The Running Thread --2025

ATTQOTD: Monday thru Thursday (and Sunday), runs are pretty much alone. I'm in a running club and we do our longs runs on Saturdays, so my Saturday runs are always with a group. Benefits to both alone and group runs but doing a long run with a group seems to go by much quicker just BSing most of the way.

ATTQOTD: Alone, except for the longer rD races where I'm always hoping to find other Team Not-So-Fast members to hang with. I tried a few groups when I lived in Salt Lake, but I was always slowest and they didn't do intervals. Since getting my treadmill, I do 90% of my running on it plus I work from home and am often fitting in runs where I can.

I wonder if this is going to be more of the collection they put out later in the expo? Or more of the blue and green collection? Might be a good place to look if anyone missed out on the medal rack.

I'm going to see if my mom can pop in next week and look for the medal hanger for me.

I'm gonna try to be active here again lol. Starting off with lots of answers to QOTDs.

QOTD: Post a picture that provides a running/walking highlight of 2024. It can be a race, a place, a face (Okay this rhyming has got to stop). You don't have to be in the picture if you would prefer to remain reasonably anonymous. Animal shots are always welcome.:-)

Crossing the finish line of the Boston Marathon is up there for sure.

Do you take a break from running following a race/race weekend? If so, how long? Do you also take a break from other workouts?
Sometimes. If it was a marathon then I'll take at least two weeks off. Usually no breaks after shorter distances. Maybe a week or two off following a high effort half.

QOTD: For those who have a running watch that makes a running suggestion for that days run or rest, do you listen to it?
Ha. Nope. My Garmin does make suggestions but I ignore them. I have a human coach for that.

QOTD: Do you rather run alone or with one or more person... or with your pet?
Always with people! Whether it's my running club or the friends of mine who are frequent characters in my running journal. 99.9% of the time it's my club. I need the conversation and encouragement and accountability.

ATTQOTD: I run alone. It is too tough to find someone who wants to run the same schedule (time of day, length and pace) as me. It has been nice when I have run with others, though. I also see a lot of the same people while I'm out running each day, so I kind of feel like I have people with me.

ATTQOTD: Another lone runner here. I used to run with my dog for easy runs but she's 13 now and doesn't make it very far anymore. She was the very best running partner. Below is a photo of us after a snowy run several years ago.

Unfortunately my younger dog is predisposed for bad hips and has arthritis so the vet advised me not to run with her either.

Like some others here, I've tried joining local group runs. Also like others, they're too fast for me and I always end up running alone so I've stopped adjusting my schedule for them. Overall I don't mind running alone and enjoy the time to myself but every once in awhile I think it'd be nice to have some company.

Lots of answers to various QOTD....

I have a Garmin a Venu 3S so it doesn't have the suggested daily run. I really wish Garmin wouldn't gatekeep features like that. I wanted a watch that looked more dainty for daily wear, but that doesn't mean I don't care about being my best runner.

Last year after the Disneyland Half Marathon, week 1 post race was yoga only, week 2 I added back strength training, week 3 I returned easy runs.
Now that I just completed WDW Marathon I'm honestly being less rigid about what/ when to add things back to my routine. I chaperone weekly Ski Club for kids so this week I skied the bunny hill 3 days post marathon. Next week I'll get back to the chair lift and regular mountain. I have already re-started strength training too, but I find it takes a lot out of me. Tomorrow I'll be at the track, likely just for walking but I could do some easy RWR if I feel like it.

I run alone which is easier for the most part, for scheduling. I usually listen to audiobook when I run so i don't get bored. My husband also trained for the marathon: In 4 months he agreed to run with me three times. We were on different training plans, and in training, he's faster than me. I would have appreciated a few more joint runs, but he wanted to do his own thing.

ATTQOTD: I like to run with 20k to 50k people 🙃

Joking aside, extrovert me generally likes to run with a buddy or a small group. However, I am also content being in a more meditative mood with myself when running.

There were really different phases in my running journey:
- Running with colleagues on the mountain or to the old port during lunchtime pre-pandemic, I enjoyed that camaraderie, exchanging tips and encouragements.
- Training DD when her biggest objectives were to be able to catch the 30 minutes bunny pacer on a 5k. Those were moments between the two of us. I learnt to be a supporter from the bench for her competition since 2021.
- Preparing for my half-marathons, marathons and Dopey alone, talking to folks on the DISboards or solving world problems in my head. Also exploring places by myself.
- Getting used to running with DH and slowly finding our space, paces and fun together.
- For the last two years, we run together at least 95% of the times and mostly train for the same races. Although I run the shorter races alone sometimes for speed and the longer ones together for pleasure.

ATTQOTD mostly alone, but the first mile of each run is usually with my dog, then I drop her at back at home and finish however many miles I want that day. Racing I prefer to run with pacers (rwr) or leap frog them to know my intervals are keeping pace.

ATTQOTD:
I prefer to do my training runs alone, as others have said it is “my time” and I treasure it. I have run with my dog, but he is not good at the idea of pace…. It is full speed ahead and then abruptly stop and go left! But he is great for laying down in the grass at the park.IMG_0446.jpeg

ATTQOTD: 99% alone - that’s my me-time.

ATTQOTD: 99% alone - that’s my me-time.

Attqotd: alone. Always alone. That’s me time for my introverted self.
ATTQOTD: As the above folks said, it's time for me and time for things to be quiet. This is probably 40% of why I run alone.
ATTQOTD: I run alone. It is too tough to find someone who wants to run the same schedule (time of day, length and pace) as me.
And this is the other 60%...I'm highly organized and scheduled, so I want to run exactly when I want to run, and I can probably give you a list of reasons why that time is best for me that day. :) And that doesn't really work with others very well.

But conversely, I enjoy running the first parts of long races with another person or a group - I will often try to chat someone up, which is weird for an introvert. It just helps the beginning of the race go more easily and sometimes I'll find someone experienced in the race who can give me tips.

ATTQOTD: I think I prefer running alone, but only slightly. I like zoning out and letting my mind wander. But I do run at lunch time at least once a week with coworkers and enjoy the social aspect. I like doing speedwork with others but preferably in the context of being at the track together but not necessarily running the intervals together. I want to do my own thing but have someone there to commiserate with haha.

Back from my planned short workout. 4⁰F feels like -8⁰F. I was fine, but my exhaled breath froze on the outside of my wool buff and my glasses.

It is 8 here and feels like -4. We got another couple inches of snow yesterday after DH and I cleared all the decks and walkways from what fell while we were in Florida, so I went out and cleared them again. Thankfully it was very light and I could do most of the work with a broom, but it still took me an hour. I guess that's my pre-workout today before strength training this afternoon!
