The Running Thread --2025

Happy birthday @The Expert!

ATTQOTD: I finished my first marathon! And didn’t let it deter me from signing up for my second.

But my real accomplishment was getting a half marathon PR at a race I wasn’t planning to actually race, but the weather was on my side so I decided to go for it. I almost hit my magic mile predicted time and felt strong during the entire race.

Lesson learned is that outside stress greatly affects my running and I need to take care of my mental health. It’s a double-edged sword because running helps my mental health, so I can’t stop running, but need to focus on rest and recovery and fueling.

Well, don't know if I just did something I will regret. LOL. Just signed up to do a full Iron Man. For years I had been talking about doing an IM. My office is literally on the course for IM Texas. So every year when I would run at lunch, I would get FOMO watching all the festivities going on. This past year I decided to really dive into training for triathlons. Did a couple of sprints over the summer, then did a half IM this past October. I kept on training like I was going to do a full IM. I was actually waiting to get through WDW MW to decide if I wanted to keep going for a full IM. I heard registration was getting near capacity so I went to the website to register and it showed general registration was sold out. Started kicking myself in the butt for dragging my feet. Today, I went to the IM TX website just to look at details and saw they opened up 300 spots. I registered without hesitation.

So now I have grueling 4 months ahead of me (April 15th race day). Good thing is, with MW, DL HM, and Princess HM, I will at least have the running portion covered. LOL.

ATTQOTD: I'm very happy to see the end of 2025 from a running perspective. A hamstring injury cost me my first DNF in a non-ultra during Marathon Weekend/Dopey and spiraled into missing 2 1/2 months of running as it stubbornly refused to heal. I haven't been able to fully get back to fitness due to the weight I gained coupled with the heat and humidity as I tried to get ramped back up over the summer. This will be the first time in my 11 year running career that I won't surpass 1,000 miles for the year. The only redeeming thing was completing my 17th marathon in October to extend my streak of running a marathon or longer to 10 years. Here's to hoping for a better 2026!

ATTQOTD: Biggest accomplishment was definitely winning 1st place overall female at my trail half marathon in September. Biggest lesson this year was learning patience. I've been trying to hit a sub 3:25 marathon since my November 2024 marathon but despite 2 great training cycles I had 2 flops on the marathon day (most recent being May 2025). After the flop in May, I could have turned around and trained for a fall full but finally was able to convince myself that I'll get there eventually and take a season off from training for fulls. Hoping my biggest 2026 accomplishment will be a sub 3:25 in February!!

ATTQOTD:

This has been an interesting year. Please feel free to skip this long story to the end, it’s all about all my efforts to pick up running.

In 2005, approaching 40, I started on my first fitness journey. I lost 50 pounds and quit smoking. I tried running and got all the way up to running 3 miles straight thru, but it was always a horrible slog and I’d quit after three or four months. I mostly kept to the elliptical or bike. But I found joy in my life and met my husband that year (though we did not start dating until later).

In 2009, I left NYC and moved to PA to move in with my husband. Between a horrific commute, demanding job and his three boys, my fitness journey took a back seat.

In 2015, as I was approaching 50, I looked around and realized that I had put on 30 of the 50 pounds lost and was feeling pretty crappy about myself. I started my second fitness journey and lost that extra 30 pounds. I tried running various times during this second journey but again, I’d get up to 3 miles straight thru but it was awful and I’d just give up, sticking with elliptical, bike and hiking.

Then in 2023, I guess you could say I started my third fitness journey. My husband said “you know they do races at Disney”. We started running in August of 2023 to train for the 5k and 10K at the 2024 Springtime Surprise. But it sold out too fast and we had to sign up for the challenge. We told each other, “We’re never going to be able to run 10 miles, but we can see how far we’ll go.” Those first couple of months of running were rough. I think it took me two months just to get to running a mile straight thru. Then I discovered the runDisney group and heard about run/walk intervals. Goodness, what a difference that made. I thought I had to run straight thru to be a real runner and could never break that 3-mile mark.

Thanks to this group, I started run/walk intervals and the mileage started to pile up. To my enormous surprise, my husband and I both finished the 10-mile run. I swear, it was one of the most amazing feelings ever to actually complete the challenge and that race. Then I was hooked on runDisney.

We signed up for the Wine & Dine and it was my first half marathon. But the run/walk intervals got me through it. But it was not easy and took well over 3 hours. In 2024, I finished it with just over 350 running miles.

Then I discovered the training logs and Billy’s training plans. Goodness, even with my run/walk intervals, I had been going all out on every run. I did not realize I was supposed to run slow to run fast. I started slowing down in my runs and boy, what a difference that made!

Then came Marathon Weekend at the beginning of 2025. We originally wanted to just do everything except the marathon but got shut out of almost everything. After much discussion and stalking Telegram, we decided to just sign up for the Dopey because it was the easiest way to get the three races we wanted. We’d laugh and talk about how we were too old and too slow to ever try a marathon. Because, holy heck, it is a lot of work which we agreed we would never try to put ourselves through. But I did want to run through the castle so I told Rick: “we’ll just start the marathon and let ourselves get swept after that.” Well, we knew what happened with that (tripped over a cone at 19 miles and broke my arm).

If you go this far, I warned you that it was a long story!

When I started 2025, I had the following goals: run 500 miles, have a half marathon of less than 3 hours and run a 10k straight thru.

Accomplishments:

When I set my goal of 500 miles for 2025, I thought it was a reasonable goal (150 miles more than 2024) and thought I’d work my way up to 750 for 2026. Then I hit 500 miles way earlier than I expected so I upped my goal to 750. Well, I blew past that one too. I ended the year with 834 miles (assuming I don’t run tomorrow).

During the PW weekend, after following a plan from Billy, and slowing down during training, I PR’d all three races. Billy told me that my “best case scenario” for a half marathon was 2:42. But that goal was under ideal conditions and completely unrealistic after two days of races before it. Not only did I beat the 3-hour mark for the half marathon but I did it a whole minute per mile faster than my goal. I finished it in 2:46.

Lesson learned:

I do not care about running straight thru anymore. I can and have run 6 miles straight through during training but I don’t enjoy it. I’d way prefer to do a training run of 12 miles, doing my 90/30 intervals, roughly 13:30 per mile pace, and feel amazing at the end.

ATTQOTD:

Biggest accomplishment: Having the courage to finally join my area's largest running club. It's not always easy making new friends at age 50, but I kept showing up and after a few weeks I found my tribe.

Lesson learned: Sometimes you have to get out of your comfort zone for personal growth.

ATTQOTD: I am most proud of my commitment level this year. I decided to do a marathon outside of Disney, a decision I didn’t take lightly because it’s a while different beast. That commitment and dedication earned me a PR in the mile, 5k, 10k and 10 mile along with my first (and probably only) age group award. I also ran 1500 miles this year, a first for me.

Lesson learned was to really listen to my body in the heat, during marathon trading this summer, I tried to gut it out a few times when I really shouldn’t have and I paid the price dearly.

ATTQOTD-
Accomplishment- I most proud of taking back control over my weight by starting weight loss meds. I had tried everything under the sun for the past five years and finally decided it was time. I feel so much better.

Lesson learned- I need more electrolytes. I decided during the half in January to take some at every stop instead of every other and it made a huge difference.

Happy birthday @The Expert ! Hope you have a great day!
