for Sawe to race in the Pro Evo 3s. I guess this confirms Adidas’s claim that the shoe is 1.6% more efficient than the Evo 2.
Between this and Nike's Boston blunder, Adidas is gonna sell SO MANY SHOES!

I've been tracking Cynthia Erivo, since she's running for Brooks and in my EXACT favorite pair of running shoes. She just finished in 3:21! I saw an interview with her earlier this week where she said her stretch goal was 3:15 and her PR was 3:30ish.

Let’s be real a second. The people upset by Nike’s slight directed at walkers are not going to trade $300 Alphaflys for $500 Pro Evo 3s. I just ran the SS 10-miler in Adios Pro 3s, and I love Adidas shoes from the Evo SL to the Prime X Strung 2. But I doubt casual runners can sort through the Adidas lineup to differentiate the Boston from the Hyperboost Edge. A forced error by Nike, sure. But I’m sure that of all the people here upset by it, no one runs in Nikes.

Sub-2:00 is just mind boggling!

I’m sure the shoes are a large part of so much recent record breaking, but I think we’ve also hit a new era of dialed-in training and fueling. Records keep falling by huge margins in the trail world, too, where shoes play less of a role.

Also, for any fellow F1 fans, Seb Vettel ran and finished in 2:59:xx!

Umm. Almost exclusively Nike runner for 15 years (only recently switched one of my shoes from Pegasus to Ghosts). That ad is just the latest in a series of tone deaf marketing blunders by Nike. I’m not going to throw out my perfectly good Nikes that are still in my rotation but I will seriously consider it when it comes time to buy new shoes. There’s a lot of casual run/walkers who run in Nike who are now left wondering whether that’s where they should spend their money. It’s also not like Nike was doing great before this mess. They continue to lose market share to other brands and have already warned. They’ve already warned of a weak outlook for the remainder of 2026 and into 2027.

Last I checked, Nike makes much more than shoes. I would wager that Nike makes far, far more from their apparel and lower end shoe sales than from their elite Alphafly line. That's where their marketing blunders are going to cost them.
