The Running Thread --2025

ATTQOTD: I haven't taken any trips since I started running that weren't runDisney trips so...yes?
Same! I normally travel for races and if I want to explore the city outside of the race, I’ll register for something like a food tour. I’ll do that after the race so I don’t have to be careful about what I eat since I’ve already run.

Welcome to Lincoln! If your looking for a group run there is one out on by a running store (Fleet feet) at 6:30 tonight in the telegraph district (21st and capital parkway so close to downtown if that's where you are staying). I have never been so no idea what it's like. I know they have signs marking the route. Fleet feet puts on things most days of the week I believe but mostly on the east end of town.

I hope your enjoying your stay!
Enjoying our stay very much!

We’re on the SE side of town. I am usually a morning runner and already ran this am but will definitely check out what Fleet Feet has in the future!

ATTQOTD: We did a big trip in October 2023 (Panama Canal cruise), and I had big intentions of running on the ship, but running outside proved impossible (way too hot and the front of the ship was blocked off, so I couldn't go all the way around), and I only went to the gym a few times, and running on the treadmill while facing the ocean made me sick. :P

Otherwise, we take summer trips to visit my in-laws and I ran a few times on my last trip around their neighborhood and campsite. My FIL advised me on a "flat" route and I came back to their house and said "excuse me, but ***?" :D Their campsite is SUPER hilly but I enjoyed it for the challenge.

ATQOD: Running on vacation is my favorite because it’s like sight seeing on fast forward. I will use the treadmill depending on scheduling constraints, such as if I’m at a conference and I want to make sure I’m done at a certain time, and that’s usually the only time I get to run on a treadmill. But most of the time I use running as an excuse to explore a new city or area I’m staying at. Some of my favorite vacation memories are the early morning runs, such as along the trails of Yellowstone where geysers were erupting and bison were everywhere.

ATTQOTD:

I definitely trend towards the treadmill, unless we are camping somewhere and you're talking about trail running. I'm totally a "country mouse" and would never go running in an unfamiliar city on my own without having first thoroughly vetted routes with people I know who have run there. But we also don't travel much. Spring break trips are usually breaks from running, or I'm squeezing in a few miles on a treadmill.

QOTD: Do you like running outside in new cities/towns when you travel? Do you stick with the treadmill? Any surprises when you have explored new places running?

DH travels a lot for work and I sometimes go with him. We’re in Lincoln, NE right now and holy cow the hills here, I had no idea! They have an amazing trail system that I have been using as well as lots of connected neighborhoods so there are plenty of places to run and it’s very pretty with the hills and mature trees. So mad respect if there are a Lincoln runners here, your legs must be solid!
I love running outside in new places! Surprises…my sunrise run in old San Juan last year was awesome because I got to see the Magic coming in to harbor the day we were to board it. Back in 2019 we went to Moab for my birthday and I went to Devil’s Garden that day to run a 10 miler and it snowed and I got a little lost and ended up on a little cliff face, so that was “neat.” Those that know me on Strava that where my avatar came from

I think I would enjoy running in new places when I travel but I'm very good at getting lost so I don't really feel comfortable doing it. I usually just skip runs when I travel, unless it's a long trip (like over a week) in which case I either treadmill or figure something out.

This is actually a great question for today because I have my company retreat coming up in a few weeks and signups for morning activities opened today, and I'm trying to decide whether to skip the activities one morning and do a run around the property (it's at a golf resort so probably not as exciting as exploring a new city but might be nice). We're actually doing group runs one day but I don't like group runs (and don't necessarily want to run with my coworkers) so I'm doing yoga that morning.

ATTQOTD: Yes, I like to try to get in a run outside in the area I'm in when I travel. This "when I travel" is mostly for work or family trips that are not vacation. Most of the "vacations" that DH and I do are hiking trips, so we're doing that and I usually don't run because that keeps us busy. Anyway, it's a nice way to see some of the area, as others have said.

running on the treadmill while facing the ocean made me sick. :P
Oh, my! Never thought about that! That would probably happen to me, too, since I get motion sick pretty easily.

ATTQOTD: Usually. I used to travel a lot for my job (at least it was a lot to me) and I would be on the west coast. In my role I would visit hospital clinicians on the west coast so my days would usually end early or sometimes start in the really late afternoon. Either way it was rare for me to out past 4. Coming from Chicago and 2 hours ahead I was always up at the crack of dawn too. I didn’t have an Apple Watch at the time so when I went running I usually looked for a path or park and winged it. Luckily I was almost always in nice areas and I found it a great way to explore the cities, such as Portland, San Diego, Tempe, Dana Point. And even get bored 🥱 too seeing the outskirts of Scottsdale, Reno, and Clackamas.

I even brought my running gear with us Disney when we were there in January, as I was training for the Springtime Surprise 10k. Silly of me though, Never unpacked it because I was too tired from all the walking we did.

ATTQOTD: Yes I love to run whenever I go somewhere new it’s a great way to get a feel for the place. I enjoy running on cruise ships also and running by water be it the ocean or river is the best.
