The Running Thread --2025

For yucks, I went to one of the tour companies supposedly handling US participants…..I was put in a queue just to get into the web site…..so very Disney. They had packages left—pretty spendy, but there were like 3 hotels. Marathon tours was sold out. Seems like it’s a $4-5k outlay minimum. And more if you’re a single runner.
There is a company based in the UK that was doing packages for the WDW marathon. The entry fee is £200 and you have to pair it with a minimum 4 night stay at a Disney property with the cheapest being POR. Cost for 4 nights for 2 guests was £1950 !!.

Any fleeting thoughts I had about trying to convince DW to take a short trip were quickly dismissed ☹️

In my mind, the travel packages are like the Disney dining plan... It isn't a deal, but a convenience. Sure, on your own budget you might choose a different hotel, or may not pay for some of the tours, but you're getting access to the race itself and often extras like chartered transportation to and from the expo and the race, pre and post race meals and group shakeouts, etc. You might find yourself clearing out the gift shop of rice krispy bars as you wait for your Uber to the airport, but you mostly got your money's worth.

Well the heat dome hit us today. It was 80 degrees when I ran at 6:00 this morning 🥵 I went for 8 instead of 12 but with slowing it down, it went ok! Rinse and repeat tomorrow.

It’s warmer here outside the Twin Cities than it is at WDW 😂
It's freaking miserable outside! Major props for running outside in this nonsense.

Now imagine it’s like that EVERY DAY… UNENDING HEAT… FOR SIX STRAIGHT MONTHS!!! And that’s central Florida. :rotfl: :headache: It stormed a bit after my morning run today and when I went out afterward, I got a little chill because the rain cooled it down so much. It was 85°. :rotfl2:

In all seriousness though, be careful with the heat up there!

Yes, that's hotter than here in Central Texas at the moment. I ran 6 miles this morning just after the 6:30 sunrise, and it was 76º with 85% RH (for a T+D of 148). Not terrible for this time of year here.

I ended up running laps around my street and the main street in my neighborhood because my street has shade in the morning. Thankfully I was outside running at 6:30 and I only saw one neighbor. I did 3 miles and called it a day. 10k training starts July 1 and I feel ready to go.

It's 8:42 pm and we're sitting at a T+D of 164 (89+75). At least we're only stuck with it for 2 days before the rain returns.

Does anyone have experience/ advice on how to speed up recovery of a sprain? I sprained my foot in October, thought it healed, went to foot specialist and got treated, did princess and was told it was healing fine, but I went back and they told me it can take a year or more to heal. I haven’t done any running since the princess 5k, and that was just a very slow walk. I skipped the half to protect my foot. I’m already signed up for the summer virtuals, and wine and dine 5k. Doc said my options are: do absolutely no major activity till at least October, and hope it goes away, or surgery. Even if I choose the rest option, if it doesn’t work I would need the surgery. The surgery would have me off my feet for 3 months, then I could get back into it, but I’ve seen things online about people having to relearn how to walk, and taking a long while to get back into things. I believe it’s called a lis franc sprain.
Sorry for the block of text!

Have you been to a physical therapist? If not, that would probably be where I would start. A good physical therapist - particularly one that is a runner and/or deals with runners on a regular basis - is worth their weight in gold.

Next question - Are you allowed to walk? If not, can you bike or do you have access to a pool for aqua jogging? If you are worried about the W&D 5K, any other these activities are awesome alternatives to prepare you for it. My physical therapist's office also has a machine called an AlterG, which is a treadmill that allows you to run without the stress on your body. Finding one might be challenging (and sessions tend to be pricey), but that is also a possibility.

But getting a second opinion from a PT may give you more concrete information about the injury and what is possible.

+1 for seeking a 2nd opinion if you haven’t yet, and for trying PT.

