The Running Thread - 2026

I…uh, so, I knew I was going to go into this weekend and not be able to run or work out at all for several days while we do the last film festival here for, at least, a few years…I may have, i mean, I did hit the running kind of hard, and now my good knee is pretty ‘itis-y.

I took yesterday off and it already feels a bit better. It’s been bothering me for about a week, but not while running so I have been pushing through it. It does not feel great.

Le sigh.

At least it will get some rest and stretching this weekend.

Godspeed surviving the last 'Dance!

Dollywood course maps are out. The 5K has the same amount of elevation as the Dopey half marathon. The half marathon has over 1300 feet. Oh boy!
Yeah. I've spent enough time in and around Dollywood that elevation was one of my concerns. That it would be more of a hike and a powerwalk than a run (at least for me).

I am feeling a lot of rundisney fomo... I ran at Wine and Dine this season but my next planned rundisney run will not be till Springtime surprise 2027!

Soo I signed up and got into the lottery for Cherry Blossom 10 miler in DC. I am doing the challenge which is 5k and 10 miler.

Anyone else doing it?
I live in MD just outside DC. I'm not doing Cherry Blossom this year, though. I didn't know you lived in the area. Have you done it before?

For all the Saucony fans out there (@FFigawi) Feb 2 is the release date for the long awaited Pro 5 as well as the new Endorphin Azura. Reviews I’m seeing are “meh” on the pro, very little has changed and at 230 isn’t worth it but the new model is possibly the best daily trainer in a long time. If anyone gets their hands (or feet) on a pair of these I’d love to know opinions.
My real dilemma is the Elite 3 is scheduled for a June release. What to do? I planned on buying another pair of the 2s when they discount them as they are my absolute favorite race shoe to run in but it looks like the 3 might be even better if that’s possible.

Facebook popped up a memory from 15 years ago. This was my first Goofy and only my second ever rD event, and one of my all-time favorite race-related pictures. Right after this photo, I held up my inhaler asking Darth if he needed it. One of the storm troopers bonked me with his blaster and told me to move along. It still makes me chuckle.

I have a toe nail situation. Back in August, I got a blister under the nail of my right big toe during my trail race. Having experienced something similar one other time, I drained it immediately and it barely bruised. But I figured it would fall off at some point. And then, as the nail grew, there was this bubble-like ridge that formed laterally across the nail, and I assumed that a new nail was growing underneath. (I was correct.)

Well as of (checks watch) 15 minutes ago, the left side of the "bad" part of the nail has [finally] detached. But the problem is that it hasn't released all the way across. Meaning that on the right side it's still attached to the nail bed.

I will not include a picture of the actual toe. But here is a diagram of what I have going on. I need to trim some part of this thing off, but I'm not sure how aggressive I should be. As this is only the 2nd bruised/black/lost nail I've experienced in 5 years, please help me figure this out because I have to leave for a basketball game in 2 hours.

I would just trim as much as feels comfortable and you should be okay. If you're worried about it snagging or something while you're on the court, you could always wrap a bit of athletic tape around it, but I've never actually had that happen except while putting on/taking off my socks.

As someone who perpetually has 4-7 toenails in varying non-standard states, I feel that I am an authority in this matter. 😅

Gads, I find myself indulging in frou-frou that is atypical for me. First, the Brooks rD shoes. And today a MW 2026 sweatshirt just arrived from Etsy. And now virtual runs.
I'm not a big fan of virtual runs, and the only one I've done prior was for the Peachtree Road Race when I was going to be out of town. But the DW and I did the Ring of Kerry in Ireland in 2024, so this Conqueror's Challenge Ring of Kerry medal caught my eye and pulled me in. I like their format in that they show the course and take my training runs and count them towards the total distance, plus you can pull up a street view of where you are. So I went for it. Between MW and my training runs, I recently completed the 124 miles and thought I'd share the medal. I'm partway through a similar one for Dublin and surrounding countryside. Will I continue with this bit of bling accumulation? Likely not, but I did like the Ireland runs and have been pleasantly surprised with how well they've executed it. If this is something you like, Conquerors has quite a few themed challenges with very stylish medals. I may have to take a second look at the Valley of the Kings medal with its King Tut-ish pharaoh on the front and hieroglyphics on the back...

I had this exact situation after MW in 2023. I trimmed the lifting side (left) pretty aggressively as soon as it lifted. Do it a bit at a time until you are comfortable. The remaining side (right) as well as the new nail underneath gave enough protection for the nail bed. You also might want to put a band aid over it after you trim it for your game until you are used to it.

As someone who has had this issue many times over the years, I concur with WillRunForPizza. Since I went up yet another half a size in shoes, my toenails are doing way better. Nary a toenail issue after Dopey, which feels like a miracle!
