Hartwell Dam Run 5K, 05/07/22, Time: 26:59 (Goal 27:00), Pace: 8:41, Overall 45/510, AG 3/?

Dam good run, considering my dam poor training due to dam nagging injuries. (You get to say 'dam' as much as you want on the day of the dam race.)

Dam nice bling: coffee mug plus a ribbon.

Got to see @Disney at Heart and got a special shout-out from Mr. Disney at Heart (race director).

The 2021 Ironman World Championship is taking place now in Utah (yes there are at least 2 things weird about that sentence)
I’m watching now on YouTube. How do I read the info on the screen? Specifically the miles next to the flag— is that how far they have left?

They were showing what I will call "Race total miles", i.e. swim+bike+run and were counting down to finish. Then they were also showing next to that the miles remaining in that discipline, i.e. swim or bike or run.

Got it! This darn event is making me contemplate registering for Augusta 70.3… lol.

Great Dam Run. Beautiful dam scenery, beautiful dam day. 1:08:02-03? dam pace in the 10K and 2nd in old lady age group. I’ll blame this year’s slower pace on the dam headwind blowing on the dam today. (Thus the jacket in the after picture.) Most of all, great getting to catch up with a dam good running friend!

Race Report - Indy Mini-Marathon, Indianapolis

This half marathon has been on my bucket list for several years and was now back live. Participation was lower than pre pandemic, but still just shy of 14,000 finishers.

The expo and packet pickup were held in the Convention Center a couple of blocks from the race start. It was well organized with the usual suspects you see at a Disney expo plus some non-running exhibits (such as a UPS hiring booth). The volunteers and exhibitors were in their full MIdwest Nice mode; I must have been told 6-8 times how happy they were to see me and to wish me a good race.

There were 26 corrals arranged into 5 waves. You were assigned a corral based upon your estimated finish time when you registered. If I remember correctly, only the elite corrals had POT requirements. I stayed at the Westin which was literally right out the door from the corrals. My wave started at 8:00 and I left the hotel lobby at about 7:30. The corrals were not policed, but a casual scan of bibs in my M corral showed nobody with a higher corral sneaking in. All very different from a typical Disney race.

The race, of course, is all Indy 500 themed, starting with a Indy 500 car in the hotel lobby. The race start tower was a replica of the Indy 500 start with green flags being waved. An Indy 500 pace car started the race. The water and Gatoraid stops were listed as pit stops. The highlight of the race was obvious; running a lap around the 2.5 mile track, stopping to Kiss the Bricks at the track start/finish line. There was good, but not great crowd support along the way. There were local bands almost every mile including one group of senior citizen cloggers (sort of wooden shoe tap dancers).

Another cool part of the race was the Gold Mile. Along the back stretch of the track was a mile of American flags with posters honoring hundreds of Indiana military service people and police officers killed in the line of duty.

My goal was the same as my Run the Bluegrass race five weeks ago; a nice steady 12:00 a mile pace. I finished in 2:36 and change for a 11:58 pace. Indianapolis is about a 4-hour drive from my home in suburban Chicago, and I definitely will run this race again.

First run in two weeks for me today after rolling my foot. It's still not totally healed, but I think at this point whatever it strain/soft tissue/whatever injury it is can be managed. It was no worse running than walking. I kept it to one mile, and will just play it by ear.

Meantime, in those two weeks, winter left and summer arrived. 73 for my run today and supposed to be 80 the next few days. We seem to have skipped right over spring this year, as have many others.

You mention sunscreen. I ordered some small foil packets off Amazon that I could tuck into my running belt. $6 for 25 packets. With my fair skin, I normally go for SPF 80, SPF100, lead shielding, etc., but SPF 30 was the highest I could find. That said, with the lower winter sun and the sun being a factor for only a few hours, 1 packet was enough for my face and arms. I waited until sometime around 10 in the morning and put it on during one of the long boring stretches. In spite of being only SPF 30, it seemed to do the trick since I wasn't relying on it for peak sun hours.
Have been keeping that nugget of wisdom around since this post and finally got to use them on a family trip to Denver last week. They were great! Especially for reapplication when we had to sit outside at lunch with no blockage from the sun. So thank you! Will definitely be bringing them on long runs during summer training.

The one caveat: I found one of them with the single-use condiments on the kitchen counter--apparently my mom thought they were mayo packets...😆

For The Woodlands / Houston area peeps on here, good grief it has been brutal the past week for running. During the week I run during my lunch break and this near 90 degrees with 60% humidity has been rough. I went out this past Saturday and Sunday morning around 7:30am and it was already near 80 degrees. Geesh. Looks like there is no relief in the near future either. Making sure there are plenty of water fountains on my routes.

My run last night was a T+D of 160 (Temp of 86F and Dew of 74F) here in WI. In 2020, I only exceeded a T+D of 160 three times (7/8/20, 7/18/20, and 8/8/20). So to have it happen on 5/10/22 is unusual. OOF! My T+D record is 177 (Temp of 95F, Dew of 82F, and Feels like 119F) on 6/29/18. I don't want another summer like 2018...

Just curious, do you usually track that data with each run?

Yes. My Garmin data uploads to Strava and I use the Klimat.app (link) to auto download the weather data into the Strava's run description in my preferred format.

I only pay $5 per year for Klimat and it's well worth the cost to me versus gathering the information on a daily basis myself. Then on a weekly basis I input the runs into my master Excel file for that particular training plan like below.

This allows me to track my HR versus T+D adjusted Pace over time. There are some caveats with how I will splice certain runs, and whether I'll use the data at all (like intervals less than about 2 miles aren't usually useful for this kind of analysis). Overall it's a way to make a summer month's performance comparable to a winter month's performance. Also lets me know how I'm doing vs several years of data in terms of my current fitness level. Something like this:

Screen Shot 2022-05-11 at 1.39.40 PM.png

Where it clearly shows that I was in peak physical shape in December 2017, coinciding with my peak race performance at Dopey 2018 (those remain my 5k PR, 10k PR, 2nd best HM, and 3rd best M). Or comparing gains within a training plan like this:

Screen Shot 2022-05-11 at 1.45.01 PM.png

Which showed me over the course of the Spring 2017 Daniels 5k/10k training plan how the relationship between my HR and pace improved. What's cool to see in the above is that at 80% HRR I went from 9:21 min/mile pace in Spring 2015 to 6:43 min/mile pace in late April 2017 (so equal effort is now 2:40 min/mile faster). Or conversely, my HR at a 9:21 min/mile went from 80% HRR to 55% HRR in about two years time (so same pace takes far far less effort).

For real!! A friend recommended freezing some water in my hydration pack. I started doing that and it is really nice! Having cold water and basically an ice vest to run in for several miles helps soooo much! And sprinklers. I usually run in the morning so I hit all the sprinklers I can. Or I wait until sunset for minimum humidity and no sun. You are braver than I for running at lunch.

When finishing up a run over the weekend, a neighbor had just turned his sprinklers on. He told me to feel free to run through them. LOL.

Well, for only the second time in my running life I tripped and fell Tonight. I landed on a sweet gum ball, rolled my ankle and my body followed. No blood, minimal scraping and I think my ankle and knee will feel ok after a rest day tomorrow. I was able to run the quarter mile or so home so i doubt I did any real damage. Pretty sure a couple cars driving by saw me go down because they slowed down as they passed me but when I sat up I guess they figured I would live So they didn’t stop.

Has anyone used a massage gun like theragun? I'm pretty old school with a foam roller, but I've heard some people swear by them. Just seems like it would be hard get to your hamstrings etc.

I love mine... I never have hamstring issues though. I use it on my calves & glutes mostly.