I had a severe ankle sprain with partially torn peroneal tendon as a teen, when I was training as a ballerina at a time when long-term health was not considered a priority: I was non-weight bearing for 3 weeks, no PT, just went right back to daily class and rehearsals and suffered through it with copious amounts of Ben-Gay under Saran Wrap and an elastic brace, until the damage and pain was too much and my career ended before it really ever took off.

Don’t do that.

I now live with a nice chunk of scar tissue in there and it can be quite painful at times. I’ve seen a few sports med docs over the years and the key to living with it now is keeping things as limber and strong as possible in my ankle structure - some amount of ankle-specific stretching and strengthening exercise is a daily thing.

Hang in there: I know the itch to return to exercise is strong, but trust me: you don’t want to live out your days in pain and with limitations if you can avoid that!

Sadly it did not stick if it did snow last night. It was about 35* on my run today, though and I did my yearly Olympic Park loop

Thank you! I went to pt in February, all the way up until princess, then doc said it was no longer needed. I might go back tho, it seemed to help. The only problem was the different pt people I saw all had different ideas of how soon I could run. One said not till summer, and the others thought I could do a half after 2 appointments. But of course that was four months ago. I can walk, just not long distances/more than needed as far as I know. But those other exercises sound good! I think I might go back to my original pt people, or find a new one. Thank you for taking the time to respond and give advice!! 💜

Oh dang that sounds horrible! That kinda sounds like what I did originally. I went to the urgent care and they told me it was a sprain, to rest for a couple weeks and then I’d be fine. Ended up in a boot 3 months later. Thank you for responding and giving good advice!💜

then doc said it was no longer needed.

Which doctor? Honestly, I've had varying degrees of luck with doctors. It seems like some of them don't see the value in PT, but I swear by it. I worked for years with a personal trainer while he was going to school to be a PT and then I worked with a different PT who correctly diagnosed an issue that I'd been struggling with for years in less than 10 minutes. IMHO Doctors seemed to be good at telling you what's wrong, but PTs are the "boots on the ground" on managing the actual recovery process.

The only problem was the different pt people I saw all had different ideas of how soon I could run. One said not till summer, and the others thought I could do a half after 2 appointments.

With my PT, it's never "when can I run again?" but very much "this is the next step" and then gradually working through the process. As frustrating as it is, it is almost impossible to know how an individual's body is going to react as you start to reload and rebuild from an injury. I was going to PT for almost 18 months for plantar fasciitis and, when I look back at the journal I kept at the time, I can't believe the ups and downs that I went through. Progress was definitely NOT linear. However, my PT was with me all of the way, giving me exactly what I was allowed to do - and when - in between sessions. And I followed that plan to the letter (well, most of the time :rotfl:)

I can walk, just not long distances/more than needed as far as I know.

What does your doctor say?

I think I might go back to my original pt people, or find a new one.

I can't stress enough how important it is to find a PT that gets what you are trying to do. I was blessed to find a local PT that is a runner and built his practice around runners. A lot of PTs are used to dealing with older individuals and aren't experienced with/don't understand athletes. So I would definitely recommend talking to a few until you find one that you click with. Through all of ups and downs of my recovery, I built a solid foundation of trust with my PT (and the PTA that I worked most directly with) and I can't express how valuable that was. They knew me and understood my way of expressing what I was feeling and I was ready to listen to what they had to say, even when I didn't like what they were saying.

I opened the thread and saw someone talking of snow. Oh that sounds so nice right now. This weekend has been brutal down in the Houston area. You just never get used to it. Yesterday was particularly brutal, I stepped out the door at 8am to get in a run and didn't know if I should be breathing the air or trying to drink it. I think at 8am it was 84 degree, feels like 93, with 90% humidity. It was one of those weekends that towards the end of the run, your shoes feel like you just submerged them in water and you are leaving shoe prints on the sidewalk. 😵

Northern Michigan checking in to say that it was 80 at 8am here. But our humidity is "only" at 70%.

I'm not sad that it's supposed to drop back down the the usual low in the low 60s/high in the mid 70s tomorrow.
